That's a howler- Iran sits astride the Strait of Hormuz, by far the worlds busiest oil shipping lane. Part of Syria borders the Mediterranean sea, which is of no particular strategic value as long as the Brit's control Gibraltar. It therefore has virtually no navy to speak of, but hosts a Russian naval base.

    A non-story.

What is a 'story' are the crowds that show up for R/R. Check out these two pictures:

ROMNEY RYAN RALLY AT RED ROCKS: Two pictures.

"Background on this: we left our home in time to get there just before five under normal conditions. About thirty miles out, the highway became a parking lot, where we got stuck for the next two hours. The freaky thing was the lines extending behind us at least as much. The highway exit was closed, but we’re conservatives/libertarians, we find ways. So we went back roads, parked in way outlaying parking lot (for another facility) and tried to walk. Only the people ahead of us were getting turned back at the door, so we all walked back to our cars shouting stuff like “Romney” and ” Soon a real president.” Look at those pictures and let me tell you, at least that many of us were turned away or prevented from approaching. Da roosterish, be not getting it, but… it looks like they’re gonna need a bigger October surprise."

    Pretty impressive wouldn't you say?

Bet Obama is kicking himself for letting that Iran / sea gaffe slide. Imagine if he'd come straight back with "Well, we're all entitled to a gaffe or two on live TV. And Governor Romney has just used up his quota. He said that Syria is Iran's route to the sea. Unless there has been some major seismic activity within the last few minutes, I think he'll find that they don't share any land borders and that Iran has a long coastline of its own. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it."
The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

^ I suspect that the reason Obama didn't call him out on it was that he also wasn't top of his class in Geography.

Heh, you don't sincerely believe Obama was on top of his class in any course of study do you?

Will be interesting to see if The Donald's offer of 5 million USD for Obama's docs bears fruit!

Serious question- do they teach you people world geography at school, ie is it a school subject? Not aiming a low blow here, but it is often noted that American knowledge of geography outside Nth America is quite thin on the ground..

Heh, I suppose if you're some Buckwheat from North Alabama you might not be too sure where the country of Lichtenstein might be on the map but yes, 'they' do teach world geography in school. The point again that's it's a big country and to some folks minds, 'who needs to travel to some ferrin' country' applies. But if you're from some little bitty dinky country that can be crossed in an hour or two by road, well, you just might be aware of some specific geography.

A very good point about Romney's amazing flip floppery- it might be to his benefit with the votes that count:-

But as Bill Clinton warned the Obama team last year, attacking Romney as a flip-flopper, as the President did on Monday in Boca Raton, can help Mitt with centrist voters who like the idea that he's actually a sheep in Wolfowitz clothing.

Obama blew the first debate because he can't stand the phoniness of jousts, and he seemed flummoxed by the mind-boggling phoniness of Romney. For the first time, we see President Cool unable to keep his feelings completely cloaked. In Boca, his dark eyes were glaring daggers at Romney, who was sporting his smarmy smile and mine-is-bigger-than-yours flag pin.

If Romney gets to the Situation Room, will we see Cipher Mitt, the vessel of the neocons? Or will we see Moderate Mitt, chastising the hawks - who are eager to pick up where they left off bombing, in Iran and Syria - with a variation on the line he used about al-Qaeda at the debate: ''We can't kill our way out of this mess''?

It's impossible to know. Romney may have made so many compromises to get the prize that he doesn't have a true self any more. And that's the scariest thought of all.

Read more: It's difficult to tell who's the real Mitt

Mind boggling phoniness indeed. The same 'information' that was once the basis of our society pulling out of the Dark Ages into the Age of Enlightenment is now being used to keep people in the dark, via non stop bombardment, spin and outright falsehood. The great unwashed are victims of this, not beneficiaries. So much for the Information Age- and so much for Romney and the GOP. We're used to politicians and their bullshit, but they have genuinely plumbed new depths. Their sums don't add up- no attempt has even been made, and I cannot think of a single discernible policy approach in their platform, except throw money at the already rich- I mean, how bad is that? GOP 2012- "vote for us because you feel bad (and our bloke ain't black)".

America deserves better than this farcical choice, it really does. The election was Obamas to lose, given the sickly economy and it's well documented effect on public sentiment. He will win though, because Romney and the current GOP are Bullshitters (nice aussie turn of phrase that)- and that is exactly how Obama describes Romney in a soon to be released Rolling Stone article. Then again, if we look at Obamas trail of broken campaign promises, well guess what- he's a Bullshitter too.

The more I read and watch about this election, the more I think the whole process is fucked. A two year election campaign and you only get to pick one of two guys? Seriously? The whole thing stinks of a set up.

The betting odds have this election a 2-1 for Romney, representing a 33% shot.

Bloody good bet if you ask me. Doesn't Mitt or his son or something own the company that supplies the rigged voting machines? And he's the underdog?

Dunno 'bout that but Mad Joe Biden's brother was just awarded a multi-billion dollar contract to build homes in the ME

"In true Arrested Development style, Vice President Joe Biden’s brother, James Biden, has received a cozy deal from Hill International, a firm that builds homes in the Middle East. James was hired as executive VP of the company in 2010. Six months later, Hill won a contract from the federal government worth some $1.5 billion to build homes in Iraq. The Iraqi government is supposed to provide the cash for the deal."

    How Coincidental Is That

Well, it looks like this Mittmentum thing is real. Romney draws 12K more folks in another rally in Ohio. Third rally in that state in 12 hours.

John Sununu, Top Romney Surrogate, Suggests Colin Powell Obama Endorsement Motivated By Race

Sununu, who served as governor of New Hampshire from 1983 to 1989, made the comment during an appearance on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight." Morgan asked Sununu whether Powell's endorsement of Obama, after having also thrown his support behind the president in 2008, meant the former four-star general should end his membership in the Republican Party.

Sununu: Well, I'm not sure how important that is. I do like the fact that Colin Powell's boss, George Herbert Walker Bush, has endorsed Mitt Romney all along. And frankly, when you take a look at Colin Powell, you have to wonder whether that's an endorsement based on issues or whether he's got a slightly different reason for preferring President Obama.

Morgan: What reason would that be?

Sununu: Well, I think when you have somebody of your own race that you're proud of being president of the United States, I applaud Colin for standing with him.

John Sununu, Top Romney Surrogate, Suggests Colin Powell Obama Endorsement Motivated By Race [UPDATE]

These people just don't get it, do they? Institutionalised denial. I personally know 3 card carrying republicans that voted for Obama last time, of which two will again this time. The other one changed his mind because he and his sibling will soon enough inherit a wedge- and he doesn't want his mothers estate to pay inheritance tax. I know more American people who are staunchly Republican though. That's some stubborn.

As for the considerable slander thrown at the US Military and Pentagon, once again the Republican party shows their flag is only on their sleeve. They still enjoy the support of many decent people, but in my opinion do not deserve it.

The more I see of the windbag, the more I agree with you. Not very bright. His dream is being a celebrity, nothing else. He craves adoration. Only.

They all have- Nixon the sole exception, but he was incapable of being adored.
In the modern age, it would be more of a miracle for Nixon to be elected than Obama.

Not an expert on US presidents. Well, that's not really true. I know next to fuckall about them, pre George.

But I've seen quite a bit of them in passing, and Obama really stands out as something special in the 'I love Me' stakes.

I tend to notice the demeanor rather than the words. I can point you to the very moment GWB pushed Putin back into the USSR mentality. It may take a bit of digging to find, but I'm sure it's there somewhere.

Obama has no interest in being president, or having power. He simply wants to be adored. Haven't seen anything close, back to Carter, Nixon, whoever came first.

Do yourselves a favour, Turn the sound off and watch the guy. Walking, talking, whatever.

    Oh please....
Is there any reason to believe that Obama is any more the man you describe than any other politician is operating is making excuses.
As you suggest, you need to study U.S. Presidents, or any pesidents, for that matter.

So from a sample of two presidents, you believe that one has higher self-esteem. Interesting. Have you considered publishing?

the math just doesn't add up for willard.

no, i'm not referring to his budget (but let's be honest, that math certainly doesn't add up either), i'm talking about the electoral college.

with each passing day it's becoming more likely that romney won't win ohio or nevada...and if that' holds true, romney would have to win all of the following swing states to get to 270:

    virginia
    new hampshire
    colorado
    florida
    wisconsin
    north carolina

it's possible, but not likely. which is why nate silver's got obama at ~70% right now.

Yep, Romney needs something like the perfect storm to win now, unless of course the Pollsters are entirely wrong. So, wheres the god of mormon when you need him? Hey, wait-

    'Frankenstorm' bears down on US

The superstorm expected to develop from Hurricane Sandy probably will mean that millions of people lose power for a week as airplanes are grounded and coastal areas are flooded by tidal surge and rain.
The system, dubbed "Frankenstorm" by the National Weather Service, will grow out of Sandy and two other storms rushing eastward across the US, said Tom Kines, a senior meteorologist at AccuWeather.

Could this upset the applecart? Bit hard to vote in a disaster zone.
