A member of the press??? Hardly, it was Marjorie Taylor Greenes boyfriend pretending to be a reporter and was no doubt concocted with Trump and Vance to be part of the ambush.

It looked to me more like a hugely unfortunate diplomatic fiasco, with mistakes made on both sides, rather than a planned ambush.

Trump had his own reality TV show, he cares about TV ratings for every thing he does. He even said at the end of the meeting it would make for great TV.

My take, for what it's worth is that JD Vance started the fiasco. Zalensky pulled him up on it, Vance escalated it and Trump tried to defend his VP.

Embarrassing for the USA rather than Zalensky, more so because Europe is backing the latter.

Trump is just too naive to understand the Russian/Ukraine conflict and has made himself look the fool everyone knows he is.

Of course he was ambushed, he was only invited to get intimidated, bullied.

Most European comments that I've seen are of the opposite opinion. This clip from LBC is just one of many from European political commentators expressing the same.

He was invited to sign the deal that would have give the USA access to minerals and a good reason to protect their investment. It is in fact part of a pragmatic solution to ending this conflict. Unfortunately it will mean Ukraine losing both territory and face to Putin. Otherwise this conflict could go on for years. Putin couldnt care less how many men he loses, and neither could N. Korea. Europe are in no position to keep stumping up for years, and nobody is prepared to directly engage Putin. Pragmaticism and diplomacy is the only way to end this, but sadly whatever agreement is reached Putin will appear to have come off best.

The press conference was a disaster for all, except Putin. Team Trump was to blame but the jet lagged Zelensky should have swallowed his pride and not taken the bait, but I suspect knowing what is at stake, it will blow over. Arses will be kissed, apologies offered and hands will be shaked. The oily Starmer will attempt to take some credit and Macron and the Krauts will stop shitting their pants.

I don't see this as a planned ambush. It does not seem to be in anybody's interests to have this fiasco erupt and sully the dignity of the Oval Office.

It seems much more likely that JD relative inexperience has seen him censure Zelensky for 'disresepcting' the office, not giving leeway for Zelensky's language barrier.

Trump is an emotional animal who then jumped when Z started getting into it with JD.

I think it is unlikely that the US administration at any level would 'plan' this mutually embarrassing press pantomime.

Essentially, yes, but I would say through inexperience, rather than with the intention of creating the scene that erupted.

Not even Putins? Whose side Trump has clearly taken in this war.

Dignity of a government institution? Pfftt..... Did you forget about Jan. 6th? And how he pardoned them all.

It is unprecedented to have the press present during negotiations. they are carried out between closed doors and then the parties come out to meet the press and give a brief statement of the results, a statement they have agreed about no matter how much in disagreement they were in the negotiations. This was a planned humiliation of Zelenskyy

Here is another pearl from LBC

The cost of war is peanuts compared to the cost of refugees we have to deal with now.

What we see unfolding before our eyes is Yalta 2 where the big 3 carve up who gets to control the entire world.

Trump, Putin and Xi are the big 3 and, like it or not, the world is in for a major global power realignment.

How Zelensky'''s lack of a suit may have fuelled Oval Office spat

I am surprised they are running an article on it.

Trumps initial joke at the front door seemed good-natured.

The 'reporter' seemed more aggressive and rude, but Trumps subsequent interjection was good-natured and conciliatory.

I don't think anybody really sees anything wrong with Zelensky dressing in fatigues as an adopted style when his country is in the midst of a brutal war. Seems like a sideshow distraction of an issue.

what was not in putins plan was this theatre planned to make trump look strong that was derailed because trump was primed with all his stupid cliches by his advisors and Zelensky who was not happy at having to come to fawn and give away some of the countries future wealth became irritated at the insults .

Zelensky had come to sign the deal - putins useful idiots have fcuked it up and now western europe is hardening the fcuk up which is not the outcome that was desired

The hypocrisy of MAGA is astounding. They attack the president of a war-torn country for wearing military fatigues, but have no problem with Elon strutting around the Oval Office in his clown costume.

"Let this sink in... The president of a war-torn Ukraine, a US ally, has become the first leader in history to be thrown out of the White House. Not a dictator, not a disgraced politician - the president of Ukraine, a country suffering the worst invasion of the 21st century. The country to which the US government vowed to bring peace. In an ugly exchange, the president and his vice president jointly rebuked Zelensky for being 'not grateful' enough for aid to Ukraine. But it seems that gratitude to the American people is not what Trump and Vance were after. They wanted him to beg for mercy and fall to his knees before Trump. Kiss the ring,"

Editorial: A president just disrespected America in the Oval Office. It wasn’t Zelensky
