I don't think the technology has changed much unless you set the activity on your watch, which makes tracking more accurate, depending on watch. I noticed that mine says I've been cycling when I do the ironing or mow the lawn. Setting the activity also gets my watch to use the mobile GPS facility rather than using up my data tracking me via the mobile network.
I work in an office and do use the step count to ensure I get up and walk, try to do at least a 30 minute walk at lunchtimes and another longer walk in the evening. I like to get at least 5000 steps in a single walk each day as long as the weather permits. Last week I managed just over 90,000 steps but I am happy if I get to 70,000 in the colder months.
