Ukrainian Jewish Oligarch Igor Kolomoisky Steps Aside, For Now - Tablet Magazine

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko accepted the resignation of Igor Kolomoisky from the governorship of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast late Tuesday night. The resignation concluded a weeklong confrontation between the state and Ukraine’s most flamboyant oligarch. It was likewise a reassertion of the state’s monopoly on armed force after Kolomoisky had occupied government buildings in Kiev with his private militia.

Kolomoisky had lavishly funded the right-wing Right Sector battalion and at one point flirted with the ultra-nationalist Svoboda party, and was even rumored to be involved with the neo-Nazi Azov battalion—making an Israeli citizen perhaps the primary purveyor of the ultra right wing in Ukraine. He sparked a national debate about the ‘feudalization’ rather than federalization of the country with his aligning of volunteer military battalions, widely considered to be out of control. Many of these have since been or are in the process of being folded under the authority of the interior ministry. This week the critics who long warned that Kolomoisky’s private army and allied militias would be invoked in a classic warlord power play in the middle of Kiev were proven correct.


Until last week, the law on public companies required a quorum of 60 percent for annual shareholders’ meetings. This meant that a minority shareholder like Kolomoisky, who owned 42 percent of Ukrnafta, the largest gas and oil extracting company in Ukraine, could block shareholders’ meetings from taking place simply by not showing up.

While Naftogaz is a state-owned owned company, it isn’t a state entity. This provision was adopted for all public companies last week. Oleksandr Lazorko, the CEO of Ukrtransnafta and a Kolomoisky ally, was soon ousted. In response to his de facto control being challenged, Kolomoisky brought in masked, heavily armed men to occupy the state oil company offices in the center of Kiev. The company’s new government-appointed CEO was barred from entering the building by Kolomoisky’s private security contractors.

And who does he blame ? What Ukranians blame for everything. The Russians. Even though they had nothing to do with this.

Kolomoisky loyalists insisted the newly appointed CEO represents a rival Oligarchic grouping, but the point is moot. Kolomoisky appeared at the offices personally claiming, in front of cameras, that he was there to protect the ‘private companies from raiders and Russian saboteurs.’ He then proceeded to construct an iron fence around the Ukrnafta building.

Germany intercepts Russian talk of indiscriminate killings in Ukraine

BERLIN — Germany’s foreign intelligence service claims to have intercepted radio communications in which Russian soldiers discuss carrying out indiscriminate killings in Ukraine.


In two separate communications, Russian soldiers described questioning Ukrainian soldiers as well as civilians and then shooting them, according to an intelligence official familiar with the findings who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the matter’s sensitivity.


The findings, first reported by the German magazine Der Spiegel and confirmed by three people briefed on the information, further undermine Russia’s denials of involvement in the carnage. Russia has claimed variously that atrocities are being carried out only after its soldiers leave occupied areas or that scenes of massacres of civilians are “staged.”

Images from Bucha, a suburb of the Ukrainian capital, have become symbols of the war’s atrocities and galvanized calls for probes into possible war crimes. One person said the radio messages are likely to provide greater insight into suspected atrocities in other towns north of Kyiv that had been held by Russian soldiers.

Germany has satellite images that point to Russia’s involvement in the killing of civilians in Bucha, the intelligence official said, but the radio transmissions have not been linked to that location. The foreign intelligence agency, known as the BND, may be able to match signals intelligence with videos and satellite images to make connections to specific killings, two people said.


These people also said the radio traffic suggests that members of the Wagner Group, the private military unit with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and his allies, have played a role in attacks on civilians. Another person briefed on the intelligence said the Wagner Group or another private contractor could be involved.

I got no idea what they were doing ringing Kiev in the first place. Perhaps they thought the gov't would just fall? Well if so, that was pretty naive. I find it hard to believe that they were planning to storm the capitol- they had nowhere near the military force required.

Anyway, whatever ones opinion about the cassus belli, the war belongs in the east/ south, and only there- except (obviously) military/ logistic targets.
