While both examples are excellent some thought must be given to what is doable by us mortals.... lol

For example Constable's boat is huge and in oils (a very reworkable medium) probably a real pain in the ass to accomplish in WC, Acrylics or pastels. Also the size is such that to do all the detailing in either of the pics I would need a brush with a single hair to get the details on something like a quarter sheet (WC) or an available canvas panel or stretched canvas for acrylics.

Of course I could paint on a wall of the neighbor's house I guess, that would at least allow me to use my current brush sets I think. But first would have to purchase a couple of gallons of gesso to prime his wall.

I would at least ask Marmites permission first on that one mate , he can get a tad fiery over things like that

Here are a couple that you might consider. No copyright issues as they are my own.

A doorway scene from Chanai India, considered a cityscape.

    A vendor in Chanai.

Enough detail to keep one on their toes.

Of course artistic license is paramount. Cut, crop, change lighting whatever suits your fancy and viewpoint. Could be interesting to see what each thinks is important or the POI.

Alright, I'll give it a go.

It has a person in it, to keep MtD happy, but enough other stuff that the person is not the only thing.

I think the 2nd is the best to paint. The first has too much silhouette stuff going on (which I like to paint actually) and the figures are big enough to be interesting but not so big that it takes 3 months to paint them. It'd also be interesting to see how people deal with the jetty.

The 3rd one is simply a great photo, but I think the woman is too prominent in the picture and would require work of a level that is beyond all but one of us (yes, Nige, you).

Yep, I'll agree and no fear of me jumping the gun, I've got a few work things on, and then I'm away this weekend for a cricket trip so it'll be next weekend at the earliest for me.

Any medium and our own interpretation of the scene, sounds like a winner... 2 it is for me. Now to see how many finished pieces we end up with.

Yep that sure is the KEY bit mate , thats where it gets interesting .

Just let it flow we all have the " artistic " licence to stamp on it .

I allways remember years ago I would be out somewhere painting and my ex would comment " Thats not like that ! why havent you painted x x + x over there ? "

er because this isnt a photo dear and I'll do what I like with it .

Just take a look at The Haywain for example , I have visited that site where it was painted many times , its nothing really like the painting and in reality never could be , but Constables beautifull composition + rendition of it delivers the goods .

Well I,m gonna make a start tomorrow , its not really my kinda thing , but it sure will do me good to get outta my comfort zone and try and learn how to address this subject.

I have had a look at the task in hand and have decided ( wrightly or wrongly ) IMO this has to be tackled in 3 elements , I,m not saying now what those 3 are in my mind , as I want to see others own interpretations of the job.

What I will do though is to record the job as I go along and post it up afterwards , to show how I arrived at my car crash

    Eh? What?

I started today by nicking some masking tape from EG. Hopefully, I'll have the canvas on the 'easel' by next weekend.

Funny you mention masking tape , I,ve had a couple of bloody disasters today .

I carefully measured my canvas board , lightly marked both sides with a pencil where I wanted my horizon line , put me masking tape across , spent nearly 2 hours carefully painting the sky ,, tape off to start slapping the sea up against it ,, and realised the horizon was sloping off to the left !

Re taped the sky and levelled the horizon with the sea AAGGHHHH !! Twat what a basic mistake .

Then went on to create the most delicious looking apple pie decorated with leaves I carefully made from left over pastry ,, as my eldest is coming round for his dinner soon and he loves apple pie and cream.

Only thing is he will be disappointed as on entry into the pre heated oven I caught my arm on the door and the pie somersaulted into the floor of the oven ,,, now resideing in the bin ,,,,,,,, hope its not an age thing

Using masking tape to make straight lines is cheating. Bin it and start again.

I'm using the tape to make sure the picture is A4-ish and will fit in my scanner.

OK have finished lolol decided that I would do a value study in monochrome, since I have trouble with contrasting shades thought it would be a good exercise. Fairly easy to do in WC but learned a lot. first time I've done a value study before painting something.

I alway seem to have trouble making sure the contrasts are enough to make some details discernible, not necessarily color contrast but tonal or shading values.

Not sure if I'll do it in acrylics or not....
