    it's working now.

even though it doesn't have a vlc icon, it is opening in vlc as a default.

is there an equivalent to c cleaner for ubuntu or isn't such an application needed?

i use it to clear my cookies.

^I would recommend digikam, but I think you'll need to install it first. There are plenty of others, but it's the one I've found to be best.

You could just open it in a browser and then copy the photos into a new folder in /home (eg. /home/photos), but digikam will automatically sort you photos into folders by date (eg /home/photos/2008-10-06/) which I find useful.

When I plug my cam in I have to mount it on one box on the other it gets auto mounted. And this is one reason I am not so good with end user support. I want a simple system that lets me do what I want when I want how I want.

It's good that Linux is getting more user friendly. Currently it is a viable alternative to Windoze and no more complex to use. The nice thing (about Linux) is; it is flexible enough to allow us fossils that prefer to do things ourselves, to do so without undue hoop jumping.

How do i extract rar files.

a lot of the movies from ip torrents are rar format.

    extract here doesn't work.

so i added winrar, but am still getting the default extract application whatever it is.

    I'm really liking ubuntu.

had to pop over to the windows partition to unrar a movie file though.

    can someone help me please.

aside from this little inconveniance, it's great.

I am seriously considering integrating one of my 160 gig partitions fully into ubuntu.

is it my co-incidence that i have installed at a time when the internet is sharp? or is browsing much quicker than in windows?

btw, i must thank jardine for helping me out with the install.

Having removed the excess baggage that is and comes with Windows you will find that most operations will be quicker.

So tell us what benefits are you getting, as you seem to want to do all the same things you were doing before in Windows.

Just seen the above from Jxp

definitely faster and the add/remove programmes funtion is excellent.

it is much easier to find your way round the system.

    seems a whole lot smaller.

also no need for anti virus or c cleaner or anything.

Install wine and you can use Winrar and Utorrent if you want.

Or you could download Rar for Nix and do it by tying.

How I used to do it back in the day.

I have installed winrar but not wine.

    what is that?

    have one other issue aswell.

tried to unrar a movie torrent this morning but failed.

went over to windows to sort it out, now the file that i fudged up seems to be undeletable.

I trash it and it just jumps back up onto my desktop again and again.

go into the package manager and type wine
should bring it up. Install it.

Some windows programs will run quite happily in linux. I prefer Utorrent so I use wine for that.

NickA knows Ubuntu better than I.

thanks, will do as soon as digikam has finished installing.

can you run nero on linux?
if not, what is the best alternative DVD burner?

don't like the ready made default one.

^^you should have "ark" installed, right click on the archive and "open with..." ark (should be one of the options. If not you just have to install it.

Wine is for running windows .exe files.... it's worth installing, not all programs work, but quite a few do.

Best for disk burning is K3B, again this is probably already installed, but if not install it. Brasero is another one, but I've never used it.

can not delete the movies i downloaded in ubuntu.

things just pop straight back onto my desktop.

it's happening with the dirty sanchez movie as well as definitely maybe, they are the only 2 movies I have downloaded in ubuntu so far.

no problem deleting movies i downloaded in windows through ubuntu though.

^don't save them onto your desktop, save them in /home/videos or /home/downloads. Create the folder using your file manager and then go to options in Azureus and point it to the correct folder.

You will have to learn about users and permissions... when you log on you are just a normal user and so don't have much power to mess about with the system, this is to stop idiots (like you) from cocking everthing up.

That drive will be fat32 or NTFS and you have to fek about with them to do everything properly.

    it's ntfs.

i think i'll have to go into windows to sort it out and after that i'll save the movies on the ubuntu partition.
