It shouldn't be this way, and it is highly regrettable. But if the USA is to have a functional government after the next elections, the Dem's will need a majority in Congress as well as the Presidency- which while possible, is optimistic. The fault for this lies with the GOP and their petulant, serial obstructionism. My how they have changed from the days they deserved to be called republican.
I wonder how the far right-wing will feel about their candidate (who is sticking by gays) Mitt the Twit after learning he still supports gays in the Boy Scouts?
The more the far right-wing finds out about Dim Mitt I am sure they will come to love him even more.
Campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said that Romney’s 1994 comments, where he said that the Boy Scouts should welcome members who are gay, “remains Romney’s position today.”
The announcement from Romney’s campaign comes as Eagle Scout Zach Wahls, who became famous after a YouTube video of a pro-equality speech he gave in 2011 went viral, is unveiling a new “Scouts for Equality” web site highlighting broad support for allowing gays to participate in the Boy Scouts among Eagle Scouts, Scout leaders, politicians, and celebrities.
In the video released by GLAAD, Romney, a former national board member of the Boy Scouts of America, said that sexual orientation should not be a factor when it comes to participating in scouting.
"I feel that all people should be allowed to participate in the Boy Scouts, regardless of their sexual orientation,” Romney says in the video, prefacing his support for gays and lesbians by stating his belief “that the Boy Scouts of America does a wonderful service for this country. I support the right of the Boy Scouts of America to decide what it wants to do on that issue.”: Steve Rothaus' Gay South Florida
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
The fault lies with the electorate. There is a real schism in America, as evidenced by the divisions among the American posters on this forum, between those that feel that America is about teamwork, cooperation and joining together for the common good and those who define Americanism as about individualism, narrow selfish interests and seeking to deny the government responsiblities that improve the quality of civilization for all.
Probably way too optimistic, IMO.Originally Posted by sabang

Awash in money, they will also concentrate on 2014 Congressional elections, further crippling any progress Obama can make for the country.
As Humbert observed, it is the American electorate who have to decide, and they have not always been too reliable to look after their own interests. Worrisome.
I repeat: sometimes I feel like I'm riding in the same historical vortex as the Weimar Republic.
It is a bit of a logical conundrum actually- those "Amerka, fuck yeh" types are prominent in the right wing of the GOP yet when the shit hits the fan, they do not sound proudly American at all- nope, now it's every man for himself, Amerka be damned. They are not even willing to make a serious effort to pay down the massive debts they have landed their nations next generation with, worse than that they actually want to downgrade the same education and other government services they themselves benefited from. Truly the 'gimme gimme' generation.
^^The conundrum is that the right seeks to define the opposition as anti-business, pro-union, pro-muslim, pro hand-out etc. They are intent upon characterizing the opposition in terms of ideological extremes. The issues become secondary to ideology. They know that these emotional arguments resonate at the level of local contituencies. That is why people like Michelle Bachmann are elected and hold on to office but could never succeed on a national political level. The will of the electorate at a local level has tipped the scales of the house of representatives to the right thereby effectively blocking any progress or compromise on important issues.

^^The hilarious thing about that is that boasting about what was perhaps Mittens' biggest policy win winds up being considered a gaffe. Poor Mittens, has to run against O and himself.
It is a conundrum, rationalized by the "elites" by the trickle down economics myth, which the working stiffs buy into. Having been softened up by the Obama-is-a-Muslim-socialist-fascist-commie-who-was-born-in-Kenya-and-wants-to-steal-your-babies, they think they are doing right by America. The elites don't care: corporations are the powers who have their allegiance...a conveniently transferable allegiance, no matter what country you're in.
I can only hope that enough working stiffs have seen through the circular, non-sense rhetoric of the Right that offers nothing for them but worse ecomonic success for themselves and their kids. On a national level, you may get enough Americans to elect Obama. On a local level the true believers tend to cluster and can be picked off more easily.

That's fine but Obama isn't the man to do the job having no business experience and surrounding himself with an administration who also have had no hands-on business acumen...
Mitt has...

Several. The Obama campaign's negative attacks on Romney related to his role at Bain are if not lies are innuendo he is unfit to be President even though Romney had little to do with the Bain behavior in question. Everything from blaming Romney for the current unemployment to playing an instrumental role in the current economic situation. The latest being Romney is personally responsible for the death of a woman because Bain shut down a plant.Originally Posted by MrG

These negative campaign tactics may be smart politically but I agree with Huffington on this one.
"Half a billion dollars and all we got is this lousy election? That's about how much has been spent in the presidential race so far, and by the time it's all said and done, the Center for Responsive Politics estimates the price tag will reach about $2.5 billion. That's a lot of money -- and much of it will have been spent on what is sometimes called "messaging." With a $2.5 billion bankroll, you'd think pretty much every important issue would get its place in the sun. Well, as it turns out, you don't always get what you pay for."

Any suggestion of the sort would be foolish. Republicans way ahead. After all they have been doing it for 6 years.Originally Posted by MrG
My point is not to keep score. It is the idea that campaigns for any office must focus on the merits of the candidate if the electorate is to have any hope of making a rational choice. All I see now is voters will be faced with not voting for a candidate because the guy they do vote for isn't as bad.
It's a truth but will happen when pigs fly.Originally Posted by MrG
I share your hope but not your optimism. No reason to believe the same campaign tactics will not continue indefinitely. They will only change when American's punish candidates via the polls for running campaigns which are completely devoid of substantive debate on the issues. How many times have you heard the "Republican" party admit the bleedin' obvious- that they were tragically wrong? From where I sit, it is very surprising that they are even in this race at all. It's sizable rump of staunch supporters are now complaining about the negative campaign tactics (and they are right), but they made it mainstream. "As ye sow".
Truth be told, how can the GOP actually campaign on the Issue's, given their parlous record and serial Denial?
Yes, I know. The "Obama Campaign" denies any association with the super pac. Sure, I believe that.Originally Posted by Humbert

"WASHINGTON -- Newt Gingrich admitted Wednesday evening that Mitt Romney's presidential campaign has no evidence the Obama administration dropped work requirements from the nation's welfare law, contradicting a Romney TV ad released a day earlier.
"We have no proof today, but I would say to you under Obama’s ideology it is absolutely true that he would be comfortable sending a lot of people checks for doing nothing," Gingrich told CNN's Anderson Cooper. "I believe that totally."
The Romney campaign on Tuesday released a TV ad claiming President Barack Obama "gutted" the 1996 welfare reform law, which changed welfare from a federal entitlement to a program run by states within federal rules...."

i read an article recently that said the romney campaign was concerned that its numbers had flatlined with low income whites in ohio ........ and now we have the romney campaign resorting to this sort of race baiting.
expect a strong push back from the obama campaign on this lie.

Since Romney is on record as saying he likes to be able to fire people who provide services to him perhaps his campaign staff view being hopelessly incompetent as some sort of job security.Originally Posted by raycarey

All the attack ads I have seen coming from Obama's side have been real and justified. They may sensationalize a bit but are for the most part true. The right would like to divide and destroy America. It is under their pathetic watch that Americans have been spoon fed failed economic theories. Americans have much to their own ignorance watched their hard earned dollar be taken from their hands and put into the greedy Mitts of the corpo-rapist oligarchy.
So vote in the vacant American political system because nothing much will change. If you are a rich, racist, pasty faced mother fucker than you will vote for Mitt. If you are someone that still is fighting for a new world then you will vote for Obama. He is the finger in the leak until something better comes along.
A great post here;
If there’s one thing our society needs more of, it’s teenagers speaking out on political issues. Bill Maher, in his final New Rule of the night, pointed to two instances where conservatives went through teenage vessels to spread their message and observed that the young voices sounded much like the old ones. Maher found this somewhat discouraging for conservatives, because, as he put it, that would mean their political arguments make them sound like teenagers.

Maher introduced his audience to Caiden Cowger, a fourteen-year-old conservative with his own radio show. Cowger got some national attention this month for accusing President Obama and Vice President Biden of “making kids gay.” Maher couldn’t get over the fact how much this teenager sounds like Rush Limbaugh. Maher also reminded viewers about Jonathan Krohn, the young teenager who spoke at CPAC a few years ago.
Maher said he understands that all teenagers can be assholes at one time or another in this important phase in their lives, mostly where politics aren’t concerned, so he saved his comments for adults in the conservative movement enabling kids like Cowger and Krohn.
“When 14-year-old boys sound exactly like you do and can produce radio shows and books and speeches that sound exactly like yours, maybe you should rethink the shit that comes out of your mouth.
“Remember the Republican debates we had this year? They applauded for the idea of letting a sick man without insurance die. Herman Cain got cheers for saying he’d electrify the border fence. They booed a gay man serving his country in the military. No wonder 14-year-old boys can do your act, you act exactly like 14-year-old boys. There’s no ideology here. It’s just about being a dick.”
In summation, Maher ended by explaining just how easy it would be for a teenager to host Limbaugh’s Sean Hannity‘s shows: “Step one, be a giant dick. Step two, there is no step two.”

Don't know what your definition of 'gutted' is but that's what indeed Obama has done: "But now, under the guise of providing states greater “flexibility” in operating their welfare programs, the Obama administration claims unjustifiable authority to weaken or waive the work requirements at the heart of the reform law. There’s just one problem: The law is clear that those requirements can’t be waived."
It gets a bit convoluted so go here for an objective explaination. Bottom line, looks like the work requirement clause will be going to court.
So, in other words, the ad where Romney says 'gutted' is correct as it stands.![]()
