Love him or hate him ... I actually like helge.

He'd be a welcome guest at my table (as long as he bought the first round )

We don't agree on everything, but it would be fun discussing our differences over a few pints.

My lineage is German (and Scottish) ... when I walk onto a Lufthansa flight, the stewardesses automatically speak German to me, just, I assume, from my looks.

If you are offering up a decent Kraut Wheat Beer ... I'm there also.

As an aside ... I've spent a fair bit of time in Ukraine. Not really counted as living there, but enough to get to know the people well enough.

I had a lovely Lassie who worked in Odessa, but family in Kherson ... feel for her, the safety of her Family

Another lovely Lassie in Odessa, the place I spent most of my time.
Major port city on the black sea and understand why Putin is desperate to capture it.

My first venture into Ukraine (after Kiev) was Kharkiv. Not my type of city. I kid you not, when I landed in the second largest city in Ukraine, a farm tractor pulled out a cart (as in a hay-ride cart) with our luggage on it.
NOTHING I saw endeared me to the City.

And yes, mostly Russian spoken there ... my Ukrainian phrase book was useless!

Travelled by train to Lviv ... so pretty ... could easily live there, and Odessa.

Not exactly me ... I've just travelled a lot of Europe.

The stories about my German, Finnish and Dutch GF's are a lot more fun

But that would sound like boasting and be off topic here.

    Yes seems like it

I doubt that the ukrainian resistance is running down a straight line; must be loosely commanded

I imagine it depends on what part of the country. Furthermore, I would imagine it is very organized in Odessa or around Lviv, where they have not seen much combat. But they deserve credit for such a stiff defense against a much larger foe. The fact that Kharkiv has not fallen is just amazing considering how close to the border it is.

Odessa will be the turning point for the war.
Just a shame that wonderful city will be destroyed.
1500 miles of underground tunnels to shelter in, Russia is really gonna struggle taking the city.

^^ Well, it's a start. Jaw jaw, not war war.

    A few counter proposals-

    • Ms "Fuck the EU" Nuland has her US passport rescinded in perpetuity
    • Zelensky donates the $1.3bn he has illegally stashed offshore to Ukrainian orphans
    • Members of Far Right militias are disarmed, not allowed into politics, or to donate to political parties

Russians ‘could buckle in 10 DAYS’ as Ukraine claims to have killed 13,500 troops and destroyed hundreds of tanks & jets

    Ukraine war mega thread-a8d5f838-9c0a-4b52-9f4e-2b8298df83ed-jpeg

VLADIMIR Putin could only have ten days to win the war in Ukraine before his forces buckle, defence experts have claimed.

The Russian tyrant expected a quick victory when he ordered the invasion on February 23 but his forces have encountered fierce resistance, with 150 Kremlin troops killed overnight in Mariupol.

The invasion has seen Russian pilots blasted out of the sky, tanks ambushed and videos of sobbing showing soldiers after surrendering to the Ukrainians.

Ukraine claims to have killed around 13,500 Russian troops and destroyed a large amount of equipment.

The country's President President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed overnight that "hundreds" of Russian helicopters and tanks had been destroyed in the fighting.

Among the dead are at least 12 top commanders, including three generals, with the latest killed a top spy commander.

Now both a senior UK defence source and the former commander of US forces say the game could soon be up for Russia.

“Ukraine has Russia on the run,” the source told the Daily Mail.

“It is running out of manpower and running out of energy. As long as we keep pressing they've got ten to 14 days before reaching their culminating point

“That's when the strength of Ukraine's resistance should become greater than Russia's attacking force.”

Meanwhile, retired US army General Ben Hodges has predicted Russian forces will be unable to continue their assault on Ukraine 10 days from now – if Ukraine can hold out that long.

The former commander of United States Army Europe for three years highlighted three key deficiencies holding back the Russian military.

“Russia’s decision to transition to a war of attrition – they’re smashing cities, putting civilians on the road because of fear of being murdered – they need three things to do this,” Gen Hodges told MSNBC.

“And they don’t have those three things. They don’t have the time, they don’t have the manpower, and I don’t think they have the ammunition.

"That means they won’t be able to continue the attack."

He said the West needs to "accelerate the delivery of the capabilities Ukrainians need to destroy Russian long-range artillery and rocket launchers and missile sites".

“So it’s kind of a race, actually. If we give the Ukrainians enough, where they can outlast Russia until Russia culminates, then in my assessment, unless something dramatically different happens, it’s about 10 days.”

Russian forces continue to pound Ukrainian cities from and the air and with artillery.

Moscow's forces have been making progress in the south with the defence ministry saying it now occupies the region around Kherson, the first major city to fall into Russian hands.

But in the southern city of Mariupol, the Russians lost 150 personnel as well as tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, Ukraine’s defence ministry said.

There have also been reports that some members of the Russian armed forces are refusing to follow orders.

Mariupol is seeing the worst humanitarian crisis in the country, with residents struggling to access food and key supplies, but it remains under Ukrainian control.

A series of powerful explosions rocked Kyiv early Tuesday even as talks between Ukraine and Russia were set to resume.

At least three large blasts were heard in the centre of the capital with a column of smoke rising.
