If the intention of the Counteroffensive was to simply kill Russians and destroy their equipment then perhaps Ukraine is doing well, although at what cost is unknown. However, that was not the objective and would not be sufficient to bring an end to this war under mutual terms let alone terms that were advantageous to Ukraine. Russia has too many resources that it can bring to bear, should it deem necessary, and is geared towards a conscript army with minimum training.





Lets look at the strategic objective, to reach the Sea of Azov in order to cut the Russian supply line to Crimea and isolate their troops in the East and West of Ukraine. The map above shows just the current penetration towards the halfway point, Tokmak. It is nothing more than a small salient that is in danger of being cut off from supply with a strong counter attack from Russia some time in the future. It has to move quickly towards Tokmak and, at the same time, spread East and West to ensure the supply chain is maintained. That's a tall order if this was July, but it is almost October and there's about a month of fighting with heavy armour available. Abrams has arrived, but too late to be put to use. Air superiority is still with the Russians. Progress is slow. WW1 slow. And you think this counteroffensive is a success...
