    Russo-Georgian War - Wikipedia

    Ceasefire agreement

Joint press conference by Russian president Dmitry Medvedev and French PresidentNicolas Sarkozy after negotiations on the plan

On 12 August, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced the cessation of the "peace enforcement" operation in Georgia.
"The operation has achieved its goal, security for peacekeepers and civilians has been restored. The aggressor was punished, suffering huge losses."
    [245]
Later that day he met French President Nicolas Sarkozy (the President-in-Office of the European Council) and approved a six-point proposal.[246]
The proposal originally had four points, but Russia firmly requested to add two more. Georgia requested that the additions be parenthesised; Russia objected and Sarkozy prevailed upon Saakashvili to accept the agreement

[247] According to Sarkozy and Saakashvili, a sixth point in the Sarkozy proposal was removed with Medvedev's consent.[248]
On 14 August, South Ossetian President Eduard Kokoity and Abkhaz President
Sergei Bagapsh also endorsed the plan.[249] The following day Condoleezza Rice travelled to Tbilisi, where Saakashvili signed the document in her presence.[250]
On 16 August, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed the agreement.[251]

The plan embodied the following statutes (dismissed additions are parenthesised):[247]

    1. No recourse to the use of force
    2. Definitive cessation of hostilities
    3. Free access to humanitarian aid (and to allow the return of refugees)
    4. Georgian military forces must withdraw to their normal bases of encampment
    5. Russian military forces must withdraw to the lines prior to the start of hostilities. While awaiting an international mechanism, Russian peacekeeping forces will implement additional security measures (six months)
    6. Opening of international discussions on the modalities of lasting security in Abkhazia and South Ossetia (based on the decisions of the U.N. and the OSCE)
After the ceasefire was signed, hostilities did not immediately end.[187]
Noting that civilians were fleeing before advancing Russian armour, troops and mercenaries, a reporter for The Guardian wrote on 13 August that "the idea there is a ceasefire is ridiculous".[252]

    Russian withdrawal

On 17 August, Medvedev announced that Russian military would start to pull out of Georgia the following day.[253]
Prisoners of war were swapped by the two countries on 19 August. A Georgian official said that although his country swapped five Russian soldiers for fifteen Georgians, among them two non-combatants, Georgia suspected that Russia kept two more Georgians.[254]
On 22 August, Russian forces withdrew from Igoeti and the Georgian police proceeded in the direction of Gori.[255] Russia claimed that withdrawal of Russian forces was finished; however, Russian checkpoints stayed near Gori and two Russian lookout stations stayed near Poti.[256]

On 8 September, Sarkozy and Medvedev signed another agreement on a Russian pullback from Georgia. After meeting with the French president, Medvedev said the withdrawal depended on assurances that Georgia would not use force...........

And on and on and on

This conflict will follow the same recipe.

    Don't fuck with russian minorities.

    Ukraine did

It'll give someone an excuse /opportunity

And those Russian troops 'massed at the border' are actually about 200km from the border. Real white knuckle stuff.

Notice how Crimea is still shown as being part of Ukraine. Note too that actually Crimea and Ukraine are linked by a narrow isthmus- but on this map the 'border' between the two is shown as a solid land mass- actually it is +90% water. Do they really think we are so stupid?

The arrogance and thinking he knows it all is just simply amazing.

You have to wonder if the current team was around when Gorby was ripe for the plucking just how much of a mess they'd make of it.

Here are the slavic idiots that have no spine. This is a typical Russian History scene. Kneel and bow down to your dictator.

A good comedy scene would be Putin getting up and throwing his shoe at each one of them.

The Personal Politics of Putin’s Security Council Meeting - The Moscow Times

The true drama was in how the most powerful men — and one woman — in Russia danced and squirmed around the president.

If the Russian president never faces a war crimes tribunal, he ought to face an industrial one, as he seems to cultivate a toxic work environment.

    Well said!

I've asked him a couple times already. Would you choose war in Europe or Ukraine not in NATO. I'd hope there is at least one of them of the lot that isn't clamoring for war.

It could be simplified even further. Would you choose war in Europe or choose that NATO should write a security guarantee with Russia?

The leaders chose war in Europe when a security guarantee was available just 2 weeks ago.

You can keep repeating that drivel, but Putin is the only one who has chosen war.

The Ukrainian army and neo-Nazi militias are occupying some land east of the Line of Control- ie within the Donetsk & Luhansk republics, in clear violation of the Minsk 2 Agreement. Nice position to shell civilians from. So the short term question is what Putin intends to do about this. Will he just leave them there, or perhaps wait for them to start shelling again before taking action? Or will he issue an Ultimatum and tell them to get out- and you can certainly be sure that if they don't comply, the Russian Army will drive them out. I guess we'll know in the next few days.

The chance of outright war has obviously increased. If the Ukrainians are indeed genuinely concerned about a Russian invasion, they are stupid to keep themselves in such an obvious defensive losing position- it is little short of suicidal frankly. They are grouped roughly along the Line of Control, and in several cases over it, and any infant can see that they are ridiculously easily outflanked by Russian battle groups coming in behind them. Thus, they would be sandwiched between the forces in the republics, and the flanking forces. So just how worried are they about an invasion of Ukraine proper? The current formation is obviously offensive, and aimed vs the Republics- but there is absolutely no chance for them there now. I guess we'll see. Meanwhile, cities like Kiev, Mariupol and Kharkov are comparatively lightly defended, and effectively there for the taking. Don't tempt him!

˜This Is Genius: Trump Praises Putins Move Into Ukraine–And Blasts Biden

    Oh this is hilarious.

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday said Russian President Vladimir Putin made a "genius" decision when he recognized two pro-Kremlin breakaway states in eastern Ukraine and ordered Russian troops across the border on a so-called "peacekeeping" mission, while slamming President Joe Biden's response to the crisis.

Trump lauded the move in an interview on the conservative radio program The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show, calling Putin "a guy who's very savvy."

The ex-president claimed Putin would have never thought to invade while he was president, blasting Biden for what he called “no response” sanctions, though Trump did not suggest what punishments he thought Russia should receive.

The comments marked the second time Tuesday Trump criticized Biden while largely giving Putin a pass, in a major shift from what had been nearly a month of silence from the ex-president on the escalating crisis in Ukraine.

In a statement Tuesday morning, Trump noted Russia "has become very rich during the Biden Administration" due to the rising price of oil, appearing to blame the administration for the spike despite broad global supply and demand issues.

Before Tuesday, Trump hadn't released a statement about Ukraine since January 24, when he sent a two sentence message saying: "What’s happening with Russia and Ukraine would never have happened under the Trump Administration. Not even a possibility!"

Trump was often criticized during his presidency, even by members of his own party, for appearing to have a cozy relationship with Putin and other autocratic leaders.

    CRUCIAL QUOTE

"That's the strongest peace force I've ever seen," Trump said. "There were more army tanks than I've ever seen. They're gonna keep peace all right."
