Nobody dies from walking through infected water, assuming of course they possess the necessary precondition of being covered with Skin.
If water borne infection was the cause, she has either allowed some to enter her mouth, or it has entered her body via a break in her skin. In both cases, it was preventable.

1st they say the water was 6 inches deep, then they say she walked through the water after grazing her knee. Either the water was deeper than 6 inches, or she was on a lilo and get infected water into her graze.
