From time to time, I worked on tobacco farms in Oz and NZ, but no, I'm not a tobacco farmer, or ever was one. I travel a lot, too much to be settled on a farm.

No tobacco since 22nd December last, and don't use lobelia any more as an aid.
I use gotu kola daily as well as sage and willow, Vits C and E.

I found that the side effect of using lobelia inflata was that my belly distended, I got quite fat.
Lobelia erinus doesn't have the same effect.

Otherwise, I found no negative side effects from using lobelia.

Others have said that Champix etc which contains lobelia and varenicline caused themto swell and that depression is often a later effect of using Champix. My guess is that it's the varenicline that initially starts working as an antidepressant but as the body's tolerance to varenicline increased, depression eventually kicked in.

I found no such effects using lobelia alone.

    Four months non-smoking.

Feel good, weight gain has stopped and alcohol consumption minimal, one or two days a week. Doing more walking and shifting weight, no problems, got more energy, eat little.

Still coughing out black gunk, but breathing is good, lung capacity has increased even without lobelia, though undoubtedly the lobelia caused the initial lung improvement.

Gotu kola is great as it encourages collagen assimilation as the alveoli and bronchioles in the lungs repair themselves. Up to five leaves a day.

How're you all doing with your efforts? Good luck.

It's not an anti-depressant, it's a nicotine mimicker. The side effects are usually extremely weird dreams/disturbed sleep and headaches.

The biggest side effect is nausea. If you take it without eating first you'll want to chunder.

But I found it very effective.

Sadly, after 6 months, I lapsed back into the weed.

Might try again for Ramadhan, bugger all else to do anyway.
The next post may be brought to you by my little bitch Spamdreth

Good on ya mate! Welcome back, too!

When you do decide to stop again, don't look back!

Thanks for that fill-in info on varenicline.

Never tried it myself, so didn't get the weird dreams and disturbed sleep bit on lobeline alone.

No thing to do, that the worst time to try, but seriously give it another try Harry, I tried and failed many times and then last year, I mustered my resolve and Kicked it off, now no urges at all. I am happy I did so because after that I spent 2 moths in OZ where now smoking is definitely uncool as well as expensive, 15 $ a packet.
So a victory for social engineering eh?

    Nineteen weeks without tobacco.

Weight gain has stopped, breathing is good, blood pressure good commensurate to a 45 yr old.

    Sense of smell,....bloody amazing!!

Zero craving and not taking any more lobelia.

The trick with any drug, alcohol, lifestyle or practice cessation is to do it gradually for optimum effects, IMO.
So the slow increase then slow decrease in lobelia dosages was successful.

How's the rest of you doing?

Good on ya mate. I'm amazed that I could give up at all!

I'm quite comfortable around smokers even if I can smell them from a couple of feet or so away.

When they are smoking, I find the smell of burning tobacco quite pleasant sometimes, without feeling like having a smoke as a result.

My old pipe and tin of tobacco is still sitting there wrapped up in a bag in my odds and sods drawer, a bit like a memorial to an old friend.

It is funny though - met a smoking pal a few weeks back and as he jumped into my car, he fecking stank. The smell of the smoker, especially the indoors smoker really is rather nasty.

^^ Two years? Wow! Maybe my sense of smell came back quicker because I was a pipe smoker, which entails less chemicals in the tobacco and no papers.

What really shocked me was to be able to pick up on lingering smells that cling,....like food going off in a fridge.
After opening the fridge the other day the smell of some off leftovers seemed to cling to me, even as I moved away across the room. Strange!

The smell coming off a tobacco smoker's mouth is the most unpleasant smell I find, a bit like an ash tray, as I'd been told repeatedly in the past. Hell, I was like that!

Its strange as part of the psychology of smokers is that we like to fool ourslves "my breath dont smell". I had a visit last night from a Pal, who has given up, I said you have been smoking. He said but that was an hour ago.

Two things evident here, there is no one in deeper denial than a smoker and there is no more into self righteousness than an exsmoker.

    I am a righteous, exsmoker

I gave up sootty sticks 4-5 years ago. Never wrote down the date and can't remember what year it was I honestly thought ATT I'd be back smoking in a couple of months time.

Anyway took me 2 years to get off the nicotine gum from when stopped. The golden key how I believe I never went back was I never changed my habits. Still drank coffee in the morning a beers at night but just chewed more gum till weaned off the gum.

If you have to change another habit that you like/love to help give up smokes than you will probably go back to the smokes because you'll feel like your getting ripped off and punished by missing other things.
If you stop drinking and ciggs for 6 months and then get on the piss your body hasn't been trained properly to resist smoking when your 1/2 cut the 1st time.

I agree with you there brisie. I haven't stopped drinking a few beers or a bottle of wine whenever I feel like it as it relaxes me and I get a kick out of it.

I still get down to the pub, yak with my mates, don't avoid the smokers among them and have no problems with tobacco any more.

But.....lobelia certainly has helped me reduce my alcohol consumption, as a side effect.

Congrats! For me, I never noticed a difference in my sense of smell or taste, as they were always good.

Now I wish I could stop biting my nails. I did completely stop for a few years, but now I've started again.

    Thanks Natalie.

Try lobelia for curing nal biting too.

It seems to work in combating any addiction and is reputedly ant-carcinogenis, proven in vitrio.

Reads up about it, then if you use it, just use a small amount a square centimetre of leaf any time you feel the urge to bite your nails.

The urge will go within minutes or less.

    Good luck.
