    Absolutely right.

Plus the fact that over 80 % of illegal immigrants fly into Aus.

Still, I guess political spin, media hype, and general ignorance will prevail.
Although I would agree that Australia has a small number of refugees compared to the USA or Canada, I would not call the actual number miniscule. And don't forget, we have a smaller population (10% of the USA's ).
Mid, I just clicked on the link you provided. It seems you have not read it properly, which destroys your credibility. You say that "The majority by a country mile are in West Bank + Gaza". What nonsense ! Point #3 in that link lists "Ratio of Refugees to Host Country Populations" and these 2 countries come in at the top of that particular list only because THEY HAVE TINY POPULATIONS.
It's a RATIO, you twit ! Where is your sense of proportion ? You just said that the majority of the world's refugees (by a country mile) are in the West Bank and Gaza. Do you realize what a ridiculous statement that is ??????

Jandajoy, you are just as silly and lacking in credibility to say that 80% of illegal immigrants fly into Oz. Go to the Australian Parliamentary Library website here:
Boat People, Illegal Migration and Asylum Seekers: in Perspective (Current Issues Brief 13 1999-2000)
and in the section entitled "Some Comparative Statistics" you will see:

"The great majority of 'illegals' have arrived legally, and overstayed their tourist, student or other short-term visas. The true extent of illegal entry is unknown with certainty; detection figures obviously reflect only the minimum number. However, it would appear that those who arrive illegally, that is without a valid entry visa, by boat or plane, comprise a relatively small (in the order of 10 per cent) albeit rapidly growing proportion of Australia's illegal population. In recent years, illegal air arrivals have outnumbered illegal boat arrivals, however in 1999 the ratio was reversed, with boat arrivals outnumbering air arrivals."

There's more, but I can't be bothered quoting. Focus on what you are saying !
Before you go and make broad sweeping statements I suggest you look up the simple statistics and don't misquote them or twist them around. Saying something like that shows just as much lack of proportion as Mid's statement.
And by the way, many of the overstayers leave....they just do it late.
