Romney Persona Non Grata In Italy For Bain’s Deal Skirting Taxes: Romney Persona Non Grata in Italy for Bain

That’s because Bain Capital, under Romney as chief executive officer, made about $1 billion in a leveraged buyout 12 years ago that remains controversial in Italy to this day. Bain was part of a group that bought a telephone-directory company from the Italian government and then sold it about two years later, at the peak of the technology bubble, for about 25 times what it paid.

Bain funneled profits through subsidiaries in Luxembourg, a common corporate strategy for avoiding income taxes in other European countries, according to documents reviewed by Bloomberg News. The buyer, Italy’s biggest telephone company, now has a total market value less than what it paid Bain and other investors for the directory business.

    snip

Romney himself probably earned more than $50 million, and possibly as much as $60 million from the Italian directory sale of Seat Pagine Gialle SpA, according to a person familiar with the matter. The deal turned into one of the biggest windfalls of his tenure.

^He bought it from the Italian government, made a huge profit selling it to Italy’s biggest telephone company, and they lost their asses? I knew there was one born every minute but I didn't know it applied to countries. Maybe he shouldn't be president, but Obama could put him in charge of selling bridges and waterfront property in Florida to flush overseas buyers. We'd wipe out the deficit within a year.

    This.

There are plenty of valid reasons to question Romney, but if Bain had the chance to sell a phone-directory company for 25 times what they paid for it at the height of the telecoms bubble then they'd have been nuts to walk away from that deal.

Still, it'd be interesting to see what taxes Mitt paid on his nice little chunk of change from the deal.

Romney should promise to release his taxes when Bobo the circus clown promises to release his transcripts from Columbia, where he was enrolled as an international student from Indonesia.

Romney has a history of calling for tax returns of opponents and then not releasing his own..

With the tax-filing deadline looming, Republican Senate candidate Mitt Romney yesterday challenged Sen. Edward M. Kennedy to disclose his state and federal taxes to prove he has ‘nothing to hide,’ but another GOP rival, John R. Lakian, called Romney’s move ‘bush league’ ‘It’s time the biggest-taxing senator in Washington shows the people of Massachusetts how much he pays in taxes,” said Romney, a business consultant from Belmont. Romney said he would disclose his own state and federal taxes for the last three years ‘on the very day that Kennedy turns over his taxes for public scrutiny.’ [Boston Globe, 4/19/94]

And when that doesn't work he starts crying for the tax returns of his opponent's spouse a few years later:

At the moment, however, Mr. Romney is trying to have it both ways. On April 16, he lambasted his most likely Democratic foe, Shannon O’Brien who discloses her tax return for filing separately from her husband who does not. The husband is Emmett Hayes, a former state representative and until recently a Beacon Hill lobbyist. One of Mr. Hayes’s clients was Enron. Mr. Romney is in high dudgeon that Ms. O’Brien hasn’t released Mr. Hayes’s tax forms with her own. ‘Her hands aren’t clean!’ he says…If Romney & Healey, who are candidates, won’t release their tax forms, they have no business demanding that Mr. Hayes, who isn’t a candidate, do so. [Editorial, Providence Journal Bulletin, 5/9/02]

^No, they're sealed away tighter than Barry Sotero's bunghole when the topic arises.

Before this embarrassment of a president demands anything of others, he should be as forthcoming. It's sickening. It's shameful. Obama's a hypocritical clown.

    And mark these words.

"You didn't build that," will be his undoing.

Indeed. And here's his Student ID Card:

The more vetting of this Indonesian Imbecile that's done confirms he's not qualified to be the janitor at a Dog Pound:

"If Obama is Indonesian, he obviously isn’t an American citizen. Consequently, he is constitutionally unqualified to be president — as many have been insisting for years.

It would also be interesting to learn where his money came from during his Columbia days, and why he had so much of it following a mysterious trip to Pakistan.
If Barry Soetoro’s grades turn out to be what you would expect from a guy with far more attitude than work ethic, it will raise further questions: who kept opening doors for this product of communist mentoring, and why?"

"The Columbia years are a hole in the sprawling Obama hagiography. In his two published memoirs, the 47-year-old Democratic nominee barely mentions his experience there. He refuses to answer questions about Columbia and New York -- which, in this media age, serves only to raise more of them. Why not release his Columbia transcript? Why has his senior essay gone missing?"

Heh...the reason nobody remembers Obama at Columbia might be because he was admitted as a foreign student named Barry Sotero?

    Nobody remembers him? More lies.

We’re not sure why, but this false claim has been forwarded widely in recent days, judging by the number of queries we’ve received.
Barack Obama was a transfer student from California’s Occidental College when he came to Columbia University in 1981 as a 20-year-old junior. More than 20,000 students currently attend Columbia. The enrollment in the early ’80s might have been lower, but not everybody would have met or remembered Obama. And it’s absolutely untrue that "not one person has ever come forward" from his years there, or that he is "the man who wasn’t there."
Columbia University proudly claims Obama as a 1983 graduate. The university magazine Columbia College Today profiled him as far back as 2005, after he was elected to the U.S. Senate.

^ burns at politico makes it very clear what those poll numbers mean....voters just don't like romney, and they do like the president.

Mitt Romney's unfavorability numbers are on the upswing again: Although 40 percent of voters now say they hold a favorable opinion of the former Massachusetts governor — virtually unchanged from May — those holding negative views of him ticked higher in the new survey, from 45 percent to 49 percent.
Meanwhile, President Obama remained in positive territory on that measure, with 53 percent of voters reporting favorable opinions of him. Only 43 percent say they feel unfavorably toward him

^and more bad news for Dim Mitt

But Obama's lead over Romney among registered voters was 49 percent to 42 percent, up slightly from the 6-point advantage the president held a month earlier over the former Massachusetts governor.

The results of the monthly poll - in which a majority of voters agreed that the economy is the most important problem facing the United States - suggest that the Obama campaign's efforts to paint Romney as being out of touch with the concerns of middle-class Americans could be preventing the Republican from gaining momentum in the race.

You want to talk about embarrassment? Check out this latest negative ad against Mitt The Leader by Obama's campaign. I'd be ashamed to show my face in public if I were an Obamabot...

"The Obama political machine's race to the bottom has dived deep beneath the muck of Harry Reid's lies about Romney's taxes and finally hit bedrock. Today Priorities USA released a new ad that will surely rank among the ugliest and most dishonest in the history of political campaigns. Titled "Understands" the ad features Joe Soptic describing how Mitt Romney is responsible for his wife's death from lung cancer. It's Lyndon Johnson's made more personal and therefore even more vile."

Too bad it's all false. Only a crazy Liberal would blame Romney for this guy's wife's death.

"CNN spoke to Joe Soptic, and found out that when he lost his GST job, his wife still was working and carried her own health insurance, which she then lost in 2002 or 2003 when an injury forced her to leave the job. She passed away in 2006."

^ It's Chicago-style campaigning, Boonie. Lies, lies, unsubstantiated accusations, character assassination...anything to keep folks' attention off the economy. Erm, didn't obama say his would be a one-term prez if unemployment didn't fall below 8%? It's been OVER 8% for 42 months now...

The right shifts from it's relentless campaign to make the debate about ideology, religion and nationality to one about issues only when they sense they are turning voters off with their looney personal smears.

in this economic romney should be far ahead, but he's not--he's behind in nearly all the states that matter.

candidate romney looks good on paper, but voters simply don't like romney the man.

we're still a long way out, but there's a nearly palpable sense of desperation emanating from the romney campaign and establishment republicans. they can feel it slipping away.

True, any other candidate would have got through on the 'vote for me, I'm not Obama' campaign.

Seriously, you people on the Right need to get a grip. You're all very cool with the likes of Karl Rove and his dirty tactics, 'Dr. Evil' and his fake astroturf groups, Glenn Beck etc. and their wacky conspiracy theories, Birtherism, Moslem allegations- you name it. There is no question that the downward trend in political campaigning in the modern era has been lead by the nose by the Republican party and allied interest groups.

Yet now, in the final three months before a Presidential election, you're all squealing like stuck pigs because your candidate is coming under the spotlight. I mean 'Obamabots' have been enduring worse than this (often outright lies, not mere 'exaggeration') day in, day out for at least the last four years.

Here's some cliched' advice for you pantywaists- if yer can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. And people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

    'Looney personal smears'?

Like the so-called War on Womens?
In 2011, female White House employees made about 18 percent less than their male counterparts, the Free Beacon found.

Sounds like the Democrats value women only 85% as much as they value the work and values of men, eh?

Both parties guilty as charged. Sad times for America when political campaigns devolve to slamming opponents with outright lies to convince voters not to vote for them rather than running campaigns on the merits of their candidate.

No matter who wins they will be unable to govern. After "losing" the losers will be simply continue their attacks. Result, a dysfunctional partisan government. Just what America has and certainly does not need any longer.

Please cite Obama's lies about Romney. Are you suggesting there is a balance between the two on this score? The quote above sounds a lot like the American Television/Radio press straining to be balanced.

Probably for a couple of years, especially if Obama wins again. Then the 2014 Congressional elections come along. Hopefully America be forced to get practical again, will have had it's fling with the Tea Party wing nuts and the kind of support rhetoric that fuels them and turn them out. Then we can have a functional government again.

But then, having watched Romney repeatedly step on his dick for the past month, I'm in an optimistic mood.
