What internet security do you use and why?

I bought myself a nice laptop (Acer Extenza 5820G - very nice) three months ago. It came with a Norton anti-virus package but only a 3-month trial version and they want me to renew it NOW. It seems to work okay but I know there are a lot better out there.

In Thailand I always used freebies and they seemed okay but occasionally something would get in a really fcuk up my computer.

I have been checking out the net over the last week or so for security packages and have found sites like the following:

Internet Security Suites Software Review 2008

Bitdefender & ZoneAlarm seem pretty good.

What do you use and why ?

I use zone alarm that works fine and doesn't eat up your ram like norton does running all these stupid background checks. With norton you get nothing but problems and conflicts in my personal opinion, whenever I buy a new computer the first thing I do in get rid of it. FYI if you want to uninstall notorn you have to download a bit of software called norton removal tool from the norton site as norton will not let you uninstall it the normal way.

Shoreline Firewall configured through MCC (Mandriva Control Center), no antivirus.

Why, coz it's the default firewall installed by default and it is efficient. Don't need antivirus.

None, my internet connection is so shite the chances of me being connected long enough to actually receive a virus are tiny.

Thank you Thailand, for you are a great country with great infractructure and a nation of people to rely on to deliver products and services that are fit for purpose

Recently switched to Comodo firewall and AVG 8 antivirus. Why? Both free, both seem to do a reasonable job. Also run Spybot occasionally.

^When did they make one of those?

At home, iptables mostly, if I'm feeling lazy I'll use ufw to do some config. I always have snort running as a daemon, use oinkmaster to keep it up to date. As well as standard logs I also have portsentry running. Everything except my boot partition is encrypted, inside the encrypted system I also have some truecrypt partitions. For my dodgier net activities (political, btw) I use tor and privoxy (stops DNS leaks) to access forbidden sites and run my blogs and personal websites on the Onion and i2p domains. My mail is dealt with by spamassassin and razor/pyzor and for securish correspondence I use pgp, remailers, and one-time drop box services. Users on my servers are chrooted, as are most of the services, I did use OTP for a while but that was a pain in the ass, all logins are through SSH and if I find the twat that buggered up it's key generation I'll make him feel the pain I felt having to change every key. Chkrootkit and tripwire also on the systems. There's a few other things running too but off the top my head I can't remember what they are right now, browser plugins and the like. My main highly-paranoid system runs off a live writable debian distro on an 8GB USB stick I keep around my neck.

At work I leave my system pretty much wide open as I don't care that much and we've got some pretty hefty firewalls to deal with the chinese brute-force bots.

I use the standard windows firewall, Avast (free), and a program called Advanced Windows Care (also free). Since installing these have run Spybot search and Destroy several times and it finds nothing to deal with. This combo seems to be pretty secure and all for free and very little system overhead in the process.

    Good Luck

Just the built in Mac firewall, no antivirus. Not because Im a smug "macs dont get viruses" type, just because AV programs for Mac tend to be pretty crap. No problems as yet.
