Starving, Freezing, Getting Shot At By Their Own Regiment—No Wonder These Russian Draftees Surrendered

The 92nd Mechanized Brigade is one of the best and, for the Russians, most dangerous formations in the Ukrainian army. So you can’t blame the gaggle of under-trained, under-equipped and badly led Russian draftees for surrendering the first chance they got when the 92nd and other Ukrainian brigades attacked them near Svatove in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region on Nov. 7.

The surrender could be a sign of things to come as Ukraine’s eastern counteroffensive barrels into its third month, and the Russian army shoves more unready draftees to the front in a desperate—and so far failing—bid to slow the Ukrainians.

It doesn’t appear the deepening winter is going to help the Russians, either.

A video that circulated online on Sunday depicts at least 21 middle-age Russian draftees—presumably some of the roughly 300,000 men the Kremlin forced into military service starting in September—after they surrendered on the previous Monday. “The command is giving up,” one draftee says, his hands bound. Their officers “threw them out to the slaughter.”

The draftee describes dire conditions for the Russian regiments—reportedly including the 346th Motorized Rifle Regiment—occupying Svatove, a town with a prewar population of 16,000 that abuts the P66 highway, which itself threads through the forest and fields to Severodonetsk, one of the bigger cities in Donbas.

The Ukrainians held Severodonetsk until July. Liberating the city is a top priority in Kyiv. Approaching the city from the north means going past Svatove. It’s not for no reason the Ukrainian eastern command has assigned the 92nd Mechanized Brigade to that sector. If any formation can get the job done, it’s the 92nd.

The 92nd Mechanized Brigade, originally billeted just south of Kharkiv, is one of the best-trained and best-equipped units in Ukraine’s active army. The brigade boasts two T-64 tank battalions and three battalions of infantry in new BTR-4 wheeled fighting vehicles plus attached artillery, engineers, air defenders and support troops. Each battalion fields around 40 armored vehicles and 400 troops.

The 92nd and its sister unit, the 93rd Mechanized Brigade, were at the vanguard when the Ukrainian army launched its eastern counteroffensive in early September. The 93rd has held off repeated attacks by Russian mercenaries near the town of Bakhmut. The 92nd meanwhile is closing in on Svatove.

That the 92nd Mechanized Brigade has maintained its forward momentum is a chilling sign for the Russians. Ukrainian winters usually are wet and muddy before getting cold and icy. Historically, the mud slows military operations, so there was reason for Russian planners to hope for a respite from the Ukrainian assault.

But if the 92nd is worried about cold mud, it sure hasn’t shown it. Russian draftees, on the other hand, are miserable. “We didn’t eat or drink for three days,” a surrendering draftee says in the video from Sunday. “We lived in trenches, wet.”

Worse, the draftees, who reportedly had just 11 days of training, were getting shot at by their own regiment. “We shoot at our own guys, they shoot at us.” Friendly fire points to a breakdown in leadership and discipline—ominous developments for a regiment facing one of the best brigades in the Ukrainian army.

A Ukrainian army that doesn’t look like it’s going to take the traditional winter pause—and give the Russians any time at all to rest and reset their depleted regiments, and maybe train all those bewildered draftees.
Just to set the table a bit. Svatove is a transportation hub in northern Luhansk. One of the last ones the Russians have up north, and if they lose it they will be forced to retreat, most likely out of northern Luhansk oblast entirely. This is a big one, boys and girls. Watch for it.

You really do persist in making a fool of yourself. You posted propaganda from the Kremlin and got called out on it. Everyone here so far is laughing at you.

This is a perfect example of Dunning-Kruger syndrome.

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, November 14
    Nov 14, 2022 - Press ISW

The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) escalated claims of Russian territorial gains in Donetsk Oblast on November 13 and 14, likely to emphasize that Russian forces are intensifying operations in Donetsk Oblast following withdrawal from the right bank of Kherson Oblast. The Russian MoD claimed that Russian forces completed the capture of Mayorsk (20km south of Bakhmut) on November 13 and of Pavlivka (45km southwest of Donetsk City) on November 14 after several weeks of not making claims of Russian territorial gains. As ISW assessed on November 13, Russian forces will likely recommit troops to Donetsk Oblast after leaving the right bank of Kherson Oblast, which will likely lead to an intensification of operations around Bakhmut, Donetsk City, and in western Donetsk Oblast. Russian forces will likely make gains in these areas in the coming days and weeks, but these gains are unlikely to be operationally significant. The Russian MoD is likely making more concrete territorial claims in order to set information conditions to frame Russian successes in Donetsk Oblast and detract from discontent regarding losses in Kherson Oblast.

It is a Kremlin mouthpiece, you utter imbecile.

Writing in 2019, the European Union's East StratCom Task Force analyzed site meta-data and reported, "South Front is registered in Russia, money donated to the site goes to Russia and the editor is named Anastasia. But the most compelling evidence for South Front’s being Russian is in the content...South Front is loyally relaying whatever suits the Kremlin, pretending not to be Russian."[1] Two days after that report appeared, SouthFront anonymized their videos, removing Russian text that had listed the name of their video editor as "Natasha."[7] The second report also cited WHOIS information for southfront.org, showing the domain was registered on April 30, 2015, with Russian registrar REG.RU.
n 2017, researchers at Oxford University's Internet Institute studied the collaboration of SouthFront with two US-based sites, Veterans Today and its sister site Veterans News Now.[9] Veterans Today is "a fake news site actively pushing the Kremlin party line," according to University of Washington professor Kate Starbird.[10] Philip N. Howard, one of the paper's coauthors, told McClatchy DC the three websites underlay "an entire ecosystem of junk news about national security issues that is deliberately crafted for U.S. veterans and active military personnel...a complex blend of content with a Russian view of the world – wild rumors and conspiracies."[11] The Oxford researchers concluded that the three sites were more successful on Twitter than on Facebook, saying "on Twitter there are significant and persistent interactions between current and former military personnel and a broad network of Russia-focused accounts, conspiracy theory focused accounts, and European right-wing accounts."
n April 2020, Facebook and Twitter deleted many pages and accounts they said were linked to "Coordinated Inauthentic Behavior" by Russian actors, mentioning South Front as having "pushed misleading articles, questioning the results of the 2020 presidential election and the efficacy of Covid-19 vaccines."[12]
n February 2022, Meta (formerly Facebook, Inc.) took action against both SouthFront and NewsFront, for a new round of deceptive activity.[12] The Facebook report said that a network of fake accounts claiming to be people from Kyiv amplified content from "websites masquerading as independent news outlets, publishing claims about the West betraying Ukraine and Ukraine being a failed state."[15]
Complete trash and only a blinkered useful idiot would think otherwise.

You mean, like Wapo is a Washington mouthpiece? Well knock me down with a feather. Is only Washington allowed a mouth, in this Brave New World of yours?

I'm afraid quite a few of us refuse to kneel before that Diktat.

After the recent retreat of the Russian military in the Kherson region, the Armed Forces of Ukraine continued occupying the new settlements and secure their positions on the western bank along the Dnieper River and near the city of Kherson. Top Ukrainian military commanders and foreign journalists came to the city in order to cover the situation inside the city. The media continue to ignore the Ukrainian nazism and atrocities against the civilians. They are glorifying Ukrainian servicemen and activists who hunt for the alleged Russian collaborators in the recently taken settlements, as a result, innocent civilians are tortured without any trial.

Busy fighting the civilians, the Ukrainian military reportedly attempted new offensive operations in the region which however are not aimed at any military gains but are yet another media campaign. On November 11, a Ukrainian sabotage group reportedly attempted to carry out a landing operation near the village of Pokrovka located on the Kinburn spit. As a result of the failed operation, the Ukrainian grouping of the 73rd Gomorsk Center of Special Operations was destroyed. 4 Ukrainian small vessels and about 20 servicemen were reportedly destroyed. The reports of the military operations on the spit are yet to be officially confirmed.

This is the salient point here. There is no strategic value to Bakhmut at all and the line in Donetsk hardly moves the same as it has been since 2014. The Russians are absolutely atrocious at fighting war. They are pouring troops into a meat grinder making them fight uphill into a heavily fortified city that is Bakhmut. They are never going to succeed in taking it.

    Do not forget Svatove.

The elephant in the room here. If Svatove is liberated by Ukraine, then Severodonetsk is basically flanked from the north, it is just another step closer to flanking Luhansk city proper.

I have no idea where the Rusians/ Ukrainians are advancing/ retreating until after the event. Neither do you. We just read reports, which are a lot more important to you than I. Aspects like the 35% plunge in Ukrainian GDP (at minimum), the fact that much of the country has no electricity, that it's population has dropped from some 40mm to 28mm, and that Europe is facing a severe recession, and who is paying for this debacle are frankly far more my forte'.

But I like to drop in a bit of pro-Russian war porn here and there just to send the shits up you. Still reckon Russia will be kicked out of Ukraine by Xmas?

We did. That's why we gave them massive amounts of food, rail cars, tanks and other equipment via lend lease. The Russians utilized the same tactics in that war that they are using now. Push conscripts to the front at the force of a gun and use them as a meat grinder. Same ole rock and roll.

    Patton was right...

We should have smashed them before they got nukes.

An unwelcome development, Poland is of course Nato. Explanations will of course be required, probable reparation too. I assume it was a stray missile, but the potential for this war escalating is a worry.
