Good points. I really don't know much about either. Looking at the swing states, if the Republicans can pull even a relatively small portion of Latino vote from Obama it could make the difference. To get the swing they must appeal to the middle as they must do to win with any other ethnic group. To do this however will lose Romney some support from the Republican "base". Romney is already considered too moderate for Tea Party and religious conservatives so selecting a moderate Latino VP is the way to go. No matter who he picks, the right will cast a vote for Romney simply because they are obsessed with getting rid of Obama.

Way too early for predictions but if Republican strategy doesn't have an element of eating into Obama's lead in minority votes, they will lose. Romney gets the popular majority and Obama wins electoral vote.

What the republicans were doing last week.

And with tradition I’ll start with the GOPs continued War on Women.

Republican Rep. Todd Akin, who is running for Senate in Missouri, on Wednesday said that emergency contraceptive pills should be outlawed.

“As far as I’m concerned, the morning-after pill is a form of abortion,” he told KCMO’s Greg Knapp, “and I think we shouldn’t have abortion in this country.”

Akin suggested there should be no exceptions for rape or incest. : Rep. Todd Akin: Morning-after pills should be banned

One train of thought will lead to trouble,…….

But when, in 2009, the Department of Homeland Security reported that white supremacy is the US’s biggest threat for domestic terror, it was met with harsh criticism. Conservatives blasted the department for defining terror threats too broadly, instead of focusing on potential Islamic terrorists. Then-House Minority Leader Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) was one of those who berated DHS, saying that they weren’t focusing on the real threats the US faces.

    Snip

"DHS stopped all of our work and instituted restrictive policies," said Johnson, who has since left the department. "Eventually, they ended up gutting my unit. All of this happened within six to nine months after the furor over the report. Since our report was leaked, DHS has not released a single report of its own on this topic. He also made headlines for grabbing his fellow state Supreme Court justice by the neck during a deliberation, with the entire Court present.

The state judicial commission filed an ethics complaint against him over this, which would be decided by his fellow justices. But all of the justices were present at the attack, and Prosser came up with an idea. What if he got all four of the conservative justices on the Court to simply recuse themselves from deciding on the complaint, because they witnessed the event personally? Maybe democracy is on its way out if the Republicans have their way. A Republican senate candidate in Arizona, Jeff (appropriately named) Flake, is calling to end the direct election of state senators. This position is, apparently, favored by the tea party.

    GOP Wednesday update

And we’ll start off again with the GOPs War on Women and that crazy Akin.

Senate Candidate and Rep. Todd (I’m stayin’ in the race) Akin (R-MO) told a local television station on Sunday that “legitimate rape” rarely produces pregnancy because “the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” Akin cited conversations with unnamed doctors for the bizarre claim.

Akin sponsored legislation that would redefine rape in federal law to limit funding for abortion providers and has a long track record of uninformed and extreme views about women’s health. : Rep. Todd Akin: Victims Of 'Legitimate Rape' Won't Become Pregnant

More on this crazy rethug Akin.

Rep. Todd Akin, the GOP’s candidate for U.S. Senate in Missouri, suggested in an interview that it was time to “look at or overturn” the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Asked directly if seminal federal civil rights legislation that prohibits discriminatory voting procedures needed to be modified or scrapped, Akin said that states — not the federal government — should set voting rules. According to Akin, elections “have historically always been a state thing” and that’s a “good principle.” : Akin Suggests The Voting Rights Act Of 1965 Should Be Overturned

    GOPs War on Women, continued.

A state law requiring women to receive an ultrasound at least a day before having an abortion has already caused a Northern Virginia health clinic to reduce its non-abortion services in the month since it took effect, according to a clinic official.

Virginia legislators passed House Bill 462 during the 2012 General Assembly. It states that a woman seeking an abortion must receive an abdominal ultrasound and then wait at least 24 hours before terminating her pregnancy. It also requires doctors to offer the woman the opportunity to see the ultrasound image and hear the fetal heart tones. : Clinic says ultrasound law for abortions forces it to reduce other health services

Even more on the War on Women and an Akin supporter, Iowa’s Steve King.

(Republican) King supports the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act." It would ban Federal funding of abortions except in cases of forcible rape. Right now, Medicaid also covers abortions for victims of statutory rape or incest - for example, a 12 year old who gets pregnant.

Congressman King says he's not aware of any young victims like that. : Rep. Steve King on the Campaign Trail - KMEG 14 - News, Weather, Sports for Sioux City and Siouxland

And another Republican supporter for Akin.

GOP 4th Senate District Committeewoman Sharon Barnes told The New York Times “that abortion is never an option.”

    Snip

Barnes “echoed Mr. Akin’s statement that very few rapes resulted in pregnancy,” according to the Times, and she added that “at that point, if God has chosen to bless this person with a life, you don’t kill it.” : Missouri Republican official: ‘God chose to bless’ women with pregnancies from rape

    GOP skinny dipping with kids.

The FBI has investigated an incident that saw at least one Republican congressman swim naked at a drinking party in Israel last year attended by top leadership staff, Politico reported.

The news website said Representative Kevin Yoder of Kansas stripped and jumped into the Sea of Galilee during the privately-funded trip, joining colleagues and their family members who were partially or fully clothed. : FBI investigates Republican Congressmen’s drunken, naked escapades in Israel

Sexual assault and a GOP activist.

Political activist Greg Peterson was charged Monday with sexually assaulting yet another woman at his Utah cabin where he hosted events for some of the biggest names in Republican politics there.

Prosecutors in Wasatch County, Utah charged Peterson, 37, with forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony, for a 2010 incident involving a woman he brought back to the cabin, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

Meanwhile, Peterson was scheduled on Tuesday morning to appear in court in Salt Lake City for the start of a two-day preliminary hearing, where a judge will determine if there is enough evidence to move forward in a case involving four other women who have accused him of sexually assaulting them since March 2011. : Utah GOP activist Greg Peterson hit with another sex assault charge

    O’Keefe can be sued.

A federal judge refused to throw out claims that a right-wing activist violated the privacy of an ACORN worker who was taped counseling defendant James O'Keefe, who sought advice on how to fill his house with underage prostitutes.

Juan Carlos Vera sued O'Keefe and his associate Hanna Giles in Federal Court on privacy claims, after O'Keefe secretly filmed Vera at an ACORN office in National City in 2009.

The now-famous series of ACORN recordings featured O'Keefe posing as pimp, dressed in a chinchilla coat, while Giles was disguised as a prostitute. : Courthouse News Service

    Pretending

Danny Tarkanian, a Republican House candidate in Nevada, accused his Democratic opponent, Steven Horsford, of pretending to be black and taking the African-American community for granted. Horsford is the state’s first black Senate majority leader.

Guess which one is the Republican: Nevada Republican Accuses Black Dem Of Pretending To Be Black

A Republican judge in Pennsylvania and voter suppression.

In Pennsylvania, a Commonwealth Court judge has rejected a suit brought by the ACLU, the NAACP and others to block the state’s stringent new voter ID law, according to the Philadelphia Enquirer‘s website Philly.com. Judge Robert E. Simpson, elected to the bench as a Republican in 2001, rejected the plaintiffs’ request for an injunction against the law, which would potentially disenfranchise 758,000 poor and minority voters. : Republican judge blocks rights groups’ suit over Pennsylvania voter ID law

More on voter suppression in Pennsylvania.

On the same day a judge cleared the way for the state's new voter identification law to take effect, the Corbett administration abandoned plans to allow voters to apply online for absentee ballots for the November election and to register online to vote.
A spokesman for the Department of State said county elections officials told the agency that implementing the new online initiatives as well as voter ID requirements was too much to handle less than three months before the election. : Pa. drops plans for 2 online initiatives to boost voting - Philly.com

    GOP voter suppression in Ohio.

Two Democratic members of the Montgomery County Board of Elections have been suspended after they insisted on allowing weekend hours for in-person early voting in violation of Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted’s directive setting uniform hours across the state.

Mr. Husted has begun the process of permanently removing Thomas J. Ritchie, Sr., the board’s chairman, and Dennis Lieberman from their positions. In the meantime, he broke the board’s 2-2 tie in favor of restricting early voting hours to the weekday timetable he laid out on Wednesday. : Montgomery County elections board members suspended - Toledo Blade

Brewer and her problem with immigrants.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (R) has signed an executive order that attempts to thwart President Obama’s directive extending temporary work permits to more than a million undocumented immigrants. The Obama administration’s policy — which would grant two-year work authorizations to undocumented youth between 15 and 30 years of age who have lived in the U.S. continuously for at least five years — was announced in June and went into effect on Wednesday.

Brewer’s order directs “state agencies to deny driver’s licenses and other public benefits to young illegal immigrants who obtain work authorizations” and “directs state agencies to start emergency rulemaking processes as necessary to implement her order.” : Arizona Governor Tries To Thwart Obama's Immigration Directive With Executive Order

Brewer has a follower, in Nebraska.

Two days after Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer declared her state won’t confer driver’s licenses and other state benefits to newly-documented immigrants under Obama’s “deferred action” immigration policy, Nebraska, too, put its foot down.

Echoing Gov. Brewer, Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman (R) said on Saturday that Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program does not make successful applicants “legal citizens,” meaning they remain ineligible for state benefits like driver’s licenses and other services. : Obama

Ya say you want a (GOP Armed) REVOLUTION.

In the “Whitehouse Watchdog” column, editor Ponch McPhee says that America cannot survive four more years under Obama, a “political socialist ideologue” who is “unlike anything world history has ever witnessed or recognized.” McPhee argues that Americans will have no option “but armed revolution should we fail with the power of the vote in November. : GOP Newsletter Calls for Armed Revolution if Obama Re-Elected | rightwingwatch.org

Oh my, Thugs are losing their minds already. Another call to treason- this time by an elected Republican official: Republican judge in Texas warns of ‘civil war’ if Obama reelected | The Raw Story
A Republican judge in Lubbock, Texas told a reporter on Tuesday that he and other officials are making plans for the possibility of “civil war” if President Barack Obama is reelected, warning that should the president cede control of the country to the United Nations, he’d prevent troops from entering the county.

“He’s going to try to hand over the sovereignty of the United States to the U.N., and what is going to happen when that happens?” Lubbock County Judge Tom Head (pictured, left) asked a reporter for a local Fox News affiliate during an interview that was supposedly about county business.

“I’m thinking the worst,” he deadpanned. “Civil unrest, civil disobedience, civil war maybe. And we’re not just talking a few riots here and demonstrations, we’re talking Lexington, Concord, take up arms and get rid of the guy. Now what’s going to happen if we do that? If the public decides to do that? He’s going to send in U.N. troops.”

Head concluded: “I don’t want ‘em in Lubbock County, okay? So I’m going to stand in front of their armored personnel carrier and say ‘you’re not coming in here.’ And the sheriff, I’ve already asked him. I said, ‘You gonna back me?’ He said, ‘Yeah, I’ll back you.’ Well, I don’t want a bunch of rookies back there. I want trained, equipped, seasoned veteran officers to back me.”

^the reason he thought it was necessary to raise taxes

Lubbock County Judge Tom Head and Commissioner Mark Heinrich went into great detail Monday night on FOX 34 News @ Nine about why it is necessary to raise the tax rate by 1.7 cents the next fiscal year.

An across-the-board pay increase is needed for the attorneys on the DA's staff to keep them from being poached by higher-paying counties, and the sheriff needs to expand his staff by seven deputies to reduce call response times, minimize officer fatigue and reduce the turnaround time for investigations.

Judge Head said he and the county must be prepared for many contingencies, one that he particularly fears, is if President Obama is reelected.

^Amazing the number of paranoid fantasies these crazy right wingers indulge in. Obama is going to bring in UN troops to put down a violent 'Lexington-Concord' style insurrection by the right. All of this is inspired by the NRA's campaign to characterize Obama as having a secret agenda to disarm gun owners despite the fact that he has shown absolutely zero interest in changing gun ownership laws. Jesus wept is right.

Given the UN military track record I suspect the Texas Rangers and local sheriffs and po-lice, not to mention all the whacky militias, wouldn't have too much trouble with the blue helmets. The Texas National Guard probably wouldn't be too pleased about the UN showing up either. Wolverines!

It's been a rough week for the GOP. They've had to defend Romney's attempts to hide his tax returns while at the same time accusing Obama of not being honest with his background. Now they've had to defend rape.

If I were them, I'd be feeling a bit frazzled as well.

The continued GOP War on Women,……

Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan says that he personally believes that rape is just another “method of conception” and not an excuse to allow abortions.

    Snip

“In this case, when Ryan says ‘the method of conception’ is irrelevant, he’s talking about rape,” Benen wrote. “In other words, the Republicans’ vice presidential nominee clearly believes the government should force women to take their pregnancy to term if they are impregnated by a rapist.”: Ryan on abortion exceptions: Rape is just another ‘method of conception’

“The future of our party is to reach out consistently to have a tone that is open and hospitable to people who share values,’’ he said, adding “the conservative cause would be the governing philosophy as far as the eye could see … and that’s doable if we just stop acting stupid.” TAMPA: Jeb Bush: Republicans need to stop acting stupid in courting Hispanics - Florida - MiamiHerald.com

Minor distractions. Republicans Arrive United: It's All About the Economy - stupid. And the scariest thing is, Ryan is right and Obama hasn't got a let to stand on. Jobs & the deficit are foremost on the folks minds. "Every American’s share of the national debt has increased by approximately $16,000 during the current administration."

Erm, the plot was hatched last year, no? He was a page in 2008. Bit disingenuous there, Miss Kitt. Want to peruse the list of terrorists to invited the obama's WH?

As for Landreth's lengthy post ^^, yep, them liberal decoder rings are out in full force these days, conveniently providing a left-wing interpretation of any GOP comment. The funniest was the libbie translation of Chick-fil-A's chief's "I believe in traditional marriage" as "ANTI-GAY!!!!"
Pfft. Attacking the GOP for letting blacks drown while they have their convention; meanwhile, obama is campaigning in swing states -- oh, but he's only the president.

The National Debt when Obama took the oath on Jan 20, 2009 was $10.4 Trillion

Obama has done bad by adding to it, but this is largely a GOP and government as a whole doing.

    Just a few things,……

    GOP voter surpression.

Ohio Secretary of State Fires Two Democrats for Pushing Weekend Early Voting

    COLUMBUS —
Secretary of State Jon Husted fired the two Democrats on the Montgomery County Board of Elections on Tuesday for rejecting his statewide early voting schedule, raising the stakes in a white-knuckle standoff between Republicans and Democrats over voting hours.

Husted, a Republican, dismissed Thomas Ritchie, Sr., and Dennis Lieberman in a letter Tuesday, saying they willfully violated state election law. Ritchie and Lieberman had voted to add weekend voting hours to those in Husted’s directive and refused to rescind their action as Husted’s office requested.: Husted fires Mont. Negrohood is not a word in spell check

Brooklyn-based NY Assembly candidate: ‘Negrohood’ just ‘a typo’

A Brooklyn-based primary candidate running for the New York State Assembly claims that a mailer that was sent out by his campaign calling one area a “negrohood” was an unintentional typo. The New York Daily News reports that Bill Akselrod, who is running against Democratic Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz, apologized yesterday, taking “full responsibility” for what he said was an “inadvertent error.”: Brooklyn primary candidate in N.Y. A big F U from the court to Texas about voter suppression

The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. ruled Thursday (PDF) that a controversial voter ID law in Texas would disenfranchise poor people and blocked the state from implementing it, where the law’s likely to stay unless the Supreme Court overturns the decision.

Attorneys for the Department of Justice argued that the state’s Republican Party was engaged in a systemic attempt to shrug off the coming effects of changing demographics in Texas, where census figures show Hispanics are responsible for two-thirds of the new population growth.: Federal court blocks Texas voter ID law

KKKarl Rove being funny. Let’s murder someone

On the final morning of the Republican National Convention, Karl Rove took the stage at the Tampa Club to provide an exclusive breakfast briefing to about 70 of the Republican Party’s highest-earning and most powerful donors. During the more than hour-long session, Rove explained to an audience dotted with hedge fund billionaires and investors—including John Paulson and Wilbur Ross—how his super PAC, American Crossroads, will persuade undecided voters in crucial swing states to vote against Barack Obama. He also detailed plans for Senate and House races, and joked, “We should sink Todd Akin. If he’s found mysteriously murdered, don’t look for my whereabouts!”: Exclusive: Inside Karl Rove's Billionaire Fundraiser - Businessweek

An update on the GOPs War on Women

GOP Senate Candidate Supports Life Sentences For Rape Victims Who Obtain Abortions

Rep. Rick Berg (R-ND), the candidate for Senate from North Dakota, once voted for a bill that would have made any woman who obtained an abortion guilty of a homicide crime — even if it were in the case of rape or incest. Indeed, the bill Berg supported does not even contain an explicit exception if an abortion is necessary to save the woman’s life.: GOP Senate Candidate Supports Life Sentences For Rape Victims Who Obtain Abortions

And the GOPs continued Voter Suppression effort

Ohio’s Secretary of State, Jon Husted (R), will not set new early voting hours despite a court order, according to a memo released by his office.

“Announcing new hours before the court case reaches final resolution will only serve to confuse voters,” the memo states. “Therefore, there is no valid reason for my office or the county boards of elections to set hours for in-person absentee voting the last three days before the election at this time.”

The memo prohibits county election boards from setting hours for the Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday before the election.: Ohio Secretary of State refuses to restore early voting pending appeal

Santorum gets it right, for once

Speaking Saturday at the Values Voters Summit, Rick Santorum said that “smart people” would never side with conservatives.

Santorum also claimed “the media” and “colleges and universities” would not be “on our side” because “they want to tell you what to do.”

Rather, according to Santorum, the conservative movement will be supported by “the church and the family.”

^ Yes Ricky- but the Republican party most certainly used to.

I know US elections are overwhelmingly conducted on domestic issue's, but how about this for a slam from Australia's Treasurer?

Treasurer Wayne Swan says ‘‘cranks and crazies’’ in the US Republican Party are threatening economic growth as Congress remains deadlocked on tax increases and spending cuts set to take effect in January.

‘‘Let’s be blunt and acknowledge the biggest threat to the world’s biggest economy are the cranks and crazies that have taken over the Republican Party,’’ Mr Swan said in a speech in Sydney today. ‘‘Global markets are nervously watching the positioning of hardline elements of the Republican Party for signs that they will dangerously block reasonable attempts at compromise.’’

US lawmakers are deadlocked over how to resolve the so-called fiscal cliff, the combination of more than $US600 billion in automatic tax increases and spending cuts that will go into effect next year if Congress does nothing.

Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke has said the issue is one of the main sources of risk for the US economy.

Cranks and crazies- a nice way to be depicted by a senior government figure in one of your closest allies. Then again the chairman of the Fed is saying something similar, albeit considerably more discretely. And 'smart people will never support us'. I wonder why?

Who says the GOP doesn't have a sense of humor?

Massive Manure Pile Delivered to Ohio Democratic Offices

Democratic volunteers in southwest Ohio on Tuesday were shocked to find the entrance to their headquarters blocked by a massive pile of horse manure, according to a local report.
Warren County Democratic chair Beth Goldenfield told WKRC Cincinnati that her staff was sickened by the prank, which they think occurred sometime after 10 p.m. on Monday.
Goldenfield suspected a few local GOP elephants were behind the nasty dung attack.
