I did have to groom me horses because we weren't rich.

But, far more importantly, why would you turn down a goat in Oman???

    Cycling should be banned!!!

^ I was never a socialist, Cyrille - they is fuking eejiots. I was always, and remain, left of centre. If the right has taken significant steps towards facism and the left is either neo-liberals who are quite a bit more right than I or lunatic university children style left, then boringly, I've stayed pretty consistent.

Last Friday night you were telling me you were a socialist inspired by Foucault.

And in fact that you were more of a socialist than me.

I was thinking that might be why you groomed your own horses.

^ Well, I did have quite a lot of drinks last Friday, as you yourself correctly highlighted. I do like Foucault though, quite a lot, and Fairclough - wouldn't agree with everything they say, but their critical discourse analysis is a very useful tool and shouldn't be disregarded as so many do, imho.

Frankly, the horses were a pain in the arse, my mum always loved horses and rode out race horses as a youngster, so she bought one, but I was the rider. Going everyday (either before or after school) to look after them was not my ideal way to spend time as a teenager. On the upside, I was the only straight male at the stables, so did get plenty of action with the lady riders... Edmond would have been proud of me, as they were mostly schoolgirls (I off course was a schoolboy) and, as it was mostly after school, we were in our school unifoms...

    I'm not well.

Not in a dressing Anna up in my wife's knickers kind of well, but proper ill.

I woke up Thursday and felt I had some food in my back top teeth, which is weird cos I rarely eat now I'm back under 250kg.

Then they were aching and I put it down to my usual grinding, so I booked a dentist appointment for yet another fucking nightguard, which I won't use.

Friday night, shivering and shaking in bed - and I haven't had any heroin for days.

Woke up Saturday and my throat hurt, my jaw ached, pressure under my eyes and my nose is non-stop fucking streaming.

I googled it and it reckons sinusitis and that it can often cure itself.

    Is that true?

I've decided to have a 36 hour booze while I find out anyway. Doesn't feel too painful at the moment, unsurprisingly.
    Wow.

    Just.

    Wow.

It sounds like manusitis to me, completely self inflicted.

Pleased to say that I survived.

    Phew.

Epic mucus wars resolved with some nasal drops.

Going fishing now, but will pick up some cans on the way back for some epic bantz later.

We had loads of Brentford stuff when I was young. Easy to sneer at but for a working mother with three children the laundry must have been a nightmare and these sheets made her life a bit easier. Thinking back, it never bothered me one way or the other.

Whilst I'm here, I'm ready for a good moan. The inability and unaffordability of repairs, forcing replacement, adding to the mountains of waste in our environment.

Example: My Toshiba rice cooker pot started losing its non-stick surface, so I thought I'd buy a new pot. Yea, right. Over B1,000 for just the Toshiba original pot! Then there was none available anyway. They just expect you to buy a new rice cooker. Eventually I found a replacement of the right size from China, still cost me about B700. It seems to be a quality bit of kit and my rice cooker lives on.

Bigger example: My LG washing machine started thumping, some idiot local told me it was because the floor wasn't flat and went away. I decided the shock absorbers were fooked, hard to be sure without full disassembly. Anyway the Current Wannabe Missus Shu got on to the LG agent. A shock absorber is B1,500, for one! Times three shock absorbers. Plus labour. It's beginning to look like a new machine is a better option. Not to be defeated, my mate Lazada found LG genuine spares, B1,700 for a set of three. A different and somewhat competent local came and fitted them for B200. The machine now runs sweetly. It is absurd that companies can make repairs so expensive.

Fortunately I don't have a Bosch/Siemens washer. These evil coonts now sell machines with sealed drums - the metal drum used to sit inside a plastic case in two parts, bolted together. The new sealed drums are glued together, so if you need a new bearing you have to buy the entire new drum assembly. In the UK that will set you back over three hundred quid. Most people would opt for a new washer. The EU fusses about power and water efficiency but they let manufacturers build redundancy into their products. (Of course governments earn VAT on new sales, so there is a glaring conflict of interest, they don't really support a right to repair.)

Meanwhile, the soft-close lid on my Mogen toilet made a nasty snapping sound and it no longer closes softly. A new seat? That will be B2,500. The entire toilet complete costs B4,900. I'll just have to close it manually, in the old-fashioned way.

And don't get me started on Windows 11.

You must be a glass half empty kind of guy.

It's not that individual parts are expensive, it's that entire new products are cheap.

Just like national parks and places to take the family are not more expensive for foreigners, it's that they are cheaper for Thais.

555 , of course the minted have no worries over money laundering, I find it cheaper to pay a Lao lady who has a canoe to deal with dirty money she has really prefers the rubba dub and suds to twiddling knobs, A couple of oars and 200 baht case solved.

I did need a replacement monitor (Laptop not lizard)
Local dealers wanted 7000 baht and the manufacturer.
I was about to dispose of and buy a cheapie for 15k when a little research on utube showed it was 10m DIY fix if I could find the exact piece.
Searched Phantip Lazada Temu ad Shopee no go but having got exact specs got the only one left on Ali for $71 c 2200 baht delivered , long wait but a month later well packed it arrived.
I rewatched the instructions and fixed in 10m, with a sense of achievement not merely saving but not dumping more perfectly good electronics.

While I understand OS and apps need security updates the built in obsolete nature of many items is an error, need global standards on USB and C cables for phones and recycling added to sales price.

I think $1000 PCs and Phones should have at least say 5 year warranty of support /software etc, the vendors have an interest in reselling upgrades and minor improvements again and again

Well, this is the moan thread. There is a happy, happy thread for when I want to celebrate the entirely unnecessary dumping of white goods and electronics into landfill.

Daily moan: Some (actually, quite a lot going by the number of messages) people really have no sense of humour.
