And it's the "not too far removed" that is central to joining the dots of linguistic history.
As a speaker of one Polynesian dialect and one Melanesian dialect, as I learn Thai I have seen quite a few amazing parallels. Polynesians apparently originated in Taiwan, so there is definitely a connection with Asia.
