Why not try another SEAsian country? I don't know if you still work, but Singapore and Malaysia are far more 'real' countries and if you don't mind not being in the tropics there's HK and Taiwan - still pleasant and very vibrant

The political system doesn't lend itself to mass unrest - it is a system based on common law and though one state (Kelantan) has been fighting to introduce hudud (Islamic penal code), they have been thwarted at every turn . . . Malaysian Muslims don't want anything that will make Islam more hardline. Oh, and neither do the 40% of the population that aren't Muslim.
Want a beer or pork anything? Loads of pubs around. Pork to cook at home? Supermarkets.
Churches? All over the place.

Penang seems generally run down these days. Beautiful hotels e.g. Moonlight Bay, Shangra La etc but the rest of the island seems rather seedy. The airport is a disgrace.

Penang is going through a transformative phase. The state government (Chinese government, not Malay) has brought even more prosperity to the island and now the infrastructure has to catch up.
The airport is abysmal considering the destination . . . and the state government has plans for a large scale refurbishment with funds from bth state and federal
