^Yeah. I don't want to be misconstrued as suggesting cancer is funny. It isn't, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, even Karl Rove. Maybe Atwater's conversion was heartfelt and peering into the abyss really did provide an understanding of what's important in life. He may very well have apologized without expecting anything in return, but he did at least apologize. It's a shame his spin doctor heirs (of whatever cynical ideological persuasion) appear to have learnt nothing from that.

REPORT: Republican Offices Have Fewer Women In High-Paying Jobs
A new report from National Journal shows a huge pay disparity between men and women on Capitol Hill — a disparity that is far larger in Republican offices than it is in Democratic ones.
The real-dollar disparity, on average, between male and female Republicans working in the House of Representatives and the Senate is about $10,000. National Journal offers the key findings from the report:
• For all House staff, women made on average $5,862.56 less annually than men.
• Female Republican House staff made on average $10,093.09 less annually than male Republican House staff.
• For all Senate staff, women made $7,277.69 less annually on average than male staff.
• Female Republican Senate staff made on average $9,805.85 less annually than male Republican Senate staff.

Republican Rep: I Don't Think Someone Who Is Diagnosed With A Brain Tumor Should Have Health Care Provided
On Monday evening, Rep. David Dreier (R-CA) said that insurance companies should be allowed to discriminate against people with brain tumors during a House Rules Committee debate of the GOP’s bill repealing the Affordable Care Act. The law, which Republicans will vote to eliminate on Wednesday, includes a provision prohibiting insurance companies from turning away sick people.
But Dreier suggested that these individuals would be better off enrolling in state-based “high-risk insurance pools,” that could offer coverage to the individuals who are turned away from the individual health care market because they are too costly to cover:
DREIER: And I believe my state of California has a structure in place to deal with pre-existing conditions. It’s a pooling process, which I think is one worthy of consideration, because while I don’t that think someone who is diagnosed with a massive tumor should the next day be able to have millions and millions and millions of dollars in health care provided, I do believe that there can be a structure to deal with the issue of pre-existing conditions.

Iowa Republican says government illegitimate, declares herself U.S. Senator
An Iowa woman who was running for a state Senate seat has dropped that bid after deciding the U.S. government is a sham, and has instead unilaterally declared herself a U.S. Senator from the Republic of Iowa in an alternative government, the Republic for the United States of America.
As Jason Noble of the Des Moines Register first reported, the candidate, Randi Shannon, had been running for the state’s 34th Senate district. However, she recently came to believe that the real U.S. government was replaced with an illegal one after the Civil War so, rather than continue her state-level pursuit, she dropped that bid and named herself a Senator of the what she thinks is the true government.

The Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board released a damning report(PDF) on Friday that fined the Minnesota Republican Party and its former chair nearly $30,000 for intentionally circumventing campaign finance law in 2010. The report also found the party’s finances are plagued by sloppy bookkeeping and “out of control” spending.
The Board fined the state party $26,900 and its former party chair Tony Sutton $3,000 for taking inappropriate contributions during the 2010 recount for Minnesota’s three-way governor’s race, according to the Star Tribune.

Senate votes against moving forward on campaign finance bill
The Senate on Monday rejected a Democratic effort to move forward with campaign finance legislation.
In a 51-44 vote that fell along party lines, the Senate blocked the DISCLOSE Act, the Democrats’ most recent attempt to answer the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision with legislation. Sixty votes were necessary for the bill to move forward.
The bill would require companies, unions and other entities to report campaign spending of more than $10,000.

From Thomas E. Mann and Norman J. Ornstein’s It’s Even Worse Than It Looks:
"The second [of two sources of dysfunction in current American politics] is the fact that, however awkward it may be for the traditional press and nonpartisan analysts to acknowledge, one of the two major parties, the Republican Party, has become an insurgent outlier—ideologically extreme; contemptuous of the inherited social and economic policy regime; scornful of compromise; unpersuaded by conventional understanding of facts, evidence, and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition. When one party moves this far from the center of American politics, it is extremely difficult to enact policies responsive to the country’s most pressing challenges."

Recently, Governor Nikki Haley (R-SC) took an ax to the state’s budget, hacking away a whopping $67.5 million from that budget, including funds for teacher pay raises, funding for the arts, and $450,000 for the state’s non-profit rape crisis centers:’
She cut more than $400,000 used to help pay for the state’s network of 23 domestic violence and rape crisis centers. In her veto message, she angered supporters by calling that portion of the budget — which also included money for people with sickle cell anemia, kidney disease and hemophilia — a distraction from the state’s larger mission of providing public health care.
She made matters worse when, in a Facebook post, she referred to rape crisis centers as a special interest.
In the vote to restore funding for the crisis centers, the South Carolina House voted unanimously, 111-0, to reinstate the funding. And lawmakers had some stern words for the governor:
“Of all the vetoes that need to be overridden, this is the most important one,” said Republican Senator Jake Knotts, voicing support for the rape crisis centers. ”Victims of assault, women and children, are the ones who need the most help. It’s money well-spent,” he said.: War on Women Update: Arizona Sued, Haley Vetoed and North Carolina Scores
This should be a surprise to no one..
While Republicans trying to justify voter suppression bills continue to struggle to find any actual cases of voter fraud, once again a Republican politician may be the exception that proves the rule.
While voter fraud is exceedingly rare — a person is more likely to be hit by lightning than to commit it — then-Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White (R-IN) was convicted of it earlier this year. Now, a candidate for Pinal County Supervisor in Arizona has dropped out amid questions about who cast ballots on behalf of his long-deceased girlfriend.
The Arizona Republic reports:
A Pinal County supervisor candidate has withdrawn from the race in the wake of voter-fraud allegations involving a former companion who, records show, has continued to vote by absentee ballot in the five years since her death. John Enright, 66, had been seeking the Republican nomination for county supervisor of District 5, an area that includes Apache Junction and Gold Canyon. …
His statement made no mention of the scandal unleashed in an anonymous, undated letter sent several weeks ago to the Pinal County Recorder’s Office. As recently as this year, the letter alleged, someone had been filling out and mailing in absentee ballots addressed to a woman who died on Feb. 3, 2007. The woman, Sheila Nassar, and Enright lived together at the time of her death.
Enright has not been charged with any crime and told the Arizona press “I look forward to learning more about these allegations. If they are indeed formal allegations, I will defend myself. I very much look forward to clearing my name.”
But if Enright was indeed casting ballots in his late girlfriend’s name, he would be guilty of what the Pinal County Recorder called “an absolute act of fraudulent voting” — and a Class 6 felony.
Voter identification laws would have done nothing to prevent the sort of absentee ballot fraud alleged here. And the fact that this is already a felony shows that laws already on the books are clearly sufficient to punish this exceedingly rare crime.

First Thoughts: The center cannot hold - First ReadOne of the most underreported stories of this presidential election is how the Republican brand is in FAR WORSE shape than the Democratic brand. In our most recent NBC/WSJ poll, the GOP’s fav/unfav was 34%-43% vs. the Democrats’ 40%-40%. Indeed, the GOP has had a worse fav/unfav than the Democrats in every single NBC/WSJ poll (that’s 14 of them!!!) since Jan. 2011, after Republicans won control of the House. So as the Tea Party/grassroots/anti-establishment conservative wing of the GOP has become MORE powerful, the GOP’s overall brand image has gone down, especially with indies. It is hard not to believe these two facts aren’t connected. And this raises the question: Will this be a drag on Romney? Or here’s another way to put it: How can this not be a drag on him?

...He called his Democratic friends “much more congenial” than Republican ones.

Hanna referred specifically to a controversial letter sent to the State Department by Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) and four others earlier this month that warned of possible influence exerted on the agency by the Muslim Brotherhood.
“We render ourselves incapable of governing when all we do is take severe sides,” he said. “I have to say that I’m frustrated by how much we — I mean the Republican Party — are willing to give deferential treatment to our extremes in this moment in history.”
