Dollar Dinged by Trump Tariffs, Suffers Worst 3-Day Decline Since 2022
The dollar is suffering through its worst two-day drop since 2022 after President Donald Trump initiated tariffs on Mexico and Canada, the opposite of what was “supposed” to happen. Worse still, its “safe-haven” status might also be fading.
The U.S. has enjoyed a luxury no other country has. Everyone uses the dollar to conduct trade internationally, which has made the greenback in demand through thick and thin, even as the federal government has run up a massive amount of debt. Trump’s tariffs and his apparent breach with Europe on military matters could threaten that status.
The first sign that all isn’t right comes from the market’s response to the initiation of tariffs. For many, potential levies were considered a negotiating tactic—until they weren’t. But the idea of tariffs was considered dollar-positive—and that is just what the greenback did before they were initiated. The ICE U.S. Dollar index

The dollar’s drop on Tuesday coincided with a sharp decline in U.S. equity markets—the S&P 500

Is the White House trying to engineer a recession? This Wall Street pro explains the vision. - MarketWatch
On a selfish note, I will need to convert some JPY to USD later this year and a weak dollar will be looking mighty good when that day comes.![]()
If the pundits are right then the dollar could slide downwards. After decades of citing other countries as 'currency manipulators' it seems like Trump might give it a go himself.
My cash is in dollars, so I am not too thrilled. I got out of Sterling before Brexit and wa feeling smug. No longer.
Mr. Xi might be smiling quietly, another small step on the road to his making the Yuan a reserve currency.
I'm going to assume the stupid orange turd isn't smart enough to engineer a recession or to have any kind of vision as to how that would help things long term.
I would assume that causing a massive downturn in stocks is a great opportunity to make a great deal of money shorting however.
The obvious thing the orange turd and his idiot followers don't seem to realise is that, in order to compete with Asia in the manufacture of anything that requires manpower, you have to accept something like working 72+hour weeks for less than minimum wage.
This is why there has been such a decline in US manufacturing and a negative trade balance all these years, and they're too dumb to realise it.
The next post may be brought to you by my little bitch Spamdreth
It is possible that Trump had literally never heard of Lesotho. I think it is more likely that he had 'hardly ever heard about it' and was overstating his ignorance for comedic effect. Even if he had literally never heard of it I submit that his statement was still humorous, since one usually does not advertise one's own ignorance of other countries' existences when one is POTUS.
I think unwillingness to concede that Trump is genuinely funny is a problem. To defeat your enemy you have to know your enemy.
Looper, the haters on here are just like the wrinkled sour faced democrats in the audience. They cannot or will not admit that some of Trumps policies are actually good for his country. Love him or hate him, his speech was a masterclass, and he used humour to put the haters firmly in their place.
Of course he exaggerates and uses hyperbole for effect, he is a politician. His comments on lesotho and government wastage were spot on. Why should the USA spend millions on health care in lesotho. Its government is mired in corruption and has been for years.
I suspect over 4 billion people haven't heard of Lesotho or can't recall having heard of it.
the point trump was making was not whether anyone has heard of lesotho or not, but that most americans couldnt give a flying fuck about lesotho and would rather their tax dollars were spent improving the lives if americans in the usa and not foreigners is lesotho or some other bongo bongo land.
Trump represents the worst of human nature, greed, pride arrogance which we expect from dictators and those unelected, pure Darwinism.
It hardly matters to the planet if small impotent nations have poor leaders bar their own citizens .
However for the super power to side with Putin, Hungary,Slovakia and outright abusers is a tragedy for all anathema to civilized behaviour where concern for our environment and neighbour are valued.
Let us hope USA can deliver a better POTUS in 28, Vance looks like more of the same.
Russia went from being 2nd strongest army in the world to being the 2nd strongest in Ukraine

Trump to deport Ukrainian refugees
US president proposes fast-tracking the removal of 240,000 people displaced by conflict as soon as April, sources claim
Ukrainians who fled to the US after Russia’s invasion are facing deportation under new plans by Donald Trump to revoke their legal status.
The US president is proposing to fast-track the removal of 240,000 Ukrainians displaced by the conflict as soon as April, sources have claimed.
The move would be an extraordinary reversal of the welcome Ukrainians received under Joe Biden, the former president, amid the Trump administration’s rapidly fraying support towards Kyiv.
The planned rollback of protections for Ukrainians was underway before Mr Trump’s ugly row with Voldymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office last week, a senior Trump official and three sources familiar with the matter have said.
It is part of a broader Trump administration effort to strip legal status from more than 1.8 million migrants allowed to enter the US under temporary humanitarian parole programs launched under the Biden administration, the sources said.

It also follows the White House cutting off all US military aid and suspending intelligence-sharing to the war-torn country as it tries to force Kyiv to the negotiating table.
A Trump executive order issued on Jan 20 called for the Department of Homeland Security to “terminate all categorical parole programs”.
Under US immigration law, “parole” is granted to certain non-citizens to allow them to enter or temporarily remain in the US for various reasons.
However, the Trump administration plans to revoke parole for about 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans as soon as this month, sources have claimed.
Migrants stripped of their parole status could face fast-track deportation proceedings, according to an internal ICE email.
The Biden programmes were part of a broader effort to create temporary legal pathways to deter illegal immigration and provide humanitarian relief.
These programs also included more than 70,000 Afghans fleeing the Taliban takeover, including allies to American troops.
During his campaign, Mr Trump pledged to end the Biden programmes, saying they went beyond the bounds of US law.
The Trump administration last month paused processing immigration-related applications for people who entered the US under certain Biden parole programs.
Tricia McLaughlin, a Homeland Security spokesman, said the department had no announcements at this time.
The White House later denied the report.
“The truth: no decision has been made at this time,” Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said, calling it “fake news”.
The Ukrainian embassy did not respond to a request for comment.

^ On the positive side, the fighting age men and women amongst them will be able to join the Ukrainian military and help fight off the Russians.
Is Trump going to sell weapons or provide intelligence to Russia? He's desperate to stop this war.
You're the sort of trumpanzee idiot that ignores that rampant destruction of institutions that are normally associated with power grabs by the corrupt, and bleats "Awwwwww look at the little kid with cancer!" when they stick him on the screen.
Meanwhile the same orange turd is slashing cancer research because he thinks there are "transgender mice".
All this is proving is that there is still an enormous amount of stupid people in America, including the one in the WH.
^seems they mixed up "transgender" with "transgenic".
...and these people run the country.
Democracy is a messy process everywhere and the US version has long puzzled me. Not enough to try to understand it. Why the Democrats seem so impotent is a bit of a puzzle to the layman, like me.
That it can so quickly descend into an autocracy seems to be a surprise to most people. This is the underlying reason why the rest of the world will rethink its relationship with the US and will be very slow to trust the country ever again.
Time to dig out Plato's Republic. I am pretty sure that he identified autocracy as the next step in the cycle after democracy. Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.
One group is thriving on all this: the media. Everywhere you look, people with lots to say, mostly in shrieky voices.
There are mechanisms in the US constitition to deal with a rogue POTUS by they rely on the House and the Senate both of which are controlled by the Republicans, herin lies a key weakness in the constitution
