It is no wonder they fail. They never seem to be set up to be convenient. The airport being too far from the city is the worst thing, IMO. I suspect the cost of flights put off most travellers between Korat and Bangkok and the limited flights between the two cities (only a few times a week and at silly times of the day) put of any regular travellers.
Got an email alert late last night just before rack ops on my credit history. So logged on and sure enough somebody had submitted a credit card application to Capitol One in my name and using my social security number. So that further delayed my beauty sleep since I had to get on the phone and call Capital One to ask them, “WTFO?” … but, thankfully I was able to let them know in time it was fraud and get it killed. Thank Buddha I didn’t just roll over and sleep on it until the morning.
My moan :
Despite my having 105 posts here under my new nic, in some sections of the forum I try to post and get the message that my post will appear only after being approved by a moderator.
Yeah, the airport is a 40 minute drive from town. Added to that, the new ventures have had a habit of cancelling partially booked flights at the last minute, so if you have an onward international flight you just can't take the risk of using them.
I think that the new high speed bullet train between Korat and Bangkok (1 hr 40 minutes promised) will be the final death knell for Korat's airport.
Oh....and related to my previous moan : I can still only send one forum private message ever 24 hours ! WTF ?
I feel for ya Mendy. Back in my Korat days I wanted to fly back to Lampang versus driving home to stay for 4 days. Flights cancelled without notice. Flights cancelled to CM or Lampang and only to BKK then have to wait for hours to fly to Lampang from Swampypooh.. Easier to drive time wise. I gave up on that entire deal. So As part of my hiring package I had a driver so that poor guy would have to drive me to Lampang and then hang out for 4 days and drive me back. I stopped that, felt bad for him. He was married with 2 kids. I preferred to just drive myself. Would leave early Friday Morning and could be home around 4pm that afternoon.
I am glad those days are behind me. Nothing is easy getting out of Korat. Traffic, Bus's, Taxi's, train's. Did them all. Some were reasonably enjoyable but after a few years I was done.
BTW, How is that Elevated toll highway? They were about 50% done when I left the company. Hopefully it has helped.
^ That elevated highway still isn't open... it seems to have been 80% complete forever.
They temporarily open up sections during New Year and Songkran etc, to help relieve the congestion but then close them again. Someone told me that the national speed limit on elevated highway sections is 80km/hr anyway, which would make it of limited use, but I have no idea i that is correct.
I'm pinning my hopes on the high speed bullet train.
Will that end up being part of the route between BKK and China?
If it hasn't already been announced, you just know what the fokers are doing.
A mate moved to Beijing a few years ago, apparently it's the same when people travel from Beijing to Shanghai.
A 4 hour bullet train city to city, or about the same time going to the airport, checking in and security and all the bullshit, waiting for your luggage, to end up outside the city you want to go to anyway. No brainer.
It's just on the edge of being commercially viable to fly such a short distance and is not the best location for access to Korat. I guess they could combine with another flight, like they did with the Bangkok -> Sakon Nakhon -> Nakon Panhom route years ago. However, I'm not sure which route they could combine, Udon is too busy, a route to CM would be viable but probably not enough interested for anyone to bother.
I only ever pass through if I drive to Bangkok, which is very rarely.
^^Couldn't you have just typed 'high speed trains - they're quicker'?
The route will be from China to Singapore obvs.
You could always enjoy the nice drive home through the lovely Khao Yai national park once you don't mind paying 400 baht + vehicle charges to drive home.
And be technically incorrect? There'd be half a page of posts and paragraphs upon prargraphs from me fans.
Bullet trains, they're more convenient than flying and take around the same time in total, if the distance isn't too long.
Quite catchy, will use it next time, cheers.
Bangkok-Korat high-speed railway on course for completion in 4 years
See if this works, from my phone.
We lived pretty much next to Harrow and just down the Lulu from AO for the last 5 years in Bkk as I simply loathe commuting.
For all of that time they were working on the elevated SRT that pretty much had a station right outside our place.
After years and years it finally got finished and opened up about 1 week after we moved up to CM.
What year are you retiring back to Birmingham again?
Jew-ly noted sir.
This thread seems to have changed from 'Daily Moan' to 'Daily and Weekly Cheer', because surely anything that aids a quick getaway from Korat is a good thing?
Oh, I must be careful, I was reprimanded by Teakdoor member yesterday for complaining about Korat...
