It's been said before... this is the Americans getting shot thread. Why don't you start a thread about mass shootings in the UK and see who gives a shit... it's just not as prolific or stunning as American idiocy.

Not often I agree with Neo but this has been stated before. It's a thread about the US, you complain about England, Scotland etc.... . . . so START a thread about it instead of laying the victim all the time.

If it were an intelligent discussion it would be one thing. But it's not. It's a rant-fest. And if it's disrupted with an observation it is, like I said, predictably unwelcome.

This is quite amusing, MO State Rep Stacey Newman has just trolled RW gun-nut brigade and made quite a clever point at the same time:

Missouri Dem Proposes Placing Same Restrictions On Guns As Abortions

Missouri state Rep. Stacey Newman (D) pre-filed a bill Tuesday that would restrict access to firearms in the same way her state restricts access to abortion.

Newman's bill includes a 72-hour waiting period for purchasing guns and watching a 30-minute video on firearms fatalities before purchasing. It also requires the firearms dealer be at least 120 miles from the purchaser's residence.

The bill would require that a gun purchaser visit an emergency room at the nearest "urban hospital" on a weekend between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. "when gun violence victims are present."

Within 72 hours of their purchase, the individual also must meet with at least two families who have been victims of firearm violence and two faith leaders who have presided over funerals in the last year of a child gun violence victim.

The bill was pre-filed for the 2016 session, which begins in January, and is unlikely to get traction. Here's the full text.

Newman tried a similar approach in 2012 when she unsuccessfully proposed a bill to limit vasectomies unless the procedure "would protect him from serious injury or prevent his death," according to the River Front Times.

Actually it is the hate in the person that fires the projectile, the gun is only an instrument on it's own it can fire nothing.

New York Times in rare front-page editorial calls for outlawing some rifles
    Source: Reuters - Sat, 5 Dec 2015 07:07 GMT
    Author: Reuters

    By Alex Dobuzinskis

Dec 5 (Reuters) - The New York Times, in its first front-page editorial in nearly a century, on Saturday called for outlawing the kinds of rifles used in the California shooting massacre this week that left 14 people dead.

The newspaper's editorial comes three days after Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, a married couple, carried out the mass shooting in San Bernardino with legally-purchased, .223 caliber assault-style rifles. FBI officials have said they are investigating the shooting as an "act of terrorism."

The couple also had semi-automatic pistols, and U.S. officials have said Malik is believed to have pledged allegiance to a leader of the militant group Islamic State.

"Certain kinds of weapons, like the slightly modified combat rifles used in California, and certain kinds of ammunition, must be outlawed for civilian ownership," the New York Times editorial said.

The editorial went on to argue that an act to outlaw such weapons would "require Americans who own those kinds of weapons to give them up for the good of their fellow citizens."

The piece made brief mention of other U.S. mass shootings. "Let's be clear: These spree killings are all, in their own ways, acts of terrorism," it said.

President Barack Obama has called for legislation to make it harder for criminals to get guns. He has noted mass shootings do not happen as frequently in other advanced countries and said the United States should address the problem.

Republicans in Congress have mounted heavy opposition to gun control measures.

The debate over gun control has long been one of the most contentious political issues in the United States, with the right to gun ownership enshrined in the U.S. Constitution's 2nd Amendment.

In a post on the website of the libertarian magazine Reason, senior editor Brian Doherty criticized the editorial, and in particular the call for citizens to eventually give up certain rifles.

"What the Times is calling for is, beyond its countable costs in money and effort and the likely further erosion of civil liberties, also (as they surely know) calling for a massive political civil war the likes of which we haven't seen in a long time," Doherty wrote.

It is the first time The Times has run an editorial on the front page since 1920, when the newspaper expressed dismay at the nomination of Warren G. Harding as the Republican presidential candidate. Harding went on to win the general election that year. (Reporting by Alex Dobuzinskis; Editing by Simon Cameron-Moore)

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) just said, “Sensible gun laws work. We’ve proven it in California.” She knows that San Bernardino is in California, right?

Actually they wouldn't have been able to buy the weapons in California if Jerry Brown hadn't vetoe'd the bill to ban them.

They were already illegal until the gun manufacturers changed the design of the weapon to get round existing laws.

Let's look at a simple parallel in London today:

Hate filled man injures 4 with a knife.

If we chose to offer some critical thought one might consider what such a headline might read in a NY subway station:

Hate filled man kills 20 with gun.
