You are childishly putting words in my mouth now Bob.

All I did was post the stats and pointed out that Bell was the only one who really performed with the bat. I didn't even mention Haddin , and tried to make you take note that Harris WAS the pick of the bowlers.....

    Sheesh.....

^ Marmers, I remember when you were over at my place in thonglor in 2005 watching the ashes and you were saying that England would never be as good at sport as australia because the climate in oz allows Aussies to play sport all year round, while poms had to stay indoors with their dressing gowns and slippers on sipping tea and eating crumpets in front of the heater for most of the year.

I gave you a hug and told you that everything would be ok someday, and loaned you my teddy to take home ( which you never returned) and this is the thanks I get!

That was the excuse I get from most Poms for decades when the subject of sport was brought up.

Now it seems all Australian youth are sitting on their computers in living rooms and not getting out and having a go.

The other reason that the tide has turned is the fact that Government funding for sports has increased in England whilst the Aussie government cut sports development funding.

I cannot remember the Government sponsored figure that was spent to fund the Woodward English Rugby Union side to win the World Cup but the figure was unbelievably high.

And even with that funding they just made it across the line and fell apart immediately afterwards.

I guess things have changed. The Poms are all out playing sport to get away from the pigs masquerading as women and the Aussie 'men' have all been castrated and made to wear maids outfits and stay at home cleaning the house.

    How times change.

    s.

Yep. Aussie kids ( and kids around the world) spend way too much time online and playing computer games...

And the Oz government needs to get serious about sport funding again as they did after the Melbourne Olympics.

Yep. The women wear the boots in most Aussie households these days, I agree.

Yes, times have changed but I am sure there are a lot of people behind the scenes scrambling to make sure we get the urn back, and put you poms back in your place

That's the long & short of it.

Since the National Lottery started up, there's been tons of money pumped into sport in the UK. Anyone can see the effect it's had. I bet the fuckers will start pulling the funds before too long though.

I completely disagree - more public funding for elitist sports is simply untenable in this day and age . . . how about more funding for education instead . . . after all, not many people advance in their life due to some bogans being spoon-fed for years all for self-gratification

Surprise surprise , Harris did his hamstring again...

Injured Harris in race to be fit for Ashes

Injury-prone Ashes hero Ryan Harris faces a race against time to be fit for the return series against England in Australia after being ruled out of action for six to eight weeks with his hamstring injury.

Harris got the bad news when he had the injury assessed after arriving back in Brisbane on Thursday.

Australia’s leading wicket-taker in England, Harris suffered the injury during the fifth Test draw at The Oval.

Arriving home on Thursday he was hopeful he would be declared fit to fly out for India in a fortnight for the Champions League Twenty20 tournament.

However a Cricket Australia statement released on Thursday evening revealed a grimmer picture with scans ruling him out for six to eight weeks, which could mean a return late October - just weeks before the first Ashes Test at the Gabba starting on November 21.

Earlier Harris warned that any ideas of fighting fire with fire by juicing up Australian wickets this summer could backfire against England.

The 33-year-old’s injury-troubled body had held together for four straight Tests for the first time in his stop-start career as he took 24 wickets at 20 apiece to be his team’s player of the series.

Harris found pace, swing, seam and bounce in all conditions as English curators served up dryer-than-usual pitches that suited match-winning spinner Graeme Swann and the reverse swing of Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad.

There’s been consistent calls for local groundsmen to doctor greentops to suit the swing and seam of Harris, Peter Siddle and Mitchell Starc and rip through the English top-order.

Harris has never played a Test at his Brisbane home ground at the Gabba and savoured the thought of ‘‘a lot of grass’’, but didn’t want local curators to overdo it.

‘‘The problem there is that their bowling attack is pretty good,’’ he said. ‘‘You can’t really.

‘‘If we make our wickets like we normally do there will be enough grass on them and enough in them (to trouble England).

‘‘Bowling at our best the batters are going to find it hard to score.

‘‘We contained Cook really well at the start and if he doesn’t get runs they really shit themselves.’’

Showing his heightened popularity, Harris was mobbed by a representative schoolboy rugby team when he flew into Brisbane Airport on Thursday morning.

I see your point, and agree that the emphasis on sport rather than education has been detrimental to Australian society in the past. I thought that the reason funding in some sports was cut was to pump more money into education ...?

I think it's the way the money is spent is the problem though ( for sport and education ) . It's all about votes and being re-elected. The new system for junior cricket for example
Is more about being 'fair and politically correct' than challenging and tough.

The first 20/20 between the Aussies and the Poms starts later today.

The only name I recognize in the Aussie side is Clarke.

I expect he was lucky to stay on in England and not have to travel back to Australia with the Ashes side and have to face the media.

^clarke doesn't usually play T20 I don't think, and he is not particularly good at it either. He is more a stroke player than a slogger. I see bailey is still captain though..

There are quite a few known players in our squad - the team doesn't look too bad actually.

Doesn't start till 2am here, so I will not be watching it...

Match scheduled to begin at 18:30 local time (17:30 GMT)

    England squad
SCJ Broad*, RS Bopara, DR Briggs, JC Buttler†, MA Carberry, JW Dernbach, ST Finn, AD Hales, MJ Lumb, EJG Morgan, WB Rankin, JE Root, JC Tredwell, LJ Wright

    Australia squad
GJ Bailey*, MJ Clarke, NM Coulter-Nile, JP Faulkner, Fawad Ahmed, AJ Finch, JR Hazlewood, PJ Hughes, MG Johnson, CJ McKay, SE Marsh, GJ Maxwell, SPD Smith, MA Starc, AC Voges, MS Wade†, DA Warner, SR Watson

True as well. I went to a private school abut will never understand why they are funded by the taxpayer as well . . simply madness, another example of elitism

Well yes, that is ridiculous - thankfully not to the extent of the Americans, though

It seems we do have some spirit in at least one of ours:

I don't care about the difference between T20 or 50 or tests . . . give the man a go at the series

Horse dancing??? Pfffft ....... The biggest farce 'sport' on the planet! Funny how the horses that sell for millions of dollars are the ones that keep winning no matter if a professional rider or a chimpanzee is in the saddle! Elitism to the extreme that one!

Perhaps the Olympics wasn't a good example - I just want the urn back!

Australia won the first T20 - thanks to Aron Finch ..... Warner failed again, and no other stand out performances - Faward Ahmed who recently got his Australian citizenship played his first game for the national team - though didn't do anything special..

Root played well for the poms..

    He's strayan Bob.

A solidly-built, aggressive batsman from the country town of Colac in south-west Victoria, Aaron Finch enjoyed a breakthrough season for the Bushrangers in 2009-10. The season featured his maiden first-class century, as he established a place in the middle order, and he starred in the state's triumphant Big Bash campaign. Only Kieron Pollard scored more runs than Finch's 189 at 47.25 in the Twenty20 tournament, and it was enough to earn him an IPL deal with the Rajasthan Royals, where he played one match. A collection of 416 Sheffield Shield runs at 37.81, as well as 347 runs in the FR Cup, confirmed Finch had become an important part of Victoria's plans. He made his first-class debut against the touring Indians in December 2007 but the match was washed out and he had to wait more than two years for his first innings. A 2007 stint at the Academy ended with a ban for not keeping his room tidy, but he showed he was maturing by losing weight during 2007-08, his first season with a full Victoria contract. Finch represented Australia at the Under-19 World Cup in 2006.
