Little let down yesterday, local candle festival, our kids march in the parade, rest of the outlaws went to town, FILs court case.

Well, you need to qualify the "the tourist police do a damned fine job" statement there Ccc.. The foreign volunteer ones down Patters way are shall we say, 'less than stellar examples'...

The thai Tourist Police here in Bangkok have abysmal engrish skills and I've never see a foreign TPV here in my neck of Bangkok, not that they don't possibly exist just that I haven't ever seen one.

There is a good Liaison Translator program run out of the Lumpini Police Station, but those foreigners NEVER (or let me say very rarely) go off-site or out of the station. Instead they deal with the people who come in whether it be because they got something stolen, or were caught doin' something wrong..

I dabbled with them a while but couldn't take it.

Firstly, because the police didn't act to me like they were the least bit appreciative that I was there translating for them. Secondly, it got to where I couldn't look a foreigner in the eye with a straight face when they started their statement with "I took a thai girl from the side of Sukhumvit Soi 4 last nite at 2AM... blah-blah-blah... just woke up now, all my stuffs gone, but I have her name, it's Porn." or when someone was caught out with weed and said, "It's not mine, I was holding it for my friend"... I just couldn't take it any more, but it did let me understand why the thai police think foreigners are a bunch of dumb half-wits.

I'm still friends with a lot of the officers there and I refer foreigners who I think could or would fit in down there as translators. I just drew the line in the sand about volunteering for them if they wouldn't at least gimme a lip service acknowledgement that I'm spending my time helping them. It was nothing against the thais, as I'm that way with foreigners too.

Simon needs to grow a pair and make the police hang with him if he's gonna do that crap for them.. Having them take two hours to get there and then cut and run at the hospital is total b/s.

I am thankful I do not live or even visit an area that would require "Tourist Police". The entire things sounds absurd and quite honestly embarrassing. To be in or live in an area that requires that would make me leave or move the next day.

My take, and i will take advice from others, is they are different.

Tourist police: (supposedly) fluent in other languages, here to "help" foreigners in trouble.

Immigration police: tasked with enforcing immigration. At airport, the office you report etc. Mainly interested in burmese, lao, cambodians. Not really interested in you, but part of their portfolio.

Tourist volunteer police: farangs who work with the tourist police. no real legal status for arrest, supposed to be fluent in Thai and another language, get to wear a nice uniform.
