And, as it turns out, Jack Gilchrist is no different. The New Hampshire Union Leader reports today that Gilchrist benefited from millions of dollars of government loans and contracts to get his business on its feet:

In 1999, Gilchrist Metal received $800,000 in tax-exempt revenue bonds issued by the New Hampshire Business Finance Authority “to set up a second manufacturing plant and purchase equipment to produce high definition television broadcasting equipment,” according to a New Hampshire Union Leader report at the time…

Last year, Gilchrist Metal also received two U.S. Navy sub-contracts totaling about $83,000 and a smaller $5,600 Coast Guard contract in 2008, according to a government web site that tracks spending.

Gilchrist wisely took advantage of these funds, which help small businesses like his survive in their early years. He also took a U.S. Small Business Administration loan in the late 1980s totaling “somewhere south of” $500,000, plus matching funds from the federally-funded New England Trade Adjustment Assistance Center.

In a lesson on basic government spending that Romney himself could learn from, Gilchrist succinctly explained: “I’m not going to turn a blind eye because the money came from the government. As far as I’m concerned, I’m getting some of my tax money back. I’m not stupid, I’m not going to say ‘no.’ Shame on me if I didn’t use what’s available.”

    How Mitt saved the Olympics

By convincing the Bush Administration to bail out the Olympics with $1.5 billion picked from the pockets of US taxpayers: Balloon Juice » Blog Archive » How Mitt “saved” the Olympics…
When the dust settled, Mitt’s lobbying effort brought over $1.5 Billion to the SLC Games. In 2000 the GAO did an audit of US taxpayer support for Olympic Games in the country. Taxpayers spent $74,654,000 for the LA Games in 1984; and $608,512,000 for the 1996 in Atlanta. These were both summer Olympics and so you would expect them to cost more. But, the 2002 Winter Games in SLC blew the doors off the Treasury—taxpayers paid $1.5 Billion to bail out Mitt.
For the LA GAmes, taxpayers only paid for the Federal role during the games. In the Atlanta and SLC Games, taxpayers paid the most money to help the host city prepare their infrastructure. We spent $423,919,000 to help Atlanta and almost thrice that ($1.25 Billion) for Salt Lake City—and this is where the post-Olympics scandals can be found.
Look at the map on the top of this post. It is from the GAO report. It shows the 10 major road and highway projects funded by taxpayers for the Winter Games. Where these roads went, and who had control of the land was at the core of the grift. It is an old school scandal (remember Chinatown) and a scandal that can be mapped. The land around these taxpayer funded projects were owned by some people before the Olympics game to town. Then other folks magically got control of the land. And then the Federal Government built out the infrastructure to these parcels (roads, water sewer, etc.). Next, it could be developed. It could be rented and sold and resold. Businesses could start. New communities could start. Utah could have an economic boom—all because taxpayers bailed out the Olympics.
And yet, the folks who profited from this bailout—Mitt and all his pals—will pretend that they saved the f*cking Olympics and that they were brilliant Masters of the Universe who create wealth and profit. The fact that they owe everything to their ability to fleece US taxpayers will never be mentioned.

^And the documents related to the games when Dim Mitt was in charge,….destroyed: After Romney pledged transparent Olympics, key documents were destroyed - The Boston Globe

Mitt Romney promised “complete transparency” when he took charge of the scandal-plagued Salt Lake City Olympics, a pledge that included access to his own correspondence and plans for an extensive public archive of documents related to the Games.

But some who worked with Romney describe a close-to-the-vest chief executive unwilling to share so much as a budget with a state board responsible for spending oversight. Archivists now say most key records about the Games’ internal workings were destroyed under the supervision of a staff member shortly after the flame was extinguished at Olympic Cauldron Park, after Romney had returned to Massachusetts.

“Transparency? There was none with [the Salt Lake Organizing Committee] when he was there,” said Kenneth Bullock, a committee member who represented the Utah League of Cities and Towns. “Their transparency became a black hole. It was nonexistent.”

    Where the returns?

    New national poll out: http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/MSNBC/Se..._July_Poll.pdf

    Obama 49%
    Dim Mitt 43%

Romney Destroys Obama Foreign Policy Record at Veterans of Foreign Wars

"He went right at Obama from the outset:

    [H]as the American economy recovered?

Has our ability to shape world events been enhanced, or diminished?

Have we gained greater confidence among our allies, and greater respect from our adversaries?

And, perhaps most importantly, has the most severe security threat facing America and our friends, a nuclear-armed Iran, become more or less likely?

These clear measures are the ultimate tests of American leadership. And, by these standards, we haven’t seen much in the President’s first term that inspires confidence in a second."

    Indeed...

"Romney had especially harsh words for Obama’s planned military cuts:

"Today, we are just months away from an arbitrary, across-the-board budget reduction that would saddle the military with a trillion dollars in cuts, severely shrink our force structure, and impair our ability to meet and deter threats. Don’t bother trying to find a serious military rationale behind any of this, unless that rationale is wishful thinking. Strategy is not driving President Obama’s massive defense cuts. In fact, his own Secretary of Defense warned that these reductions would be “devastating.”

"Contrast Romney’s quite specific speech with Obama’s yesterday, in which he obfuscated the issues, ignored the flaws in his foreign policy, and unilaterally declared that the Middle East was headed in the right direction – without any evidence. And Obama ignored his own record of attempted defense cuts, instead blaming Republicans and attacking Mitt Romney’s patriotism."

How true. And such a clear example of business and government working hand hand to their own benfit. It's a good engine. It's what passes (laughingly to some) as Capitalism in America. But that's not really what it's about anymore.

^Yes, and by all means lets open the "Mitt dodged the draft" can of worms, too:
Romney dodged the draft - Salon.com
But while telling the truth about his lack of “desire to go off and serve” in 1994, Romney lied again, telling the Boston Herald he didn’t “take any actions to remove myself from the pool of young men who were eligible for the draft.” That’s absolutely not true. He got his first deferment while at Stanford University, where in his prep-school prankster phase he counter-protested a Vietnam draft protest. That’s another lie, in a way: While posing as pro-draft and pro-war, he was evading the draft with an “activity in study” deferment. After his freshman year, he got deferment status as “a minister of religion or divinity student,” which he’d keep while working in France as a missionary for his Mormon church.

Yet the AP reveals that other young Mormons were denied that deferment. And since the church itself strongly supported the war, its leaders eventually limited such deferments, but Romney kept his.

After his religious deferment, he got another academic deferment to finish school. By the time he was draft eligible, troop numbers were declining, and his lottery number was never called.

Why would they potentially waste a bright, promising young man from a rich family in a futile foreign war anyway? They don't call 'em grunts for nothing- at least the modern USA is honest about this, albeit pretty hypocritical when you get a hi-so draft dodger like dubya standing on an aircraft carrier in a flyboy suit (homoeroticism) telling us about a mission accomplished he knows nothing whatsoever about, except how to make oil money from it (and even that failed). No Bush's, Cheneys' Obamas, Clintons, Rumsfelds etc; no Senator's sons gonna be VFW fodder these days. It makes the UK look quite shallow in comparison, sending the Queen's grandson to Afghanistan. For what?- he should have been trading oil futures.

Republicans don't have much choice at the moment but to change the subject. Rmoney is trying desperately to do so, as well as intensify the rhetoric. His recent comments about a supposed Obama admin leak are a good example of both. WaPo: "Romney slams leak of bin Laden raid info as ‘contemptible’ and ‘betrayal of national interest’"

I really can't wait for the debates. I heard an old school chum of Romney's, a Republican businessman, say Obama would wipe the floor with Mitt. Put that nice head of hair of Mittens to good use.

Dim Mitt, his help and suckin up to the extreme right.

John I couldn’t get confirmed Bolton has now sided with that looney bat shit crazy Michelle Bachmann’s anti Muslim witch hunt.: Top Romney adviser Bolton calls Bachmann’s anti-Muslim witch hunt ‘legitimate’

And some wonder why anyone would take Dim Mitt serious when he chooses scum like Bolton to work with him,………..as his foreign policy advisor no less. John I don’t have a clue Bolton should stick to comic relief on FOX. Those mentally challenged viewers at FOX can relate to him.

And this just in, Hispanics still despise Dim Mitt and the Republicans: http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/MSNBC/Se...oversample.pdf

    Support from Latinos
    Obama 67%
    Dim Mitt 23%

As I understand a presidential candidate needs at least 40% of the Hispanic vote to get elected.

    Obama wins again

    Mitt is definitely the 1%.
    A member of the elite
A fact the democrats should be pointing out more.
To suggest he knows whats really going on outside his cloistered world is just plain stupid.
I wonder how long it's been since he was in a supermarket for anything other than political points?

Do they allow teleprompters in the debates? Barry seems kinda lost without one.

Mitt's got a lot of experience standing up on his own two feet.

Barry would be still be dragging his knuckles in the jungle of community organizers without a teleprompter and affirmative action.

The Republican War on Teleprompters isn't going well.

Mitt uses one. He even read 'end of quote' off the telepromopter the other day.

I don't think the debates will go well for Romney, he seems to get flustered easily. Even Perry managed to rile him up in a primary debate. Unless they are organised by FOX of course...

"I'm Sean Hannity, your moderator for this evening. I'm joined by panelists Rush Limbaugh, James O'Keefe, Pamela Gellar and the corpse of Ronald Reagan enhanced with animatronics and programmed to say what we fantasize Reagan would say. Governor Romney will have twenty minutes for an opening statement and then we'll allow 0Bummer to babble for 30 seconds before our Tea Party audience shouts abuse at him."
