I was living on Samui at the time so it's got to have been. Unless it's a different case, i doubt it is, but you never know.

The way Thai doctors dish out antibiotics like sweets, I wouldn't be surprised if many of these bugs are resistant to them as well.

Millions come here as tourists each year, how many die? With a million people, some are going to die anyways. She just hit the lottery. She should have stayed home and watched the tele on her sofa smoking her cigarettes and downing her beer.

Nobody dies from walking through infected water, assuming of course they possess the necessary precondition of being covered with Skin.
If water borne infection was the cause, she has either allowed some to enter her mouth, or it has entered her body via a break in her skin. In both cases, it was preventable.

Or she could have ingested it. All she had to do was take her shoes off and maybe later wipe her mouth without washing her hands.

"Unable to keep food down" implies it was ingested.

Washing your hands frequently (and properly), preferably with a decent antibacterial soap or handwash, is one of the best ways to avoid catching 'flu and other bugs.

Not doing so is a great way to increase your risk of infection.

I got a small cut on finger just above the nail before taking a shower in a hotel in Korat, next day it was infected. Fought it off with repeated rinsing (hydrogen peroxide) but could never kill it off permanently until I got back to the States and started applying some antibiotic cream twice a day. Finally killed it off but took a small chunk of skin with it.

Also met a fellow who got a mysterious flesh eating ailment on his arm that sent him off to the UK for treatment and has a nasty scar to prove it.

Some nasty shit floating about in Thailand, even in the "clean" water.

Triple antibiotic ointment (Neosporin) is the best.

On the islands, RAW sewage is routinely dumped in the ocean. Swim? Take your chances... RAW sewage is routinely dumped in the street drains. (Which also drain to the ocean) It rains; the drains overflow up to your knees at times. I remember working at a major venue in Chaweng and sitting upstairs watching Tourists skipping and laughing through the black water that rose above their ankles...

Perhaps the usage of the icon was a bit over the top. It's the first time I have used one actually. Maybe it's best not to make an editorial comment with it, better to leave the reader with the choice to guffaw in the privacy of their own home...

    What a shit story

'Her mum' is my mum. I hope your mum doesnt meet her death with a 'shit story'. For the record we are disgusted at how this story has been reported, my mum had the holiday of a lifetime, unfortunately her life was cut short at 47 years old after returning from Thailand. What wasnt reported was that the coroner in fact also stated that it may have been natural causes that led to my mums death. Suppose that wouldnt make such interesting news hence why the heartless reporters have jumped on the Thailand bandwaggon, without sparing a thought to how we may feel at this surprise greeting the front page of our local newspaper days after the inquest. May i also add that my mum died this year 11th April, and not immediately after the 2004 tsunami. I could say its more than the reporters who are heartless.....

it was her hol of a lifetime. Im joannes daughter and she was so excited for this trip, she worked nearly 60 hours a week to fund it, all we take comfort in is knowing she had an amazing holiday (despite the weather) in her last days. r.i.p mum xx

Sorry about your mum Jemma and about the press. Not very nice when they get involved. The press in Thailand is 10 times worse though so at least she passed away back home.
