The Venice Commission

An EU advisory body, with absolutely no jurisdiction over Ukraine, Crimean Republic or Russia (actually, as an advisory body, it has no jurisdiction as best I'm aware- it can only give opinions). They can whistle dixie all they want, but it's relevance and authority can be compared to Iraq trying to take the US before the International Criminal Court over war crimes- but the USA is not a member of the ICC or signatory to it. Whistlin' sweet dixie.

Absolutely no qualms quoting David Stockman- apart from holding a highly influential position in the Reagan admin, he went on to a highly successful Wall St career. More pertinently, in these crazed times, he is one of the few who has a grip on the actual Ukrainian situation- and is not scared or intimidated to come out and say it. Guess he doesn't need your money or patronage, uncle sam. I'll say one thing though- his view of how Ukraine should be partitioned is considerably more severe than my own.

The Venice Commission declared that the referendum was illegal under both Ukrainian and Crimean Constitutions, and violated international standards and norms.

You are suggesting an EU official, asking an EU entity, to provide its opinion, on whether a foreign country's actions are compatible with EU practises, are a matter applicable to foreign countries and is regarded as a lawful conclusion.

Possibly inside the EU, of which Ukraine was and remains outside, elsewhere in the world it may not have been and is not within their jurisdiction legally.

I. Introduction

1. By letter dated 7 March 2014 the Secretary General of the Council of Europe,
Mr Jagland, asked the Venice Commission to provide an opinion on “whether the decision taken by the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea in Ukraine to organise a referendum on becoming a constituent territory of the Russian Federation or restoring Crimea’s 1992 Constitution is compatible with constitutional principles”.

2. Mr Paczolay, Ms Suchocka, Mr Tanchev and Mr Tuori were appointed as rapporteurs for this opinion.

3. The present opinion was adopted by the Venice Commission at its 98th Plenary session in

Venice on 21 March 2014."

28. Moreover, circumstances in Crimea did not allow the holding of a referendum in line with European democratic standards. Any referendum on the status of a territory should havebeen preceded by serious negotiations among all stakeholders. Such negotiations did not take place.

A recap of the situation in Ukraine

Now that daylight has broken in Ukraine, let's go over what we're expecting to hear more about today:

• Mariupol evacuations — A Red Cross aid convoy will be heading to Mariupol to again try to evacuate civilians after being denied access to the city yesterday
• Russia's repositioning of troops — We've seen pictures of utter devastation in places like Bucha and Irpin on the outskirts of Kyiv after Russian forces pulled back from those regions. But even though it looks like troops have long gone — having left some of their dead and burnt-out tanks in their wake — locals have been told to stay well away in case of further attacks. They've also been warned to watch out for landmines
• Attacks in Ukraine's east — In his nightly national address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that while troops were "slowly" but "noticeably" pulling back in the north, he was very much braced for attacks in the east, particularly around the city of Kharkiv and in the Donbas region. He said the situation was still "extremely difficult" there
• The Russian oil depot fire — The facility is located in Belgorod, about 35km from the Ukrainian border. A fire there prompted evacuations locally, with Russia saying it was the result of a Ukrainian attack. Russia said two Ukrainian choppers flew over the border and struck the facility. Ukraine's Security Council Secretary Oleksiy Danilov denied this

Yesterday, the EU told China not to allow Russia to work around Western sanctions imposed over its invasion of Ukraine.
Today, a Chinese diplomat said China was not deliberately circumventing sanctions on Russia.
Wang Lutong, the director-general of European affairs at China's foreign ministry, told reporters that China is contributing to the global economy by conducting normal trade with Russia. Fucking chinks

Mostly contrived. There was a famine, in part to do with commi policy. But the idea that the famine was going full bore on the west Ukranian part of the country and everything was fine and dendy in the Russophone part of Ukraine is simply untrue. The east Ukranians suffered just as much from the famine as the west Ukraine partisans.
