I don't say so and Viborg is the swedish name. Viipuri in Finland. Vyborg in Russia

Stymied but not yet dissuaded from the possibility of action, the Allies formulated a final plan on 29 January. First, the Finns would make a formal request for assistance. Then, the Allies would ask Norway and Sweden for permission to move the "volunteers" across their territory. Finally, to protect the supply line from German actions, the Allies would send units ashore at Namsos, Bergen, and Trondheim. The operation would have required 100,000 British and 35,000 French soldiers with naval and air support. The supply convoys would sail on 12 March and the landings would begin on 20 March.[239] The end of the war on 13 March cancelled Franco-British plans to send troops to Finland through Northern Scandinavia.[240]
Do you have some connection to Vyborg since mentioning it ?

It was russian for more than 200 years until the ca 22-24 year finnish stint.

Have a look into the Finn- Soviet negociations leading up to the Winter War, which was a disaster for both countries and edged some postcard painter on to war against SU.

If seen as a cardgame, there are paralel lines to the Ukraine pre- invasion situation.

    Both very bad played

I understand that you have the rose tinted glasses on, when we talk Finland.

(or is it simply a matter of Russo Demonization?)

Sadly there wasn't much rosy about it.

I understand the David against Goliat aspect of things, being an Under Dog Supporter myself, but....

The number of Soviet prisoners of war in Finland was estimated by Finnish historians to be around 64,000, 56,000 of whom were captured in 1941.[20] Around 2,600 to 2,800 Soviet prisoners of war were rendered to Germany in exchange for roughly 2,200 Finnic prisoners of war.[215] Of the Soviet prisoners, at least 18,318 were documented to have died in Finnish prisoner of war camps.[216]
1,200 prisoners were shot, "most" of whom illegally
Finnish military administration and concentration camps[edit]

Soviet women having breakfast next to burning trash at a Finnish concentration camp in Petrozavodsk.Main articles: Finnish military administration in Eastern Karelia and East Karelian concentration camps
On 19 July 1941, the Finns created a military administration in occupied East Karelia with the goal of preparing the region for eventual incorporation into Finland.
    The Finns aimed to
expel the Russian portion of the local population (constituting to about a half), who were deemed "non-national",[160] from the area once the war was over,[161] and replace them with the local Finnic peoples, such as Karelians, Finns, Ingrians and Vepsians.

Most of the East Karelian population had already been evacuated before the Finnish forces arrived, but about 85,000 people — mostly elderly, women and children — were left behind, less than half of whom were Karelians. A significant number of civilians, almost 30 per cent of the remaining Russians, were interned in concentration camps.
    [160]

The winter between 1941 and 1942 was particularly harsh for the Finnish urban population due to poor harvests and a shortage of agricultural labourers.[160]

However, conditions were much worse for Russians in Finnish concentration camps.

More than 3,500 people died, mostly from
starvation, amounting to 13.8 per cent of those detained, while the corresponding figure for the free population of the occupied territories was 2.6 per cent, and 1.4 per cent for Finland
    You mentioned ethnic cleansing ?

With that in mind, the Finns should praise themselves lucky, that they weren't occupied and their borders more or less restored to what they were in 41.

Now..before you start ridiculing the numbers in this post, do bear in mind, that Finland is kind of a Nordic Brother Country to us, it's not Uganda, China or Russia with all the atrocities that has been going on there. It's family and it matters which luggage they are carrying around

The US has secretly sent long-range missiles to Ukraine

    OF

    Karen Nielsen

Earlier this month, Ukraine secretly received a series of long-range ATAMSC missiles from the United States.

Garron Yarn, spokesman for the US Department of Defense, the Pentagon, told US media CNN.

The missiles were delivered as part of the March arms package delivered to Ukraine earlier this month.

"It was not announced at the time that we are giving Ukraine this new opportunity. Ukraine asked for this to ensure their operational security," Garn told CNN.

Smart move by Biden given the big bill was in the middle of a goat rope pull in the house.
ATAMSC not super long range but with 150+ mile range can strike targets in Russia.
Wonder if the US has imposed restrictions on hitting targets inside Russia? Likely they have.

Ukraine's foreign minister on lack of air defense: 'A tragedy unfolding before our eyes'

    OF
    House Lærke Maach

The West is losing the battle to have the most efficient defence industry because Russia has already developed one, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said.

He once again sends an appeal to Western countries to send equipment to the war-torn country. This is done in an interview with Latvian television.

In particular, Ukraine's lack of air defences is costing lives, he said.

"This is a tragedy unfolding before our eyes, because if we had the necessary air defense systems, we could have saved both lives and our economy from destruction," he said.

Those who delay decisions to supply Ukraine with Patriot missiles will be responsible for the next death and destruction in the country, the foreign minister said.

Corruption case in Ukraine: Resigning minister demanded arrested

    OF

    Line Jenvall

A Ukrainian court has issued an arrest warrant for the country's agriculture minister, Mykola Solskyj.

It writes the news agency Reuters.

Mykola Solskyj is accused in a corruption case of illegal acquisition of state-owned land, and although he denies all the charges, he announced yesterday that he will resign from his ministerial post.

However, he will remain in office until a replacement has been appointed.

The land acquisition, worth almost DKK 50 million, must have taken place in the period between 2017 and 2021, i.e. before Mykola Solskyj took office as Minister of Agriculture at the beginning of 2022.

    Russia's industrial production stagnates

    OF
    Karen Nielsen

There are problems for the Russian economy.

A think tank with close ties to the Russian government writes in a report that Russia's industrial production is stagnating, that it is increasingly difficult to export industrial products, and that there is a decline in the ability to make money in most industries. It writes Reuters.

The think tank, called The Center for Macroeconomic Analysis and Short-Term Forecasting, also warns that there is a shortage of imported components and raw materials.

The think tank says that already at the end of last year and at the beginning of this year there were signs of the deteriorating situation of the Russian economy.

Will dump this here for 2 reasons:
    1.

What will happen to this russian Thinktank ?

    2.

Is it indeed a russian "Thinktank" ?

Just curious and I reckon time will tell

Ukrainian troops are falling back in several places along the front in eastern Ukraine
    OF
    Tobias Leth Klinge

At least three places along the front line in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian soldiers have had to move back.

This is due to a "deteriorating" military situation, Ukraine's defense chief, Oleksandr Syrskyy, wrote on the social media site Telegram.

The focal point of the fighting is close to Chasiv Jar and northwest of Avdijivka, which Russian forces captured in February.

As a result, Ukrainian soldiers have had to take up new positions west of the villages of Berdychi and Semenivka.

    - In general, the enemy achieved some tactical successes in these areas, but could not gain operational advantages. The Ukrainian forces inflict maximum losses on the enemy, both in personnel and materiel.

    - In addition, the enemy continues the attack on the village of Terni on the Lyman front, trying to push the Ukrainian defense forces across the Zjerebets River, but without success.

He also writes that the situation in southern Ukraine is tense, but here the Ukrainians have managed to advance on the Kherson front.

Stoltenberg: NATO has failed to deliver on its promises

    OF

    August Olaf Jersild

NATO countries have failed to deliver on their promises of military assistance to Ukraine in recent months.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said after an unannounced visit to Ukraine with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

However, the Secretary-General promises that the amount of ammunition and weapons will now increase. It writes Reuters.

The United States took six months to agree on an aid package, and European allies have not delivered the ammunition we promised. But now I'm sure things will change," he says.

Last week, US President Joe Biden approved a 61 billion aid package for Ukraine, and Germany has pledged to deliver a new air defense system to Ukraine.

It appears that the Russian President Putin

Putin inaugurated for fifth term as Russian president

"The ceremony was held in Moscow amid a tense geopolitical situation and diplomatic rift with the West.

Vladimir Putin’s fifth term as president of Russia has begun, following his inauguration in Moscow on Tuesday.

The ceremony was held at the Grand Kremlin Palace, after the 71-year-old leader took a short car ride to the location from his workplace. The current protocol was first used in 1996, when Boris Yeltsin assumed his second term in office.

The oath to serve the nation and its people is taken while placing one hand on a special copy of the constitution used during inaugurations. The document used on Tuesday was updated to reflect amendments adopted in 2020 and the inclusion of four former Ukrainian regions which voted in referendums in 2022 to join Russia.

Lawmakers from both chambers of the nation’s parliament and justices of the Constitutional Court were present. Following the oath, Chief Justice Valery Zorkin confirmed Putin’s fifth presidency, which will last for six years.

Putin’s previous inaugurations took place in 2000, 2004, 2012, and 2018. This year stands out, as a number of Western nations and the EU chose to boycott the event. Their governments claim that this year’s presidential election in Russia, which Putin won with a record 87.28% of the vote, was not free and fair.

Russia’s relations with the West are at one of their worst points in history. Moscow has accused the US and its allies of waging a proxy war against Russia. Sanctions, diplomatic pressure, and supplies of military aid to Ukraine are meant to contain Russia’s development, its leadership has said. The West claims it is reacting to “unprovoked aggression” by Putin and his government."

Unlike the ex Ukraine leader who no longer has any official status, due to not being reelected, as required under Ukraine law.

West has a decision to make – Putin

Russia remains open to dialogue and it is up to the other side to decide how to move forward, the president has said

It is up to the West to decide if it wants to engage in dialogue with Russia or pursue endless aggression in an attempt to hamper the country’s development, President Vladimir Putin said during his inauguration speech on Tuesday.

Putin’s address came after he was officially sworn in for a fifth term as Russian leader. The ceremony took place at the Kremlin Grand Palace and was attended by dozens of dignitaries, including senior officials from parliament and the constitutional court.

Commenting on the future of Russia and its relations with other nations, Putin stressed that “we do not refuse dialogue with Western states. The choice is theirs: do they intend to continue trying to restrain the development of Russia, continue the policy of aggression and relentless pressure that they have pursued for years, or look for a path to cooperation and peace.”

READ MORE: Message to the West: What’s behind Russia’s tactical nuclear drills
This cooperation must include discussions on issues of security and strategic stability, according to the Russian president. However, any talks must be carried out with mutual respect on equal terms, and without “arrogance, conceit, and personal exclusivity,” Putin insisted.

“Together with our partners in Eurasian integration and other sovereign development centers, we will continue to work to form a multipolar world order and an equal and indivisible security system,” Putin said. At the same time, Russia will strive to remain self-sufficient and competitive, he added.

Putin also stressed the importance of remembering “the tragic price of internal turmoil and upheaval.” In order to ensure its unity and independence, Russia’s statehood and socio-political system must be flexible and resistant to any challenges and threats, the president insisted.

The president also said society has changed in recent years, and has begun to value “reliability, mutual responsibility, sincerity, decency, nobility and courage.”

Putin went on to promise to use his powers as head of state to ensure that all Russian citizens who have proven their loyalty and have shown “their best human and professional qualities” are given leading positions in public administration, the economy, and other spheres."
