The ruzzians are actually shelling their own citizens in these border towns. You just can't make this stuff up.

The Russian rebels in the Belgorod/Bilhorod Oblast achieved with less than 500 fighters absolute chaos along the border. Hit-and-run, next target, destroy regime bases and soldiers, next target, rinse and repeat. This is exactly how a rebel army operates, until it establishes permanent bases.

On top of that, the whole episode showed how weak Russia has become. And no, only fools tell you that this is the way to defend a border. It is not. You preemptively strike at the first sign when seeing the enemy to mass troops along the border, especially in wartime.

This event forced redeployments of the Russian regime army which would have been needed along the frontlines in Ukraine. That alone is already another Russian regime defeat.

Maybe invading Georgia could've been avoided or Moldova could've been avoided or Crimea could've been avoided .There is a pattern here and that is the west was so weak on previous Russian sanctions it gave Putin free reign to further his ambitions for little consequence.
So you are right Helge. All this couldve been avoided but unfortunately it was inevitable due to the disastrously weak world leaders from Obama to Macron to Merkel which thought appeasement would work and then there's Russian people themselves, whom still dream of empire allowed them to aquiesce all of their freedoms to a tyrant, too blind or ignorant to see he was leading them down the slippery slope to war and confrontation with the west. NATO was becoming a shadow of its former self with the NATO countries that count all defunding their military all led by a perceived split in NATO much of it coming from the mouth of Trump, yet somehow this defunding and increased dependence on Russian energy was still a threat to the Russian state. Only the eastern states were not fooled by Putin they have experiences that will never be forgotten with the Russian state. This mythical belief that the Russians defeated the Nazis in the second world war only fuels the average russian peasant into thinking Russia is invincible.
Regardless of whether you are pro russian or otherwise and no matter how you rejoice at any russian victory, ignoring the death and destruction brought about by Putin, The facts are that a country that perceives itself to be a great military power unable to conquer a minnow like Ukraine means the Russians have already lost. Relying on mercenaries and a foreign legion of fighters has exposed the weakness of the Russian military from top to bottom. Their losses will mean they will be a third rate military power with nuclear weapons only. Their power, credibility and influence on the world stage has been terminally damaged for years to come and the longer it goes the deeper the sanctions will bite. Oh and you are totally wrong, this war was unavoidable. Wars are not prevented by appeasement. They are prevented by states deterring agressors through strength. Putin perceived the west and NATO as weak and divided. That was the cause no more no less.
