Android's killer feature just boosted its lead over iPhone

    By Jason Hiner
    June 29, 2012, 10:34 AM PDT

Takeaway: A key feature where of Android trumps the iPhone is notifications. With iOS 6 and Android 4.1 on the horizon, the gap is about to widen.

Leading up to Apple’s WWDC 2012 earlier this month, I wrote that Android still had one killer feature that was unlikely to be replicated in iOS 6. The feature, of course, is Android’s alert and notification system that provides timely updates of key messages and glance-able views of the most important information on your smartphone.
Now that WWDC and Google I/O have spilled the beans on the next versions of iOS and Android, it’s clear that the iPhone not only failed to gain ground on Android in notifications but is falling farther behind.
While Apple announced some good stuff coming in iOS 6 — such as 3D maps, Siri improvements, FaceTime over cellular, and the new Passbook app to digitize loyalty cards, coupons, and tickets (my favorite new feature) — the new iOS does little to improve the notification system introduced in iOS 5.
Meanwhile, in the upcoming Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean,” Google is unleashing major improvements to its already-potent notification system. With a two-finger gesture to expand the alert, Android notifications will now include additional preview information and more actionable options. For example, this enable the following :
    • For a missed call, tap “Call Back” or “Message” (to send a text)
    • For a calendar notification, snooze the alert or quickly email all of the participants using a canned response (if you’re running late or can’t make it, for example)
    • For Gmail, preview messages more fully and initiate a response
    • For Google+, see a photo that has been shared and +1 it or share it straight from notifications
    • For Google’s Music app you can see the song that’s currently playing and hit pause, play, or skip straight from the notification
While all of the examples here are from Google’s own apps, the new notification capabilities aren’t limited to those apps. Google has rolled out all of these capabilities to third party app developers and apps like Pulse, Foursquare, Spotify, and Path are already queuing up their apps to take advantage of it.
Of course, if too many apps take advantage of notifications then it can flood the notification shade and make it a lot less useful. Fortunately, Google now has a better solution for that, too. You can now long-press any notification to see which app posted it and get into the notification preferences for that app where you can disable all notifications from the app or even uninstall the app.
To get a look at the new notification system in action, take a look at the two videos below. The first video is Google’s introduction to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and the part about notifications begins at the 3:23 mark in the video. The second video is CNET’s first look at Android 4.1 and the bit about notifications runs from 0:40-0:59.

The biggest beef with Android 4.1 notifications is that they will never come to a lot of current Android devices because of the slow update fiasco in the Android ecosystem. Currently, about 65% of Android devices are still running Android 2.3 and only 7% are running Android 4.0.
The prospects for getting a lot of today’s devices onto 4.1 aren’t very good, although Google said that the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, and Motorola Xoom will get the 4.1 update in mid-July. New Android devices will start getting 4.1 in the second half of 2012, beginning with the new Nexus 7 tablet that was announced at Google I/O. However, a lot of the Android phones that will arrive in the coming months will come with Android 4.0 and will have a questionable timeline for ever getting Android 4.1. That’s too bad, since this notification system upgrade takes a great feature and makes it even better.
The next post may be brought to you by my little bitch Spamdreth

you have to admit though, all those conference presentation of new gadgets feel like a religious congregation

they all seem to be like Steve Jobs, and in that regard he was really Jesus

iOS, Android, Win8 Mobile are all religious wars and it feels like 1980s again when the OS wars started. IT never seems to change after all.

Well, considering how much time you send reading up on Apple based blogs, you sure are a zealot -- and I'm sure Apple are really concerned about the threat you pose.

Impotent little barkers like yourself, in the grand scheme, are quite irrelevant. You're just another intimidated hater...

Unfortunately it's my job. I mean, if Apple actually every did come up with something useful to the corporate world, I'd have to make sure I get it thrown out pronto.

    Whoops!

    Bad news in Samsung-Land!

Apple wins 2nd US sales ban on Samsung Galaxy - Investors.com

Apple wins 2nd US sales ban on Samsung Galaxy

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — An American judge ordered Samsung Electronics Co. to halt U.S. sales of its Galaxy Nexus smartphone while the court considers Apple's claim that the South Korean company infringed its patents.

In Apple's second victory in a week against Android devices, the U.S. District Court of Northern California said Friday that the Galaxy Nexus smartphone "likely" infringes four patents held by Apple Inc., including a patent used in the "Siri" voice-activated assistance available in the iPhone 4S.

"Apple has clearly shown that it is likely to suffer irreparable harm in the absence of preliminary injunctive relief," Judge Lucy Koh wrote in the ruling available online.

She ordered Apple to post a $96 million bond — an estimated damage sustained by Samsung from the temporary sales ban — in case the iPhone maker loses to Samsung in a later trial, scheduled for 2014. The sales ban in the United States will be effective immediately when Apple posts the bond.

The Galaxy Nexus lawsuit is one in a series of legal battles between Apple and Samsung. The two world's largest makers of smartphones together claimed more than half of the global smartphone market in the first three months of this year.

Samsung and Apple have been embroiled in multiple lawsuits in Asia, North America and Europe since April 2011 when Apple accused Samsung of copying its iPhone and iPad. Samsung shot back with claims that Apple is using its mobile technology without permission.

The latest order from the Californian court follows Koh's decision Tuesday to temporarily block the sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet computer in the United States.

But it is "the first serious blow" Apple has dealt to Samsung and Google Inc., said Florian Mueller, a Germany-based patent analyst. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 was released more than a year ago and accounts for a small portion of Samsung's mobile sales. The Galaxy Nexus smartphone was launched in the U.S. market in December 2011.

The Nexus is also the first smartphone to be powered by the most recent Android operating system called "Ice Cream Sandwich," which includes a unified search feature that lets users search information stored in various locations with a single input.

As a result of the sales ban, Samsung and Google's "co-developed flagship device for the current generation of Android will have to be stripped of some or all of its Siri-like functionality," Mueller said in an emailed response.

Samsung said it is disappointed with the court order and will take all legal measures.

"We are currently working closely with Google to resolve this matter, as the patent in question concerns Google's unified search function," said Nam Ki-yung, a Samsung spokesman.

"Samsung will continue to take all available measures, including legal action to ensure the Galaxy Nexus remains available to consumers."

Apple did not return calls seeking comment.

Like I said on the other thread - The Nexus: Is it still selling?

I mean you have the Nexus S, SII, SIII, and Note. Who wants to go back to a Nexus these days?

Either they are aiming at the wrong target, or the wheels of justice are sufficiently slow that it's way behind the product cycle.

Same as banning the old Tabs when the Tab II's are in the shops nowadays.

    No real win here.

When they can nobble one of the flagships, now *that* will up the ante.

Kinda weird how you're not all over Google's Nexus 7 for not providing Flash - considering that's one of your big arguments against all the iOS devices, isn't it?

Funny how the lack of Flash Player support was only a problem with Apple devices.

Oh, and guess what? In addition to missing Flash, the Nexus 7 will also not have any Music, Magazines or TV shows, outside the US.

I'm sure that'll be okay - consumers will be vowed by the superiors and the ability to do... nothing with it.

Ed Baig, listing the pros and cons in his Nexus 7 review:

Pro: Thin and light at sweet price. Jelly Bean. Excellent screen. Fast, fluid. Includes $25 spending credit.

Con: No cellular connectivity. No rear camera. Fewer tablet-specific apps. Limited storage.
No connectivity.... and basically, no apps. WINNING!

Read the little not-so-fine-print on the bottom?

They had to turn off the 4G feature in order to get acceptable battery life numbers.

I guess you're back to lies and misdirection, because the truth would hurt too much.

Real world usage of the Samsung S III battery clocks in at a more realistic 5.5 hours, translating to 330minutes, versus the claimed 726 minutes - from the very article you "forgot" to link.

Here’s the deal with battery life. The Samsung Galaxy S III has a 2100mAh battery, which is fairly large compared to other phones on the market. Be that as it may, all the extra features that make the Galaxy S III amazing (like the NFC and WiFi Direct stuff) end up tugging pretty vigorously at the battery. Pair that with a 4G LTE radio and there’s bound to be some trouble.

Google's finally lost it - the Nexus Q

The Google Nexus Q Is Baffling - NYTimes.com

Incredibly, the Q can’t even play music that you’ve loaded on your phone or tablet. Again, what the — ?
There are lots of boxes that connect to your TV and play music and video from the Internet: Apple TV, Roku and so on. They cost from $50 to $100. So what was Google thinking when it designed a machine that does about one-tenth as much — and costs $300?
Does *LESS* than the AppleTV, and costs 3x more.

If you or the friend then taps the name of a song in your online Google account, it starts playing immediately, rather than being added to the queue as you’d expect. A Google rep explained to me that you’re not supposed to tap a song to add it to the playlist; you have to use a tiny pop-up menu to add it. More bafflement.
Yeah, yet someone at Google thought this was a good idea.

Apple is certainly not losing sleep over this...

The Nexus 7 tablet, on the other hand, gets consistently good reviews.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/05/te...f-the-art.html

It's apparently a well-built, great tablet, it you plan on doing nothing in particular with it, in the rest of the world - since there's no media support anywhere outside the US for it, yet it's all being touted as a great platform for .... media!

Oh, yeah, and not really too many usable apps, either.

    Good luck, Google.

Maybe I'm missing something, but they had 4G off for all of the phones in the list, it's a comparative test.

The result speaks for itself, even if you are upset about it.

I've got one of them macbook pros. Up to the hilt with overspec (8GB Ram)

I use it because I use Logic Audio, and apple bought Logic several years ago and sneaky fucks stopped making software for PC so - no choice.

Other than that would never use it. Fancy overpriced stuff. Not gonna say it's shit - cos it's not, but when you factor in the price and the way they lock everything it's nothing but marketing.

Android app allows users to film police activity

New York: A US civil rights advocacy group has launched a free mobile phone application that allows users to record police activity discreetly, saying it will help boost police force accountability.
The New Jersey branch of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) explains that “Police Tape,” available to the public since Tuesday, “allows people to securely and discreetly record and store interactions with police.”
The Android phone application, available for download on the website of the ACLU of New Jersey, is “an essential tool for police accountability,” said the office’s executive director Deborah Jacobs.

“Too often, incidents of serious misconduct go unreported because citizens don’t feel that they will be believed.”

Unlike traditional smartphone recording apps, “Police Tape” disappears from the screen once it is launched, minimising the possibility that police will notice the recorder. The application allows users to send the file to the ACLU for safe-keeping and analysis.
    Legal advice
“Police Tape” also contains legal advice on the rights of citizens confronted by police.
The ACLU of New Jersey website cites several court rulings that recognised citizens’ rights to film police activity.
A similar application for iPhone will be available later this summer, the site says.
