Is this thread just for art or for crafts, as well? Reason being I'm going to be making (or attempting to!) a brooch bouquet for my wedding. I wouldn't mind posting pics of the progress, but I don't want to muck up such a good thread

^ I would think some nice drawings of your intended work + some photos of the finished results would be all in order in the category of artwork

Thanks for asking , we have art in many forms , HOWEVER TBH NR I would think your efforts would really merit a thread of its own , I for one would be viewing with interest

Ok just to give you a little idea where I start and where I end up ,, this is gonna be a waterfall scene done with Unison pastels on Senhiller card ( black ) .

I have just marked out what,s what with a white pastel pencil

Here is the finished result ,, unfortunately I know I keep making excuses about this but I really havent got anywhere near enough colours in pastels , I am building a collection so things should get better. The Unison pastels I use are about £1.60p per stick ,, anyway with what I have this is the best I could do

    Nigel
that shadow in the middle of your work looks a little bit familiar ....
    I've got it !
it's Bankys pissing guardsman graffiti ,
nice touch adding your favourite yellow ochre as wee marks.
Is you and Bankys the same man ,
or is it just a homage to him ?

Ok now just to ring the changes and cause heart failure in the watercolour world I am gonna show you how I have reproduced the last painting I done in pastel in what is known as " mixed media " now to me whatever tools you have in your box ,, its up to you to make the most of it ,,so here goes ,, waterfalls via " mixed media "

I dont know if you can see here but I have reserved the white paper with masking fluid ( thats the yellow looking liquid rubber ) + I have roughly sketched out with a 2B pencil the outline of the painting

First washes of paint on french ultra + burnt sienna mixture,s of various strengths

Yeah I know it looks all wild and crap , but have patience these things take time , and there is a process we have to go through .

Few more colour washes added here , beginning to get the shape of where were going

Now after that lot has dried I have began to introduce my pastels ( oh sin of sins ) into the arena

Ok just about happy with this now

Just a tad of foreground illumination with a touch of mauve pastel and the border tape is off , I,ll call this one finished

Hope you have enjoyed the contrasts between the two pictures of the same subjects,, if this rain continues here tommorow I shall be having a go at KW,s mountain scene + another mountain scene of my own ,, happy painting !

BTW , I forgot to add the above was painted on some very very cheap Thai watercolour paper I bought in Ban Dung village last year , cost me about 60bht for the pad ,, just shy of A4 size . I am very pleased with it , the paper will withstand a bit of scrubbing work on it ,, it dont say but I am guessing it,s only about 120 gsm at the most as it cockles like hell with a wash on it ,, BUT for the money I aint gonna complain about that.

This is bloody good practise paper ,, and thats just what I,m using it for practisisng and learning

Great show! Many pastelers use watercolor as an under painting but seldom seen are WIPs. Nice work showing the two methods of achieving what you aimed for.

I think I have tried that paper you used.... Hated it with a passion, a drop of water it it cockles up like a piece of used toilet paper. If You like it there is a shop in Nong Khai that I think you can buy full sheets.

Sadly the only papers I've found in either Bangkok or locally are Canson (pills up with the slightest scrubbing) or Arches and only in pads of varying sizes. I did come across some watercolor boards in a small shop in Nong Khai and bought the lot... pretty sturdy and took paint fairly well.

It is rumored there is an 'art supply' shop in Udon, have yet to try and find it. Haven't had the urgent need to be totally frustrated again...

It is odd since Thai art can be really great stuff, they can't all be buying from O'seas.

Seeing as you lot didn't seem to like my beautiful digital art, I thought I'd try doing it 'old skool' and bought some expensive paints (75B) and a 5cm brush (about 25B). Mr Gibbon had already given me 3 sheets of paper that he said was crap, so I was all set to go.

    The main investment

    Bloody tree kept on moving

OK, the tree is happy now.

    About halfway there.

    And we're done.

I've scanned a version as well, but my scanner is slightly smaller than the cheap paper Mr Gibbon gave me.

I still prefer the one I did on the computer though.

555 I have a set very similar I bought in Ban Dung ,, when I took the top off the first tube it just ran out onto me toes ,, .

Joking aside a great effort , complimented by some classic overworking of the small brush ,, you need a bigger brush mate

A little tip with the foreground tree , there is really no need to draw it in , just straight in when your background is dry , which should be all of 10 seconds where you ol boys live .

BTW I do appreciate your digital skills , also very much appreciate any one having a go at painting anything on here .

Very impressed with all the paintings.

Nige, when you're over here, I want you to paint one of those Murial's on one of my walls.
    Like Stan and Hilda had!

I used the small brush to try and get a bit of texture on the otherwise plain lumps of colour and the tree was nicked from another photo I took on the same day, but I didn't know where it should go exactly - if I'd painted it in then I'd be knackered as I put it in the wrong place twice.

Still, not too disappointing for the first effort in nearly 30 years.

It's excellent, no doubt about that, the right amount of shading with the brown and baby poo green highlights, I'm going to borrow it for sure for my version, I'm already halfway through the same picture.

I was just going to say that!
I had three 'Dali' paintings painted for me on Samui about 17 years ago, cost me far more to get them framed in the UK than they cost.

This is the original photo of the tree, albeit photoshopped a bit, if it helps anyone.

As you can see I added a branch to my one in the painting as this one is a bit lopsided.

I just noticed Marmite ,, in your method of painting did you " mask " that tree out before you painted it ?? or did you ( surely not ) paint round it with your background ??

If you went round you must have the patience of a saint and extreme brush skills

You want something like this on your parlour wall Charlie ?? I can do some nice snowy mountains + a nice lake in front of it with some silver birch trees no probs if thats what you want .

You will have to provide your own 3 plastic ducks ok ?
