Yeah, I don't quite see how that's a bad thing either. The War on/of (depending on your perspective) Terror's the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff or the bandage to apply after the injury.

Combating poverty, a root cause, is the saftey rail at the top of the cliff and instructions to avoid injury.

But is it really so radical for the US to have a similar system of State health care as every other western democracy? I've thought for several years now that what is radical is that this wealthy nation does not afford this level of entitlement- that is basically your birthright in most advanced countries- to it's own citizens.
It all boils down to the 'S' word: "socialism". A word that has the power to turn even a seemingly rationale American into a quivering mess of fear. Even more bizzare considering that the US already has elements of socialism. I think it can all be traced back to the 50's, 60's and the Red Menace (check uder your beds!) scare and propaganda.
