Same here. I have a few different styles of Asics depending on what I am doing but for trails and hiking I have been using Asics Gel Ventures. The Gel Venture 6 has been a really nice versatile pair of shoes for ~ $ 50. Still have my pair and they are 4+ years old and they have been abused from hiking, light jogging, yard work, bike riding and have been wet and dried countless times. I just ordered 2 more pairs of the new Gel Venture 8 to replace them.

When I had a brief port call in Norway last year a greedy Norwegian sports shop owner persuaded me to by a pair of Hoka trainers. I'd never heard of them before.

At the till I discovered they cost 1800 NOK (£150 / $200 US). I was too lazy to try any more on.

They're very comfy but six months later they're starting to fall apart, and I've only worn them maybe 3 or 4 times a week on the treadmill.

Hoka aren't interested, so moral of the story, don't buy extortionately priced Hoka footwear.

Over the decades I have tried most brands. A lot depends upon the shape of your foot, it is worth visiting one of the specialist retailers who can help you find the best shape and what is appropriate for any pronation. I never found a pair of Nike shoes that worked for me. Adidas and Nike I can wear for casual, not for running. My last pair of Saucony probably suited me best. I had to stop running, these days it's brisk walking only for me.

Armstrong's last Dinner pic inspired my impulse buy tonight.

And no, it wasn't a basic cook book to send down to Samut Prakan.

It was that tin of beans that got me thinking.

I do exactly the same at home... open a tin of beans and then battle with our roll of Thai clingfilm to try and put over the tin to keep the remains fresh and stop a crust forming on the tomato sauce. You can never find the end of Thai clingfilm, it really is awful and when you do find the end it invariably tears or half unwraps and then gets tangled up so I end up doing what Armstrong seems to have done... lose my patience and just make do with a torn off clump of cling film stretched across the top of the tin.

But then I suddenly recalled a long lost memory of my dad putting plastic caps on the catfood to stop it stinking out the fridge. They should work just fine.

Lazada even stocks them... but they also seem to be for pet food. Surely they would work OK for human food as well? I wonder why they only sell them for dog and cat food tins?

Hopefully all tins are the same size and I will have two packs of these waiting for me at home.

It's been a slow night shift and my second impulse buy was a dehydrator. When I get home my new hobby will be dehydrating mangos and any other fruit we seem to get a seasonal glut of and end up wasting.

    ^ downtime inspiration.

Re the Dehydrator, i assume the womans head is for scale purposes and if so i fear when its mango season that little puppy will be on 24/7 for two months.

What i'd do is when you cook something in the oven you add your fruit toward the end and turn it down low.

To be honest mate I haven't got a lot to do at the moment and I've got lots of time to do it in. I don't work very well without any pressure.

We're on a 3 day transit heading back down south so I'll see what I end up buying tomorrow night...

I've already been considering that... but I'd do that out in the workshop.

A pla nin biltong snack could go nicely with a Leo and Ya Dong.

The possibilities with this thing are endless.

That would not end well. You should cold or hot smoke fish.

I will reach the venerable age of 57 in a mere 4 years, at which point I will expect my Hard Yakkas to have depreciated by 1/3 from their new condition if my 12 year plan is on track

Baldy is on the money and new work boots like these come with composite toes which makes them a tad lighter in the loafers than your traditional steel toes.

More toys for the boys. This bad boy comes recommended by Mr Stumpy and has a 4-tonne pulling rating.

I am expecting great things when I tackle my first large tree with bad lean - leaning towards the power line running through the forest.

    It’s a weed Whacker, not a chainsaw.

You can get a mulching blade for the head. It is used for gorse and thick brambles? That will reduce stuff to “mulch” believe it or not. Spools of wire are not much use if you need industrial cutting, like clearing forest trails or overgrown footpaths.
