Potatoes, onions and carrot are locally grown, most other stuff is imported in- oddly not that much more expensive, particularly the Russian stuff which is fine

"northern city of Sukhbaatar. Staff from the Ulaanbaatar

    "
Just wondering. Linguistics-wise. "baatar" in both of these city's names. Does it trace back to when these were small settlements for trading and does it mean "bazaar"? and have the same roots. You find towns called xxxxbesar a lot in Malaysia, too.

Apparently it means Red Hero, a name it's only had since 1924.

    Улаан = red
    баатар hero

Sükhbaatar was named after the revolutionary leader Damdin Sükhbaatar.

Thanks. I was just wondering. It seemed to make sense. Middle East "bazaar", Silk Road, trading posts, etc.

This coming weekend some of us from work have a plan to drive around 100 KM on paved roads then around 25 km off road to see some wild horses and stay with nomads. Here's to this week flying by!

    Sounds nice.

Did you watch the Long Way Round Mongolian episode where they do that and are served testicles?

Besar has nothing at all to do with bazaars. It means big.

"Pasar" for market or bazaar. Pasar besar for large market or the main market, for example Pasar Besar Seremban.

Thanks. Linguistics is interesting, as is etymology. There's always pronunciation evolution of words, so "pasar", "bazaar" or "baatar" could have had a common root given the context of a town. Turns out they didn't.
You bring up an interesting thing though: So Bahasa Malay has "pasar" (bazaar) for market...where did that come from?

This weekend the bathroom flooded- the cause being a backed up washing machine. Water went down into the apartment below and now there is drama I could do without, dammit. Admin are blaming me and getting shirty. Willing to pay up if I overloaded the machine, but it had two shirts in it. If I could click my fingers and be back in Rangsit, today would be the day.

Lessons were a breeze, kids are starting to follow basic classroom rules and human etiquette, so that is a massive improvement over two weeks of intensive group work, modeling behavior, rewarding positive behavior and improving my start to lessons- thanks for the tips Crackerjack!

    Interesting!
And it's the "not too far removed" that is central to joining the dots of linguistic history.
As a speaker of one Polynesian dialect and one Melanesian dialect, as I learn Thai I have seen quite a few amazing parallels. Polynesians apparently originated in Taiwan, so there is definitely a connection with Asia.

"In fact, when it comes to palliative care, Mongolia is performing far better than any comparable economy, and is ahead of several European states with much more developed healthcare systems and greater spending power, "
Might be because of the high number of chronic respiratory disease patients.
