Maybe the water should have more sky colour in it ; perhaps it needs to be less placid and much faster moving too , but as Hokusai's daughter put it, in the wonderfully whacky Japanese film : ''If paintings are too logical they are boring ''

Edo Porn / Hokusai manga (1981)

Worth a look if you like movies about artists , there are not so many .
First half is good anyway .

Right , I'm off out for a strawberry Cornetto ice cream

    Wow, very nice!

To get from the original purple splotch to that is excellent.

Looks great Nigel, one thing I would mention is normally clouds and mist gathers more in the valleys and above rivers, so I would have filled more there, rather than more on the left side of the mountain.

But your picture looks great anyway.

I've also found a bunch more pics that I painted a couple of decades ago, so come Monday morning I'll post a couple more up.

Thanks lads for all your comments ,, its great to see people taking an interest and coming up with different ideas.

TBH Bluey + EG are both correct ,, yes in a contemporary painting the sea would mirror the sky,, but this was more an excersise of trying what I could do with this new medium and also what was coming out of my head at the time .

Now before I got to that stage I had just done that mirrored it BUT ,, I wanted to just give it a little bit of a punch , which in the real it looks quite nice .

If any of you would like me to go back and mirror it back to the sky colour I will happily do exactly that and post up the result

Oh sorry EG ,yes I used my knife ,, I will come back a little bit later with some info about the knife I use ,, its not very conventional
I'm proud of my 38" waist , also proud I have never done drugs

Your views on the overall experience ???? How did the drying time compare to regular oils? At the semi dry stage did you try and go in with a wet/damp brush and see how much you could rework?

It is interesting so see if maybe these binders and give you a time-to-work somewhere between acrylics and oil.

As for the "knife" LoL, I've used anything from a broken piece of credit card to a ruler edge and of course a regular painting knife. To me anything with a sharpish, straight edge is a knife

Drying times are very quick , so I would recomend only putting what you need on the pallet to save waste ,, I tend not to go and re work things as it kinda muddy,s thing,s up when I try .

What I can tell you is glazing is possible when dry as demonstrated on the water with a transparent colour .

These are quite good paints for someone to have a go with to get that oil experience without all the hassle of oils ,, however I wouldn't substitute my oils for them ,, just a little something to run alongside.

Drying times ? well in this weather very quick , mabe 24 hours will do it .

    Painting knife .

I have 3 knifes in my possession 2 mixing knifes + 1 painting knife , the one I use nearly all the time is the mixing knife on the right of the pic , I have had this knife over 30 years . What I did was to cut the end of it off at an angle to suit then emery paper the sharp corners off it ,, I absolutely love using this cheap little knife it has so much flex in it and you get a real feel of the paint under it as you use it .

I only ever use the other little mixing knife on the left of the pic the actual painting knife is just there to make the number up , its far too solid for me , I guess it would come in handy for removing wall paper

I used to love using oils with a knife when I was a kid. Used to paint a bit with my grandmother.

Well took the plunge and tried my first ever portrait. Not good not bad but learned a shit load......

Approx 8 x 7 in canvas panel, using W&N acrylics. Not impasto but not a lot of water either. Still getting used to the medium as expected. Can't say this was 'fun' but sure as hell interesting. Not unhappy with this first attempt at a portrait. Colors aren't really true to the painting but what can you expect from a camera phone

An interesting concept painting diagonally on a canvas , inspired me to have a go at a portrait in the future , only ever done one before myself and I got all the colours wrong ,, when I was painting it I thought it was all ok ,, when I sat back and looked at it when it was finished , there was only one place it was going ,,,,,,,,in the loft

Thinking on the old pallete knife thing ,, thought I would set myself a challenge today of painting a little pic 100% using my little cut down knife absolutely NO brushes .

Now when I say a little pic this is little only 7" by 5" now these little canvas covered boards come in packs of 6 for £1.99p , so at 35p per board just the thing to practice on .

A little evening lit landscape pic courtesy of my old knife .

I have put the knife on the pic so you can see the scale of things

I know you like using the old knife KW so I thought it might help you a bit to see what you can do on any scale really ,, its a lot less faffing around on a big canvas for sure .

Nevermind an enjoyable hour doing it

Portraits are not easy, I painted this picture, but the female vampire's face is not quite correct, the rest of it I am happy with.

Not sure why it's not showing, but if I do this it is mobile phone size.

    Jeez, 1 hour???

I could spend the rest of my life poking away at a canvas with a palette of every colour visible to the human eye and not manage to produce something remotely close to that!

I see that purple still has you in its thrall, perhaps you should change your username to The Artist Formerly Known As nigelandjan!

555 be nice to have a slice of his wad

actually the pic in the real looks very different its no so pronounced ,, infact I think I forgot to mention this is genuine oil not that water oil stuff ,,, and the colour is achieved by a varying mix of alizarin crimson + french ultra
