Hey, don't sell yourself short. You're among fellow addicts who know what it's like (well except Dr. Andy). To not have a cigarette until after work IS a tough feet and it IS something to be proud of. Just imagine all the tar, smoke and other crap you haven't put into your lungs by waiting. Good work.

Some very encouraging comments on here, thanks guys, you rock.

I'm over the difficult stage now. Next step after a week or so will be some light training to get my lungs and heart working again.

    ^^ agreed encouragement will help.

Storekeeper, you have yourself do you want to stop or do you want to keep smoking until your lungs finally have enough and you die a horrible death gasping for breath, wracked with pain and your insides being eaten away. I think it's an easy choice

I think many people rationalize and think if they smoke they'll have a quick death so it won't matter. So in order to keep off the smokes, I think it's important for people to constantly remind themselves of the health realities. For instance, having a stroke (as a smoker friend of mine did) is not pleasant and can screw up the last 10 or 20 years of your life. Bladder cancer and impotence don't sound appealing.

    Diseases caused by long-term smoking

A lifetime smoker is at high risk of developing a range of potentially lethal diseases, including:
    • Cancer of the lung, mouth, nose, voice box, tongue, nasal sinus, oesophagus, throat, pancreas, bone marrow (myeloid leukaemia), kidney, cervix, ovary, ureter, liver, bladder, bowel and stomach
    • Lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema
    • Coronary artery disease, heart disease, heart attack and stroke
    • Ulcers of the digestive system
    • Osteoporosis and hip fracture
    • Poor blood circulation in feet and hands, which can lead to pain and, in severe cases, gangrene and amputation.
Read that ? Now read this: Health effects of tobacco - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    There's something missing,......the cough.

I went into town for a tipple and a chat yesterday and a bloke on the next table was smoking a nice cigar,...it smelt good too.

Didn't want to smoke one, nor did I think ,"Yargh, peugch..Fwk dat!" etc.

    I felt really good.

I can see Pseudo is turning into the worst kind of afflicted smoker, the reformed bore. Note how he refers to himself as Ex-Smoker not Non smoker.
Have you ever asked someone for a light and they turn around and say "I don't smoke anymore"

No I'm not - I am pointing out that the rasping in breath as you struggle to lift your arm due to the weight of the lighter is a polite reminder of how bad it is to smoke.

You put that video up thinking it would make the recent Non Smokers (if you prefer) jealous and want to smoke; after all, you recorded it yourself, uploaded it to youtube and then posted it on here for comedic affect. However, the death rattle in your lungs and the wheezing just from drawing in your first plume of smoke made me think "thank fuck I have given that up".

If you are too week and too scared to stop smoking, then fine; it's your funeral. But this thread is about people who want to / have quit smoking. Your video just helps us all see how shit it is to smoke when you actually wheeze and are short of breath from the effort of reaching for a smoke.

Glad I am not dying for a smoke any more though.

    Thanks for that, Koojo.

I was a confirmed smoker for just over 50 years. Now I don't smoke any more and have no desire to. The trigger moments are all fading away.

I have been told that the third month after quitting can be a trial for some.

Moonraker mentioned a depressive phase at that time after using Champix (contains lobeline), so he gave the stuff up then and felt OK.

Champix is a recommended 12 week course.

I hit a strange negative mood yesterday. It could have been as a result of reducing my lobelia intake, (I now only take a tiny 1 sq. cm piece of leaf on average once a day).

I haven't taken any lobelia today, but If the negative mood arises again, I'll either increase or decrease my lobelia dose slightly, depending how I feel, or just go for a walk, see how it goes.

    It's now after the end of my eighth week of quitting,..day # 58;
Right now I'm enjoying a cup of good strong coffee, no "trigger effect" for a cig at all.

well, that is the most correct term

an ex-smoker will always have the mental addiction lurking, a non-smoker will not

Worked for me. Quit eight years ago using Carr's book. Since that time I've lent the book to a few friends that have successfully quit as well.

I still keep it around, just in case I ever get tempted again. Not many books can change your life like this one.

The saddest thing I've heard in a long time.

And here was me thinking they didn't sell tobacco products to minors anymore.

The guy can't even grow up either. Because smoking stunts your growth.

Lobelia is available in garden centres in Thailand, some in Chiangmai near Tesco Lotus.

Have a look at some of the pics I posted about it and here's another Thai reference to its Thai name etc.

    Good luck.

    PS

    Also in Japan:

    Lobelia erinus 'Riviela Rose'
    • 日本語: ロベリア
Lobelia erinus is the species I've used along with lobelia inflata.

Your Japanese friends might be able to track oit down from the above.

I must say it is great not smoking. I used to hate the morning hacking coughs where your lungs tried to kick start themselves; the chesty coughs, and phlegmy coughs when you're speaking, the times when you are lying down and then suddenly you cough like a demon as if your lung is trying to escape.

There really is nothing negative at all about not smoking, and it's not even that hard to stop.
