I was on Phi Phi at the same time, with my folks (who are in their seventies) and a couple of friends.
The conditions weather wise were atrocious on the second day there, so bad that no ferries could operate.
The storm brought with it a lot of rain, and all the low lying island centre was flooded, which did mean that it was necessary to paddle through shit to get anywhere. The infrastructure is just not there to deal with the redevelopement of the place, and my observation is that it is a fucking shithole.
The view from the top floor of the hotel my folks stayed in was very revealing. In the middle of the market area was stockpiled a lot of debris from when the tsunami hit seven years ago, used as salvage to build lean to accomodation for the workers.
A very unpleasant little spot, and one i will never visit again, although i was informed by staff of the many diveshops that the diving was excellent - all diving was cancelled, and i got the first ferry out of there.
15 or so ( 20 ? ) years ago there was an air crash into the Florida everglades and survivors contracted a nasty little anaerobic bacteria. ( cannot survive in oxygen, like tetanus ) The only way to kill it was with increased pressure forced oxygen in a hyperbolic chamber. They were fortunate to have been in S. Florida where there are probably more of these chambers than anywhere else in the world.
Didn't the woman who runs Soi Dogs in Phuket lose a limb after rescuing a dog in a swamp?
^ there was also the case two or so years ago of the Thai TV actor (?) Singer (?) who drove his car into one of the klongs and picked up some bug that eventually killed him...
..some nasty stuff around.
I was living on Samui at the time so it's got to have been. Unless it's a different case, i doubt it is, but you never know.
actually

The way Thai doctors dish out antibiotics like sweets, I wouldn't be surprised if many of these bugs are resistant to them as well.
Millions come here as tourists each year, how many die? With a million people, some are going to die anyways. She just hit the lottery. She should have stayed home and watched the tele on her sofa smoking her cigarettes and downing her beer.
Nobody dies from walking through infected water, assuming of course they possess the necessary precondition of being covered with Skin.
If water borne infection was the cause, she has either allowed some to enter her mouth, or it has entered her body via a break in her skin. In both cases, it was preventable.
Or she could have ingested it. All she had to do was take her shoes off and maybe later wipe her mouth without washing her hands.
"Unable to keep food down" implies it was ingested.
Washing your hands frequently (and properly), preferably with a decent antibacterial soap or handwash, is one of the best ways to avoid catching 'flu and other bugs.
Not doing so is a great way to increase your risk of infection.
I got a small cut on finger just above the nail before taking a shower in a hotel in Korat, next day it was infected. Fought it off with repeated rinsing (hydrogen peroxide) but could never kill it off permanently until I got back to the States and started applying some antibiotic cream twice a day. Finally killed it off but took a small chunk of skin with it.
Also met a fellow who got a mysterious flesh eating ailment on his arm that sent him off to the UK for treatment and has a nasty scar to prove it.
Some nasty shit floating about in Thailand, even in the "clean" water.

On the islands, RAW sewage is routinely dumped in the ocean. Swim? Take your chances... RAW sewage is routinely dumped in the street drains. (Which also drain to the ocean) It rains; the drains overflow up to your knees at times. I remember working at a major venue in Chaweng and sitting upstairs watching Tourists skipping and laughing through the black water that rose above their ankles...![]()
Why are you affecting to guffaw at such a sight?
Are you a pig?
