And the WMD's?

Whatever the arguements from the left, or, the right, the undeniable fact is that up to now, the invasion of Iraq has been an unmitigated disaster for both the USA and the UK.
If they knew at the beginning, what they know now, they would never have invaded.
i'm going to assume that you're not being deliberately disingenous with the first part of your post. IF there were AQ camps in iraq, every study that has researched this has found that it wasn't with saddam's approval. to imply that AQ had approval from saddam is simply wrong.Originally Posted by Boon Mee
and as far as the second part, i've never heard anything about saddam hussein harboring osama's son. asking boonie to post a link is pointless, but has anyone else heard or read anything about this? needless to say, this is very hard to believe.
Bush was determined to invade Iraq before becoming president. Colin Powell, as secretary of defense, stated that before we went to war you must be assured of four things; 1: set an attainable goal, 2: make sure the force is more than adequate, 3: ensure united public support and 4: have a clear exit strategy. His advice at the time was that since the fourth critical factor was not at all clear that the war should not be waged. It is why Bush senior did not take the last step in "the gulf war" and take Baghdad. What would we put in place that would be viable? Bush junior had no knowledge of middle eastern history or the religious dynamics of the area. I'm sure he never really cared to learn. He just wanted to go into the middle east and kick some ass. He had no interest in listening to Powell. All he wanted to know was "can we go in and take out the government?". The military said "of course we can, but...". A president doesn't need to be from the military or have had any real military experience. He does, however, need to heed their advice even when it goes against his ego.

Well, they were there - ask all those Kurds who got to know that fact with great distress. Unfortunately, there was so much opposition to going in there before we did due to Russia, France, UN etc due to all the 'sweetheart' deals going on we missed 'em. Got shipped over to Syria...![]()

i'm not sure this board was even operating in late 2002 early 2003, but remember how hans blix was vilified by the likes of boon mee? now all they can do is post frowning emoticons.
and by the way boonie (and anyone else, for that matter)....how about a link that backs up the claim that saddam harbored osama's son.
I wouldn't assume anything with Boon Mee, if I were you. It's spelled "disingenuous", btw, just looked it up, the pedantic German i am...Originally Posted by raycarey

Has it learned anything since?
"While the world’s attention has been focused on Baghdad’s slide into sectarian warfare, something remarkable has been happening in Ramadi, a city of 400,000 inhabitants that al-Qaeda and its Iraqi allies have controlled since mid-2004 and would like to make the capital of their cherished Islamic caliphate. A power struggle has erupted: al-Qaeda’s reign of terror is being challenged. Sheikh Sittar and many of his fellow tribal leaders have cast their lot with the once-reviled US military. They are persuading hundreds of their followers to sign up for the previously defunct Iraqi police. American troops are moving into a city that was, until recently, a virtual no-go area. A battle is raging for the allegiance of Ramadi’s battered and terrified citizens and the outcome could have far-reaching consequences. Ramadi has been the insurgency’s stronghold for the past two years. It is the conduit for weapons and foreign fighters arriving from Syria and Saudi Arabia. To reclaim it would deal a severe blow to the insurgency throughout the Sunni triangle and counter mounting criticism of the war back in America."

I don't know, did Osama send a memo to the DoD to declare it their new capital ?Originally Posted by Storekeeper
Is that so ? Didn't you say you believe we need like 200,000 more troops in Iraq ?
I guess you'll be changing your mind since General Abizaid sez he doesn't need anymore troops in Iraq.
By the way ... if you don't mind, could you refresh my memory on your military background ? I ask because I forgot my buddy Keeshou served in the Air Force.
Why not just advocate that all Americans should display more of a volunteer spirit and not dictate what avenue they take ? What kind of volunteer work are you doing in Thailand ray ? Working for TEFLer peanuts doesn't count.
Good one, I can agree with this.Originally Posted by Storekeeper
When is your boat leaving to Iraq, you'll have plenty of time to devote soon, no?
Now this was worded in an acceptable manner as far as I'm concerned. Nice to see you're getting better at the written portion of the English language. keep at it and soon you'll be much better at total comprehension.
Now, I've got well over a 1000 day of shipboard time in the Persian Gulf onboard naval vessels ... I've done way more than my share supporting the great nation of America.
I have absolutely no reason to support (cheer) for the brave mean and women over the right now fighting for democracy. Fighting to give the Iraqi people a chance at the same type of freedom enjoyed by many people all over the world.
You need to just get over your guilt for shirking your duties. I think you've been forgiven by now.
