^ it's funny not only how wrong you repeatedly get things, but how you feel compelled to make things up, almost continuously.

Of course, I do NOT have a white i-anything... iPhone, iPad, or anything else.

LG to Sideline Tablet Development to Focus on Smaller Devices

Bloomberg: ‘LG to Sideline Tablet Development to Focus on Smaller Devices’ ★
    Jun Yang, reporting for Bloomberg:

LG Electronics Inc., the world’s No. 4 mobile-phone maker, will sideline tablet computer development to focus more on smaller devices rather than compete head-on with Apple Inc.’s iPad. “We’ve decided to put all new tablet development on the back burner for the time being in order to focus on smartphones,” Ken Hong, a spokesman for Seoul-based LG, said in an e-mailed response to queries.
The first to dump and abandon the "tablet market", though I doubt they will be the last. The only one making any sort of profits in the tablet market is Samsung, and they are doing so with razor thin margins, creative shipping numbers, and on the coattails of Apple.

Everybody else... Well, who else really makes tablets that anyone knows about, or buys?

At least LG doesn't bite the hand that feeds it - apparently some management at LG understands the use of calculators and someone explained to them what is happening at, and to, Samsung.

iFixit: MacBook Pro’s amazing Retina Display is made by LG Philips | 9to5Mac | Apple Intelligence

Samsung used to make *all* of Apple's displays, and Apple was Samsung's #1 component customer (displays, and CPUs). Over the past several years, Apple has been shifting displays for their iMac and monitors to being LG sourced, finally culminating in a direct $5 billion investment in LG and Sharp manufacturing for exclusive manufacturing and access to future display technologies.

Aside from the first batch of new iPads, current iPad displays are provided by LG, as is the current new MacBook Pro retina display. The remaining MacBook line will next switch to retina displays as the new standard display for all of them, and I Ave no doubt that the next iPhone's screen will be LG or Sharp sourced as well - effectively seriously curtailing Samsung's business. Their CPU foundry is living on borrowed time as well, now that Apple is making a deal with TMSC in Taiwan and will source all future CPUs elsewhere within the next 12 months.

I'd short Samsung over that period. It won't look pretty for them. (Also the reason they have started to split off their display business into a separate business recently).

^ Even an idiot like you would surely know Apple couldn't rely on Samsung being a key supplier while it's trying to fuck up their Smartphone business with nuisance lawsuits?

Turning a blind eye to, or trying to justify Apple's insidious litigation seems to be a habit of yours. The rest of us - and Samsung - know what a bunch of c*nts they are.

    OS Updates and Fragmentation

By Ravi Patel on June 21, 2012 in Android, Apple, Google (Android), Software (Apple), Software and apps
While Android OEMs have continually shown a tendency to not support their handsets with updates, either promptly or at all, Apple have just announced that the 3GS will receive its 3rd major update with iOS 6. The fact that only 7% of devices accessing the Play Store are on ICS helps to demonstrate that fragmentation is a real issue for Android, and there are continual calls for Google to take action to improve the situation. What people seemed to have overlooked is the action that Google have already taken.
“We just released a new version of the Gmail app in Android Market, so Gmail updates aren’t tied to Android version releases anymore. Now you can get new Gmail stuff faster without having to wait for system updates.”
The above is a quote taken from a post on the Gmail Blog way back in September 2010. Control of Android updates ultimately lies with the OEMS and (sigh) the carriers. Given the very nature of Android, controlling the update procedure for all devices seems like it may be beyond any single party. Therefore Google took the path of least resistance and separated the updating of apps from the upgrading of the OS.
Something that struck me about Apple’s iOS 6 announcement last week was how many of the new features weren’t, strictly speaking, really OS features at all, just updates for core Apple apps. To take five examples:
Mail – inline attachments and VIP mailboxes
Siri Updates – sports scores, Open Table, new languages
    Facetime over cellular
Safari – iCloud tabs, offline reading list and landscape fullscreen mode
Maps – turn by turn navigation
I think it’s fairly safe to say that these are the kind of features which Google regularly pumps out in its various app updates. Two recent examples that spring to mind are the introduction of Priority inbox to the Gmail app and the release of Chrome for Android with cloud syncing.
For Android these are fairy routine updates, released regularly and with little fanfare. For Apple, they are marquee features of each new version of iOS, given specific presentation time by Scott Forstall. Neither approach is right or wrong of couse. That said, I definitely prefer Google’s, for the simple fact that I’m a geek and love continually trying out new things. Having to wait a year between updates of core apps isn’t something I enjoy doing with my iPad, but I can see how it helps to build a sense of excitement for each new version of iOS.
In any case the point is that while OS fragmentation is a real issue for Android, it doesn’t stand in the way of adding new features for Apps. So not having ICS doesn’t necessarily preclude a device from receiving valuable updates. There are still obvious exceptions to this approach, Chrome for Android is ICS only, but then the whole point of OS updates is to add new features and APIs that weren’t previously available. Therefore at some point, older OS support will reach its limit. That said, ICS only apps are the exception and most work happily across the last few releases.
In contrast, devices that receive iOS updates don’t always get all the new features, very often for seemingly no legitimate reason. I’m still wondering why my iPad 2 doesn’t have Siri and the iPhone 4 turn by turn navigation. It’s hard to believe that it would be due to a lack of power as both devices are still extremely capable. More likely, it’s Apple’s attempt at planned obsolescence, designed to get you to upgrade to newer hardware.
Again, it’s a different approach and while support for iOS updates is generally very strong, support for features may actually be deprecated in comparison to Android. That’s not to say that Android doesn’t have issues, I’m just looking at the topic from a different angle. While Google still has plenty of work to do, the modular nature of Android and the separation of its core apps from the OS itself are an elegant intermediate solution

Amazon Android App Store to invade Europe

    Temptations for developers
By Caleb CoxGet more from this author
    21st June 2012 11:37 GMT

Amazon will bring its Android App Store to Europe, tempting more developers to jump on board with a new revenue split, an easier submission process and a pledge to waive annual fees.
The Amazon Android App Store will expand its reach to the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain, with more countries planned following an initial rollout later this summer, the company revealed in its blog.

CyanogenMod 7.2 gets backported Android 4.0 features

The 7.x branch of CyanogenMod is based on Android 2.3 "Gingerbread", but several features from Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich", have been backported to the 7.2 release of the popular modified firmware. These include rotation effects and transitions, as well as fixes to the telephony stack.
The new stable iteration of CyanogenMod 7 (CM7) also includes updates to the lock screen such as new lock screen styles, and adds a new predictive contact search in the phone dialler. Support for Bluetooth GPS dongles, improvements to mouse and USB keyboard support, better Bluetooth Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) 1.3 compatibility, and assorted Wi-Fi fixes are among the other changes in the update.
Support for more than 20 new devices, including the Samsung Galaxy Ace, Mini and Epic, the Motorola Atrix and Sony Ericsson Xperia Live, has also been added. However, CM 7.2 marks the end of support for some devices, such as the Samsung Nexus S, as they will "graduate" to the upcoming version 9 release of CyanogenMod based on Ice Cream Sandwich, the project's next major stable update. As previously stated by the team, development on the 7.x branch will continue following this release, but will likely slow down as they shift their focus to CM9, which saw its code freeze begin last week.
A list of notable fixes and new features in version 7.2 can be found in the change log. CyanogenMod 7.2 can be downloaded from one of the project's official mirrors; instructions on how to "root" various devices and install ROMs can be found on the CyanogenMod Wiki.
The H reminds users that, as with all custom firmware, and especially with experimental builds, inexperienced users are not advised to flash their devices as they could unintentionally "brick" them, resulting in a complete loss of functionality.

Samsung is offering its UK customers an application that will allow them to transfer content from their iPhones to any Samsung Galaxy device

Samsung customers are now able to transfer content from their iOS devices to their Android kit for free using the company’s Easy Phone Sync application, available on all Samsung Galaxy devices – including the newly released Samsung Galaxy S3.

It will be made available to all UK customers who purchase a Galaxy handset.

The function allows users to transfer their iPhone content, including iTunes media such as songs and videos, to a Galaxy device without having to part ways with their cash.

The Korean firm believes the app will encourage existing iPhone users to switch to one of its Android-toting blowers.

Simon Stanford, Vice President, Telecommunications and Networks, Samsung UK and Ireland said: “We’re really proud to announce the launch of this new application and can’t wait to hear what our new and existing customers think of it.

“We know that traditionally iPhone users have been reluctant to switch to an Android device because they couldn’t use iTunes to manage their content.

“Easy Phone Sync means people can now enjoy their iTunes content on a Samsung Galaxy phone.

“What’s more is that it’s really easy for them to do, and literally takes five minutes to set up.”

As part of an exclusive licensing agreement with Media Mushroom Applications, EPS will also allow users to manage their iTunes content on their PC and Macs.

Easy Phone Sync is available to download now for both PCs and Macs.

Based on my experience I would assume the "big" thing about this will be it's ridiculous memory requirements.

Mozilla says something big is coming to Firefox for Android next week

By Gene Ryan Briones on 06/22/2012 18:21 PDT

Mozilla is saying, via its Twitter account, that something big is coming to Firefox for Android next week. Judging from the photo that you can see above, it appears that something fast, smart, and safe is coming. Currently, Firefox for Android is still in beta. But with the tight competition it is facing, the app definitely has to improve. So far the development has been consistent, yet it may be too slow for many. While I have a deep respect for Firefox, I’m currently using a different browser on my Android device.
So, let’s hope that Mozilla’s announcement today of something “fast, smart, and safe” will be “something big” indeed. This will be interesting, considering the fact that Google I/O is happening next week. It’s been rumored that Google could unveil Android Jelly Bean at the said event with Chrome as its standard browser. But as with all rumors, let’s take it with a grain of salt. Meanwhile, let’s wait for Mozilla’s surprise.

Bloody hell it is getting truly ridiculous; not too worried about GPS or Bluetooth with that price and the rest of the spec; wonder what the battery life is like:

Online Ebay retailer, DigilandUK, is selling the Kocaso M1050 Android tablet for a smidgen under £97 including delivery, making it one of the cheapest large screen tablets on the market.

The tablet comes with a Vimicro processor clocked at 1.2GHz (we're not sure whether it is a Cortex-A8 or an ARM11-based), 1GB of DDR3 RAM, 4GB on-board storage, two USB ports, a 10.1in 1,024 x 600 pixels resistive screen, a 5000mAh battery, HDMI out, Wi-Fi, a front facing webcam, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a microSD card slot and even an Ethernet port.

Oddly enough, there's no onboard GPS or Bluetooth. We'd gladly swap the Ethernet port for either. A new model, the M1060 comes with a capacitive screen but also costs 45 per cent more. Note that the Kocaso M1050 comes with a leather case and full access to Google Play.

7in tablets with a capacitive display and a similar configuration can be had for around £70 but they have a 800 x 480 pixels resolution instead.
