The reference, in this case the meter, is not the important part.
It is the decimal system used by the Egyptians 5000 years ago and since then used by almost all advanced civilisations that is important.
deci, centi, milli hekta, kilo, mega applies to weight(gram), volume(liter) and distance(meter) to name the most common ones.
