This thread is a perfect example why most users should stick to Windows, and not move to Linux
A perfect example of your "constructive" posts.![]()
You know Butterfly I disagree. If you compare like with like installing a new operating system onto a system then with windows your going to have some problems as well with drivers and connecting to a network etc. If your user is a complete newbie as well then they are always going to ask questions.
I was offered a free copy of Vista and turned it down because I just didn't think it was reliable enough. I was a windows programmer when I worked in the UK and everyone of the guys I worked with hates Vista. XP is OK but for browsing, wp, spread sheets and web developement Linux is better. The only problem I have with it is it does not run Adobe photoshop / Illustrator. I don't care what FF says The Gimp is a pile of arse.
Overall these days I think your better off in Linux, if your starting from scratch, or have a good understanding of computer science.
If you are an ordinary computer user and you don't like computers that much and have always used windows then maybe stick with it but you may be going up a dead end street.
There is an interface that copies PS's convoluted one that can be added to the Gimp.Originally Posted by Jardine
Although not a graphics designer, I do the odd bit of logo and web graphics work; using PS is a pain in the ass, as far as I am concerned. I woiuld never learned as much as I have without The Gimp. In fact I'm downloading 2.4 right now...
Will it not work through wine?Originally Posted by Jardine

What? The fact that a complete imbecile like CMN can install linux and all the basic applications he needs without any problems at all is a reason to stay on windowsOriginally Posted by Butterfly

Yes, it was surprising to see that.Originally Posted by NickA

Writing's on the wall, lom. Better dust off that CNE, dump your MS stock and get a real job!![]()
^If you stick to a stable version of XP, it's an OK operating system.... I just find it a bit boring and all the newer versions seem to cause no end of problems.
Not at all, but fed up with a crappy expensive operating system who comes without any usable software apart notepad. A crappy web browser, and what more ? Ah yes, explorer.
Install a GNU/Linux distrib and you will get thousands of free softwares and get rid of viruses and other malwares who like to sit in your windows system.
Teakdoor is maybe not the right place to ask about your Linux OS problems, every distrib has a very efficient forum (Ubuntu is one of the best) where you can find answers to your problem just using the search tool.Originally Posted by lom

Well I took down the Mandriva One and burnt the Iso image to disc. Now I'm going to investigate all these different options.
I can always ask CMn if I have problems![]()

You're not tryin to say that that ain't about 50% of the job on Windows systems are you?Originally Posted by lom

all i can say is that from a fairly incompetent users viewpoint and a straight comparison between ubuntu and windows, ubuntu is better by a country mile.
Nice job title, tell me when you have a vacant position.Originally Posted by DrB0b

just been scanning down all the applications available in the package manager.
there are 1000,s of them.
what do you all find useful?
^you should be able to filter the result.... ie. if you're interested in DVD applications type DVD into the search box.
CMN stop being a lazy and download some Ubuntu Ebooks and learn some from them.
