When the soviet union collapsed and Mongolia gained independence I am led believe that life was very hard for sometime. Improvements won't happen overnight, and I sometimes need to remember that behind all the glitz of UBs well do do areas and my expat bubble, this is a very poor country. Life here is still harsh if you have no money

There are many "exceptional" countries who continue to put children privileged or not behind bars, literally or figuratively.

^Will go out an get some this weekend, the amount of high-end stuff is surprising to me, I think compared to Myanmar the tax on it is really low. Do know that the economy here is pretty much stagnant and the early 2000s boom is over. There are a lot of very high-end housing complexes and gaudy Russian built mansions, the vast majority are empty or unfinished. Bear in mind, I'm comparing with Mandalay.

Due to the cold, balconies aren't very popular here, I do have mini conservatory of sorts. Put a pan to soak in there overnight and it froze solid

In the tropics they used to say only mad dogs and Englsihmen go out in the midday sun. There wouldn't happen to be an equivalent saying about Englishmen and freezing weather, would there?

    ^Burnt on Teriyaki sauce.
Now on the topic of pollution, I'm wondering if staying for a second year is really worth the potential health risk. COPD and emphasymia? Developing asthma? I'd really rather not!

On a work note I did very well not to take part in the schools staff talent show, I have no real talents- can't sing and can only dance when bombed out of my tree due to being somewhat introverted. The poor buggers that did volunteer have to practice from 12pm-10pm- and that's not a typo.

    -25 can fuk off too

I spent about 10 years (2003-2013) going backwards and forwards between Thailand and Mongolia. One of the things that surprised me the most, apart from the ball-aching cold, was the number of good looking women in UB.

What is the dress code upstairs at the Marco Polo now? The first time I went there the waitresses and bartenders were completely naked but a few years later they had regressed to wearing panties.

During the short summer in UB, beer gardens are (were?) all the rage. You can see some really striking women in their thigh-high boots and mini-skirts, so that's something to look forward to.

Most of the time I was there I was living and working out of a shipping container at various places in the Gobi. The lowest temperature I recall working in was -40. Being a softcock I could not stand that for very long at a time. When I wasn't in the container I lived in a ger and can report that is highly overrated.

This was what the city looked like before the building boom started:

Lots of freelancers at the Shangri La, do have to be discreet as my school boss also owns that, along with most of UB it would seem. If you worked at that massive mine in the Gobi then we have both worked for the same wealthy family. The wife runs the school and was threatening to lock people in to practice for a teachers' talent show, go figure!

Women here are stunning, thank gawd for Tinder, this place would be too punishing without ger buddy action

The trip to the ger can be more fun than the destination. I don't think Tinder had been invented when I was there.

Nothing like some wandering troubadours to keep the boys in the desert workshop amused.

    ^heh...

I have a pic with 2 Mongolian girls, sitting on a bench. The girls were part of the group who came in January - I was assistant tour guide. Makes me wonder, if I posted that pic here, I wonder who would "do" whom? Heh....

Take care of your lungs, ears & nose, Mandy. Enjoy the winter.
