Ok as promised my very first effort with acrylics .

These really are cheap,os Rowney student paints , tiny little tubes cost me around £3 for 12 tubes , but its good enough to experiment with .

But firstly I have to thank EG for inspiring me to have a go with em ,, I have to say its been a bit of a steep learning curve as the bloody stuff dries out so quickly and the way I fiddle and fart around in my old age lol , but I have to say I love it , I love the bright colours also the quickness in which you can go over and repair etc .

Now what I have done here ,, many years ago an art shop in the local vicinity closed down and flogged of his frames cheap , this one cost me around 80p so what I did was cut up an old piece of hardboard to fit in the frame then I put a strip of masking tape across where I wanted the horizon line and just slapped it straight on ! paint straight from the tubes quickly mixed and away I went .

Took me one and a half hours from start to finish , TBH next time I will prime the board with gesso first to make a base to paint on .

Thanks again EG , I'm gonna get myself some proper acrylics to paint with now , I really enjoy the freedom these paints allow you .

Not thicker Willy ,, just scraped it on with me pallate knife and pushed it around with a real crappy 15bht Thai brush , then I washed it quick before the bristles stuck together .

That green is a joke ,, I made it from some weird colour called light green + bright yellow ( EG might be well able to enlarge on these colours all new to me ) + I added some black to calm it all down a bit ,, when I get some proper acrylics , ie some colours I can relate to I will look forward to getting stuck into this new game

Well done Nige...... really outstanding since its your first go.. The drying time can be both an advantage and disadvantage especially for neophytes like myself.

On a raw wood surface the resins will most likely ruin it in a short period of time. But wood can be a very very cheap ground to work on. Get some acrylic spray paint and give it a couple of coats to seal and your off and running. Lots of folks use a birch or hardwood plywood thin as you can get and prime it.

As for paints I would bring them along once you decide on the manufacturer. W&N your probably familiar with at least their nomenclature or Golden. I use W&N so can vouch for quality of their artist line. Lots of others use golden with good results that I know of but not used them myself.

Get some retarder medium in the jell form... You can always water it down to get the consistency you prefer if its too thick for you.

Not sure about Golden but know Bromley carries a full line of W&N.

Glad you ventured into the medium and are enjoying it.

Some of the names that companies come up with are way way off LOL...... It appears they try and market the stuff with cute identities rather than the generic 'normal' names that are associated with the pigments. Also a good way to disguise replacement chemical compound for a known pigment used by most.

I know I don't need to tell you anything about mixing, however Will Kemp has some great vids on mixing acrylics... could be you might pick something up...

Thanks EG for all the above info and help ,, I just looked and one of the online suppiers I use ( think its Ken Bromley ) is offering an extra 30% off Windsor + Newton acrylics + a free 200ml tube of white when you order 6 or more , the offer ends today , so I'm gonna have to get my arse into gear .

I'll probably order my old favourites

    Burnt Sienna

    French Ultra

    Cobalt Blue

    Cad yellow light

    Raw Umber

    Cad red

    Yellow ochre

+ one of the wild acrylics just for the hell of it mabe an orange of some description .

Thanks again for all the tips and inspiration , I will give it another bash today in a different form

Here's another one off the new acrylic line , what I have done here is to use an old photo frame , take the glass out , then I glued a piece of primed linen onto the backing hardboard and painted on that .

    [/IMG]

Now TBH ,, I know your gonna find this hard to believe in the UK approaching October , but its actually bloody hot here ! well it is in my conservatory ,, I know its nothing like the heat you lads paint in ,, but it sure gives me a hell of an appreciation of the work you achieve in the heat .

Acrylics ,,,,,,,, fast ,,,,,, and then fast again lol ,, BTW I have placed my order so looking forward to our upcoming trip , and having a go with em in the inferno

This was done quite a few years ago. Oil on canvas. I am a bit out of practice these days.

The curve on the lower right is actually the glass frame which got broken in a house move.

I have really been getting into Revolver, Magical Mystery Tour and Abbey Road again recently.
