    Unable to open most applications

I wonder if anyone can assist.
Currently i am unable to open most programmes.
I am ususally told that "windows can not open the file"
I have tried to reinstall windows to no avail as I am unable to use most .exe files.

I can however use the internet via IE

    any suggestions please?

Get Trend Micro internet Security 2008 Free!

    Might show something

^^ sounds like your computer is fcked, better get a new 'un.

on a more serious note, have you moved any folders around, it sounds like the exe files etc have been moved.

Try a full restart on the computer, more often than not this will fix most problems on a PC.

    in any case, it's rubbish.

how does a re start heal all the problems?

it sounds like a hard drive failure to me.

So a restart will fix it after a full OS installation? Are you Butterfly by any chance?

I reinstalled Windows once - except I didn't. I thought I had reinstalled it, but it turned out I installed a second copy of it (call it XP B). XP B couldn't open the programs I'd installed under XP A. You can find out how many copies of Windows you've got installed by following these steps.

    Start >
    Settings >
    Control Panel >
    System >
    Advanced >
    Startup and Recovery >
    Settings >

In the Default Operating System dropdown box, if you've got two or more options, then you've got two or more operating systems installed.

One of them will probably run your old programs, but you need someone else to tell you how to proceed from this point. I fuck up my own machine with alarming regularity and am therefore not the best person to hold your hand on this.

    give ubuntu a go benbaaa.

early impressions, it's far quicker, more secure and user friendly than windows.

Oh, yes. After I got rid (somehow) of my XP A, I had to reinstall all programs for XP B.

But I've just got my XP running fast and smooth. With all my fav programs on it. What are the benefits of switching?

CMN will get off your back for one. Thing is if you do switch he's your Linux buddy.
You can download a Live CD, this is the Linux OS burnt onto a disc so you can try it without installing it. Good way of seeing if you get on with it.

    Thanks all for the input.
Apologies for not coming abck sooner but even the internet access died this morning.
Previously I had been unable to reinstall windows. however late tis afternoon i was bale to do so but was still unable to open most applications.
Anyway I think that the end is nigh for this pc and I will put it out of its misery.
I will buy a laptoop very soon.
I see Commart is on at Queen Sirikit this weekend I might be able to pick up a good deal there.
    Thanks all once again

Did you erase the HDD before installing Windows ? If you didnt and just reinstalled it without formatting the hard drive its not going to make much difference.

I've re-installed windows over a near death hard drive, but things don't work right and keep going wrong.
