Lately he's been overheard in Mayfair..Ahhwho.

It's about the only Chinese joint around here. In fact it's soo Chinese that when I asked the young lady serving us how long she has been in America she replied " sushi 40 minute wait." Fresh off the boat. I could tell. Talk about a hot box though. Sooo sorie no pickie, crab rangoon

Honestly I was hoping for some octopus and squid testicals rather than the pollock in the red coating. Imitation crab was a big letdown as far as the dish went.

Looks good Chitty. Made some hamburger soup myself. A bit of poverty food on a cold day. The first pic is a bit blurry as it was hard to hold the damn phone still with all the steam pouring off...

^ these 3 meals look good although Chitty's chips could've done with a couple more minutes in the deep fat fryer...

Soooooo..... Apart from the overcooked steak, undercooked chips and salad to be replaced by peas and other cooked vegetables, Chitty's meal was perfect!

(Perhaps a more colourful plate would have added to the experience too... )

(Sorry, Chitty, just jesting - I'd merrily eat that plate of food.)

As an avid chip eater and photographer, I find chips always look undercooked in pics even when I've crisped them to the point of being hollow inside.

I'm not writing his steak off as being overdone. Could have been anywhere between rare and medium inside but we really needed a cannibal shot to be sure . Looks good though.

Here we go again. Soup is still warm if you want to grab a bowl.

    ^ snubs ... you've taught me something.

I've never heard of 'hamburger soup' before.

I can understand it, just never seen it.

    Origins/Roots?

    'Merican.
Did you really have to ask or were you just extending a rhetorical nicety, Dave?

    Hamburger Soup and Snubs.
    Fits nicely.

Not sure of the origin. My mom used to make it and she learned it from my grandmother. The line was broken for me as I had no clue so I went to the old googler then just decided to say fook ti and improvised. About as simple as it gets mate any punter here can do it.

1/2 kilo mince? That's what you call hamburger right?

So take said mince dice an onion, add a couple chopped celery spears and some garlic. Cook it off in the soup pot and then drain the fat.

Then I added a can of diced tomatoes, a small can of tomato sauce, beef stock, water and from there it is whatever veg you want to chuck in mate (potatoes are mandatory though ). Really that simple.

    I added...

    3 peeled tatters
    2 peeled carrots
    Some diced green pepper
A half bag of frozen pea's for Mendip
Oh and spices, salt and pepper, Italian seasoning, Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce.
I can't remember what else it is late now and I am on the piss.

Simmered (not boiled big difference) it on the stove for an hour or so until the taters and carrots are soft.

That's it. Even Dilly could do it.

Then simmer until the tatters are soft.

I'd hazard a guess at the potato famine, sounds similar to Irish stew.

A trip to IKEA today with the perfect opportunity to try Swedish meatballs with Swedish gravy.

I submitted to Teakdoor peer pressure and opted for peas and a glass of mixed fruit cider in honour of Mendips Xmas thread.

The peas were outstanding but unfortunately the cider really isn't my cup of tea so i went and got ...a cup of tea.

15 meatballs for a fiver, the money shot...
    Dinner-20191230_154858-jpg

It's really hard to get out of an IKEA without buying something.

Just spent the last three hours assembling a flat pack wardrobe that was reduced in the sales.

The meatballs were damn reasonable, still full from 7 hours ago

One of the dishes I grew up on was hamburger soup....cheap and easy to make.

I've not thought of it in decades, snubs. Thanks.

Must admit I had to go and look it up as well.

Problem is, for Brits at least is that "hamburger" strictly applies to a beef patty (that goes inside a burger). Prior to that we call it "mince" - for more confusion, we do not call it "mincemeat" as that is a mixture of dried fruit.

AO those do look good. I've never understood the idea of putting those extra sauces with the ribs, I always think they should stand on their own merit but i suppose they have to cater for Thais who seem to lather Ketchup or that awful sugary chili sauce on their KFCs. When everything is so brash and loud these days it nice to see shy chips.
