Just noted this: actually you are wrong about masking tape etc. Many many great artist use masking tape and or rulers or straight edges to get the horizon in place. The horizon in a photo, painting etc is a very specific point in composition. It is not necessarily the top of your 'viewed' horizon which may include buildings, mountains or anything physical but rather the farthest point found by the viewer at his/her EYE LEVEL.

The horizon is probably one of the key elements in the foundation of composition. If it is slightly sewed in either direction it causes confusion to the viewer. The human eye/brain combo is super accurate in determining the horizon.(that along with the inner ear allow is to walk upright regardless of the terrain). Anyway I digress.

Masking tape is a known 'tool' of many of the world's best artist, not only for horizons but also to insure a straight and 'hard' edge when it is necessary for the composition.

In the photo we are using for our little exercise for example, the pier can be either wonky or straight lines as long as the horizon is straight to give us a reference point in viewing the piece as a whole. If the horizon is incorrect no matter how the pier is depicted the whole will seem "off".

Masking tape is also used as you would use graphic gum or other plasticized
products for reserving white space in water colors and acrylics using the water color application method.

Straight 'hard' edge lines are critical to some compositions, sail masts and rigging being one, buildings another if the edge is needed. Sail rigging was/is often done with a mall stick rather than tape though.

    ^ Humbug.

I didn't cheat and use masking tape for my horizon. If you lot can live with yourselves then that's up to you.

When are we posting these pics, anyway?

    Looks great.

I'm still trying to get my paint consistency right. It's usually too watery or too thick so I end up destroying my paper.

Well done lads ,, but I,m not quite sure what SL has done here ,

SL is that a painting ? or is it one of your digital watercolour filtered pics ?

Whatever it looks great , but I have my suspicions

Sorry if I,m calling it wrongly , but why would you have all those strange unrelated colours out the tubes on the board ? and no sign of any colours mixed + a jug of clean water ?

C.mon SL tell us your secret

    BTW green sent

Marmite , that is an excellent rendition ! bloody well done !

You have managed to capture the light on the jetty + the ladies dress brilliantly .

However you dont need me to tell you about your classic watercolour runback mistakes that you have ,, all you need is a little help with it , I can get you round that problem no worries , mabe one day when I,m over I,ll show you a bit of a demo how to get it down without the runbacks .

Mind you I need a few runs at it in that bloody heat myself to get used to drying times !

All in all a sterling effort , I am impressed , shame you dont paint more ,, BTW can you paint the figures on mine for me ?

I must admit to thinking the same as I recognise the filter that makes the paper look like it has a cotton weave (Water Paper filter?)

    Still looks good though.
