Well after trying all the common 'ICS' 4.0.x mods for my SGS I9000, I think the hardware is simply not up to the task.

Ecstatic now that I've gone back to 2.3.6 - Darky's ROM. Version 10.2 is nutted right down now and fully optimized to get the most out of your phone. Using 'GO launcher' for the UI which is the best. Gonna stick with this now after fiddling around with different ROMs forso long. It should serve it's purpose another year or so, so maybe hold back on the SGS III and see what comes out this year.

^ Yep, the SGSII doesn't *quite* have the juice, and so I reverted back to GalNet Miui, which is smooth, fast and quite customisable.

I'll stick with this phone for the foreseeable future (i.e. until I get pissed and sit on it or something).

    Ah, good spot.

But as I said, I've tried a number of version of 4.03 on the SGSII and it feels sluggish compared to 2.3.7.

With Miui installed, the phone works great and has plenty of functionality.

TBH I don't see any real benefit running ICS on this phone.

Yeah I got the original SGS and it seems that a good tweaked ROM running 2.3.6 is about the limit for this phone before getting sluggish and laggy. It's still very good functionality.

SGS II should be able to handle ICS 4.0. Otherwise the whole thing is pointless. They're still a fair ways from getting this right and it might be early to say but 4.0 might turn out to be as big of a flop as 2.1 was.

Had hours to kill in the airport the other day, so I downloaded and installed Black Infinitum, which is a build based on 4.04.

Nice and fast, stable, big improvement on battery life.

I like it and it stays.

It's based on AOKP which is open source. AS of March they said all AOKP ROMs are based on 4.0.3, but this ROM says it's 4.0.4.

What "issues" are you referring to? I'll tell you if I've experienced any of them.

^ AOKP is a modified version, and people are making customised builds from this, rather than Google's version.

Oracle Versus Google Android Trial Begins Today

    Written by
    Darren Allan

Darren was a staff writer and then Deputy Editor at IDG Media on PC Home. He has since move

Expected to last two months, ending in a potential landmark judgement

Over in the US, Oracle's lawsuit against Google kicks off today.
Oracle's assertion is that Google's Android mobile operating system infringes its intellectual property rights concerning Java technology. Initially, Oracle claimed Google had violated seven patents, but the scope of that has since been narrowed down to two violations.
Even so, that represents $1 billion in potential damages, a pretty hefty chunk of moolah.
Google, for its part, claims that certain aspects of Java simply can't be copyrighted by Oracle - and indeed those in the software industry are concerned about the precedent which might be set here, should Oracle be victorious.
Oracle's argument runs that because Google used Java technology (which Oracle acquired when the company bought Sun) in Android, and then gave the OS away for nothing, this removed the possibility of Oracle licensing Java to smartphone manufacturers.
Oracle noted: "Because Android exploits Java but is not fully compatible with it, Android represents Sun's, and now Oracle's, nightmare: an incompatible forking of the Java platform, which undermines the fundamental 'write once, run anywhere' premise of Java that is so critical to its value and appeal."
The row centres principally on 37 APIs used in the implementation of Android, which allow devs to write Java-compatible code.
Dan Crow, CTO at Songkick and a former Google tech team leader, told the BBC: "APIs are the glue that allows computer programs to talk to each other - in this case Android apps use them to access the phone's features like its screen and memory."
He added: "If Oracle wins the case and APIs are held to be copyrighted, then in theory, virtually every application - on Android, Mac OS, Windows, iPhone or any other platform - has to be at least re-released under new licence terms."
"This could result in many applications being withdrawn until their legality is resolved."
Those are the far-reaching implications at stake here, and big cheeses are expected to take the stand in the trial which will probably span over the next two months. Both CEOs, Larry Ellison and Larry Page, are likely to be called to the stand.

Samsung Galaxy S3: How to beat the best of Android

    April 16, 2012 2:52 pm

This morning, Samsung sent out press invites to an announcement event on May 3rd, which it claims will be an opportunity to ‘come and meet the next Galaxy’. It’s undoubtedly going to mark the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S3, but what can we expect?
We’ve been through all the rumours and supposed specs before, but we thought it’d be best to look at the current benchmarks and see what Samsung has to beat. Join us on a tour of our dream Android specs…
    Build: HTC One X

Despite some isolated complaints that the screen flexes when pressed too hard, the HTC One X is a brilliantly put-together phone. Its unibody design is hewn from a single slab of polycarbonate. It feels good to hold, looks futuristic and has an air of solidity.
Rumour has it that the Galaxy S3 will be all wrapped up in ceramic casing, that’ll refuse to come apart a la the iPhone.
Hopefully it’ll knock spots off of the competition, while showing the iPhone 4S a thing or two about how to survive falls, just as .
    Display: Sony Xperia S

We weren’t blown away by the Xperia S. The body design looks unfinished and some of the choices Sony’s made are poor. That said, its display is amazing. The reason for that is simple: Sony knows what it’s doing when it comes to screens, thanks to years spent perfecting its BRAVIA TVs.
Sony’s 4.3-inch 1280×720 HD LCD screen is imbued with BRAVIA tech to ensure that blacks are ultra black and the brightest colours are just that: bright. And very, very crisp. The Galaxy S3 has its work cut out for it, but then Samsung’s no slouch in the display stakes either: the Super AMOLED tech found on the Galaxy Tab 7.7 is, to the naked eye, pretty close to the quality found on the new iPad.
    Camera: Sony Xperia S

Samsung also has to beat the Xperia S for camera tech; the cam here is currently second to none in the world of Android.
The 12-MP Exmor R sensor on the back of the Xperia S is a beast. The number of Megapixels is nice, but it’s the lens that’s the star. It picks up an extraordinary amount of detail. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is reported to boast an 8-megapixel rear-facing cam, but it’ll have to cram in some serious tech to outshoot Sony and its Cyber-Shot know-how.
    Operating system: Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Ah. This is a thorny issue. While we like what HTC has done on the HTC One S and One X in terms of integrating the Sense UI with Android 4.0, we have to say that we prefer the undoctored Ice Cream Sandwich experience.
With that in mind, we really hope that the Galaxy S3 sticks with the stock Android 4.0 UI, as it did with the Galaxy Nexus. It won’t, of course, but it really should -Samsung’s overlay is contrived and removes some of the better features that Google’s worked to improve. Trouble is, as far as Samsung’s concerned, users who upgrade from the Galaxy S or Galaxy S2 will want a similar experience, hence the inevitable use of the TouchWiz UI. Still, Fingers crossed, ey?
    Battery: Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx

The battery on Motorola’s newest handset is something of a revelation for Android, easily lasting two days under normal use. But that’s just the start. Moto claims you can take part in a 21-hour call, surf the web for seven straight hours or watch movies for 15 hours.
The Galaxy S3 needs to outdo this. We’re sick of the current smartphone battery mentality; that they’re not expected to last very long. If the Galaxy S3 wants to win our hearts, it really needs to provide something that will match Motorola’s new technology.
Any more for any more? What features and aspects do you want to see Samsung smash with its new flagship Galaxy phone? Let us know below…

    windows xp

Hey guys. When I used to download pictures from my camera, all I did was insert the card to my computer. Then a window would pop up asking what I wanted to do and it would give me several options. I would click on download to my picture file and walla. That was all there was to it.
My computer crashed and I had windows 7 installed. Now when I try to download pictures, the window doesn't open up anymore and I can't figure out how to download my pictures.
Could any of you computer experts please tell me what to do. I'm lost. Thanks

^ LOeave the card in your phone and connect it via USB see if that works. Depending on your phone, you made need to change the settings to allow USB mass storage.

I've answered you in a PM. Win 7 probably needs drivers for the device.

Right-click "My Computer" and select Manage.

Then open Device Manager from the resulting menu.

If you see a yellow triangle, Right-Click the device in question and "Update Driver software".

It may require a reboot after the driver install.

    Yes.

So does Windows XP, but the vendors normally use one provided by Microsoft or include their own in their OEM version.

So if you install Windows 7 and the driver isn't included on the Windows install CD, you can either search Windows Update for one, or if it isn't there, you have to find out the exact component make/model and go sniffing around the vendor website.

I normally use Unknown Device Identifier to get these specs.
