UNDATED (AP) — Passengers on some flights -- particularly those from overseas -- are being told they have to stay in their seats for the final hour, with no access to carry-on baggage, and nothing in their laps. It's among the extra security steps being taken in the aftermath of the attempted bombing over Detroit.

Father warned US about plane bomb suspect's behaviour

BBC News - Father warned US about plane bomb suspect's behaviour

The saharareporters.com website published a photo of the detainee

The father of a Nigerian charged with trying to blow up a US jet on Christmas Day had voiced concerns to US officials about his son, it has emerged.
The father, a top Nigerian banker, warned US authorities weeks ago about 23-year-old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab's extreme religious views.
An Obama administration official told the New York Times the report had been received, but had been non-specific.
Airports worldwide have beefed up security after the alleged attack.
Mr Abdulmutallab was formally charged by a US federal judge at a Michigan hospital where he is being treated for burns after allegedly trying to detonate a device.
    'Sewn in underpants'
The detainee reportedly smiled as agents brought him in to the room in a wheelchair, dressed in a green hospital robe and with a blanket over his lap.
The Northwest Airlines plane had been carrying 278 passengers and 11 crew

High explosives are believed to have been moulded to his body and sewn in to his underpants.
He was immediately overpowered by passengers and crew aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253, minutes before it was due to land in Detroit from the Dutch capital Amsterdam.
The suspect was charged with placing a destructive device on the Airbus 330, which was carrying 289 passengers and crew, and attempting to destroy the jet.

His father, Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, is a prominent banker well-connected in Nigeria's political world, the BBC's Caroline Duffield reports from Lagos.
In recent months the family had become gravely concerned about their son, a former engineering student at University College London.
His political views had alarmed his family and his father especially.
Mr Mutallab had approached the US embassy in Abuja, reportedly in November, as well as Nigerian security officials, to voice concerns about his son.
How the accused, who had a valid US travel visa, boarded a flight in Lagos to Amsterdam, despite being on a database listing individuals of concern to the authorities, is a key question, our correspondent says.
Anti-terrorist measures in Nigeria's airports are haphazard and corruption among police, customs and security officials is endemic, she adds.

The unnamed Obama official quoted by the New York Times said: "The information was passed into the system but the expression of radical extremist views were very non-specific."
A US official told Reuters news agency the suspect's name was in a US database of suspected terrorists, but there had not been sufficient information to warrant putting him on the "no-fly" list.
It is understood that members of Mr Abdulmutallab's family are travelling to the Nigerian capital Abuja on Sunday to meet police and government officials.
    'Nice and polite'
A preliminary FBI analysis has found that the device allegedly found attached to Mr Abdulmutallab contained the high explosive PETN, also known as pentaerythritol.
PETN was used in the device worn by British "shoe bomber" Richard Reid, who is serving a prison sentence for attempting to blow up a Paris-Miami airliner in Christmas week of 2001.
    PETN HIGH EXPLOSIVE
Was found on Flight 253 suspect's person, early tests suggest
Also known as pentaerythritol, often used in military explosives
Terrorists are said to favour it because it is small and powerful
Was used in the December 2001 airliner shoe bomb attack

    Fresh security fears
    'Smoke and screams' on plane

Mr Abdulmutallab allegedly tried to detonate a device using a syringe, but it failed to go off.
The suspect has reportedly told investigators he had links to al-Qaeda and had received the explosives in Yemen for a suicide attack, after a month of training.
Mr Abdulmutallab went to the bathroom for about 20 minutes before the incident, court documents say.
When he got back to his seat, he said he had an upset stomach and he pulled a blanket over himself, the affidavit continues.
"Passengers then heard popping noises similar to firecrackers, smelled an odour, and some observed Abdulmutallab's pants, leg and the wall of the airplane on fire," the Department of Justice said in a statement.
Dutch tourist Jasper Schuringa, credited with tackling the suspect first and helping crew members to restrain him, is being hailed as a hero by fans on the internet.
The 32-year-old Dutch filmmaker has said in media interviews that when he heard a bang and smelled smoke he felt immediately it was a terrorist attack and did not hesitate to intervene.
Tighter security has meant longer queues at US airports

Mr Schuringa added that the alleged bomber had not become aggressive after the alleged bomb failed to detonate.
"He was actually a normal person, he was very scared, he had a very frightened look, he wasn't resisting or anything," he told the BBC.
"I also spoke later to one of the Dutch people who was sitting next to him and they said he was a really nice and polite man. So he was someone you wouldn't expect to commit a crime like this."
Meanwhile, delays have been caused to transatlantic flights after airlines flying in to and around the US tightened security.
Measures include cutting down on hand baggage, extra frisking of passengers at passport control and allowing more time to board.

Jesus, it seemed like everyone and his brother was on the no-fly list, a million people plus, including Nelson Mandela.

I think this points back to the utter incompetence of the Bush administration in setting up effective counter-terrorist measures. These guys knew how to line their pockets, and to get their friends in nice cushy govt jobs, but unfortunately, for all the constitutional laws they were breaking, the colossal incompetence of these people would make institutions like the Dept. Of Homeland Security impotent. Bush reading children's books after being informed of 9/11, the handling of Katrina - all that makes it rather unsurprising.

If somebody is in a suspected terrorist database, I'd expect them to be on a no-fly list. That's why all airlines have to submit passenger lists to the US authorities for flights to the USA.

As for the US authorities don't operate in Nigeria - doesn't matter because in this case they had more than enough information. If they weren't complete retards, they'd have stopped the guy from flying, or at the very least given him a good body search beforehand.

Idiots are in charge. It's sad. They don't need more powers. They need to be fired.

Far from being fired, the incompetent morons in the American Government are already drafting new ways to make flying even more miserable than it already is. Apparently we're now going to be told to stay in our seats like school children. The objective of terrorism is to weaken society by disrupting it, and in that regard the US Government seems determined to make this failed act a success for the terrorists.

Apparently the last hour before landing your not allowed out of your seat or blankets.

This should prove interesting for people like my old man with his weak bladder, he likes to pee just before landing, can't see him staying in his seat and wetting himself because a trolly dolly says so.

Hmmm, some good points if it weren't for the blame Bush chorusline; we could just as easily cast a few rocks at Clinton for prioritising his wee head over that of ObL's.

Meanwhile the real villain (beyond Islam) is probably neither of those leaders and more likely political correctness, which has swung so sharply that many people in positions of critical responsibility are afraid to do anything that could compromise their careers, even against saving lives, unless they know they are right and can also prove it to superiors in the same foundering career boat, by which time it's often too late.

The jerks are already discussing new and tougher screening measures, which now include psychologists at security points at Western airports to zero in on facial/body language. I could think of several reasons that anyone seriously proposing this should be promoted to Siberia. Lotsa people out there eager to show they have a less ineffective solution - and that it has nothing to do with Islam!

Must say at times I feel the 'terminally civilised' have earned and deserve the moral high ground, just so they can throw themselves off.

'We will do whatever is neccesary'

    What a chump.

It is his government that has allowed an untold number of students from pakistan and nigeria along with other countries, into the uk, when he has been warned again and again about the rising terror threats among the young students arriving here.

The USA expressed concern about pakistani's travelling from britain to the USA.

The uk is getting a bit of a name for having an unhealthy number of home grown terrorists, and also seems to be a haven for the f==kers.

I don't think they mean it literally, not like everyone will be cuffed to their seats, so if you want a pee you're free to visit the loo and explain about your weak bladder to the judge later.

Y'know, this is another reason I do not like Islamic terror attacks; after each one, whether failed or devastating, we gotta go through this thing about listening to the idiots.

Seems like the authority's really dropped the ball.

    Father warned about 'jet bomber'
The father of a Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up a transatlantic jet on Christmas Day had voiced concerns to US officials about his son.
The father, a top Nigerian banker, warned US authorities last month about 23-year-old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab's extreme views, say officials.
US sources confirm a file was opened, but say the information did not warrant placing the accused on a "no-fly" list.
Airports worldwide have increased security after the alleged attack.
Mr Abdulmutallab was formally charged by a US federal judge at a Michigan hospital where he is being treated for burns after allegedly trying to detonate a device.
British police are also searching a flat in a smart area of London, where Mr Abdulmutallab is believed to have lived while studying in the city.
    'Sewn in underpants'
The detainee reportedly smiled as agents brought him in to the room in a wheelchair, dressed in a green hospital robe and with a blanket over his lap.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Associated Press has learned that a second Nigerian man has been taken into custody aboard a jetliner in Detroit after locking himself in the airliner's bathroom.
A law enforcement official tells the AP that the incident took place aboard the same Northwest flight that was attacked on Christmas Day. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the incident was ongoing.
A Delta spokeswoman says all 256 passengers have been safely taken off the plane. Delta operates the Northwest flight.

The video is interesting, however I think it was put out by Breitbart so it could be suspect.

A Northwest Airlines crew on the same flight as that targeted by an attempted terrorism attack sought have sought emergency assistance for a disruptive passenger who was taken into custody as the plane landed in Detroit.
Amid heightened global security concerns, the disturbance occurred on the same Northwest Flight 253 that was attacked by a terror suspect on Christmas Day.
On the flight, which arrived in Detroit from Amsterdam at 12.34 pm, "there was a verbally disruptive passenger, and out of an abundance of caution the flight crew requested law enforcement meet the aircraft," Susan Elliott, a spokeswoman for Delta, told AFP.
The flight with 257 passengers and 12 crew landed safely, Elliott said.
US President Barack Obama was notified about the latest security scare on a Detroit-bound airliner and requested a new security briefing from top aides, a spokesman said Sunday.
Obama "was notified shortly after 9:00 am Hawaiian time (1900 GMT) of the incident regarding an unruly passenger on the flight arriving in Detroit by NSC chief of staff Denis McDonough," White House spokesman Bill Burton said.
Burton issued the statement in Hawaii, where the vacationing Obama is monitoring the situation following Friday's attempted terror strike on a US-bound plane.
That Northwest Flight 253 -- traveling the same path from Amsterdam to Detroit as the Sunday flight -- was the target of an apparent terrorist attack by Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, whom US authorities charged with trying to blow up the plane.
CNN reported that one person was taken off the plane and into federal custody, citing an law enforcement officer saying that no device was found on the detained passenger.
TV images showed a Delta plane on the tarmac in a remote section of Detroit Metro Airport, surrounded by security vehicles, several buses and emergency response vehicles, and police with dogs.
Delta merged with Northwest last year.
US media cited government sources say the passenger barricaded himself in the bathroom for more than an hour, but his conduct has been attributed to a medical condition.

    I am not worried,……..

I just thought it was interesting how powerful such a little bit of this type of explosive can be.

By coincidence, the John Huston film "Asphalt Jungle", one of the great noir films, was on the teevee last night. Just a couple eyedroppers full of nitroglycerin. . .What these schmucks can't seem to figure out is how to rig a detonator that will pass through security.

If the people behind such attacks weren't impervious to reason (another way to say "devout believers"), they might think that the abject, almost ridiculous failure of the two pious numbskulls who have tried this attack might suggest that maybe if Allah does exist he is laughing behind the jihadists' backs. He certainly isn't being helpful to them, unless the goal of the terrorists is to cause us to freak out and continue to self-limit our freedom to travel by imposing idiotic burdens when we do:

I don't think this has been posted yet,.........more information

Some, but not all, information from TIDE is transferred to the FBI-maintained Terrorist Screening Data Base (TSDB), from which consular, border and airline watch lists are drawn. The Transportation Security Administration has a "no-fly" list of about 4,000 people who are prohibited from boarding any domestic or U.S.-bound aircraft. A separate list of about 14,000 "selectees" require additional scrutiny but are not banned from flying.

Abdulmutallab's name never made it past the TIDE database. "A TIDE record on Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was created in November 2009," one administration official said, but "there was insufficient information available on the subject at that time to include him in the TSDB or its 'no fly' or 'selectee' lists."
